Kamiakin Wins an OT Defensive Thriller, Captures 2016 3A Washington Crown
By Steve Dion

In a year filled with milestones for longtime O’Dea coach Monte Kohler, one game separated his Fighting Irish from a state title and an undefeated season. To achieve that accomplishment, O’Dea would have to defeat a gritty Kamiakin Braves squad, fresh off a breathtaking win vs. the back to back 3A champion Eastside Catholic Crusaders.

Starting its third string quarterback Emonte Scott in place of Warren King and Ben Beale, the Irish were forced to rely on their power running game of Hunter Franco and Jamyn Patu. Conversely, Kamiakin utilized the improvisational skills of quarterback Zach Borisch.

The first half was marred by stalled drives, turnovers and relentless defense from both schools. A 0-0 halftime score was not the expectation for either team heading into the break.

O’Dea began the second half as they have in several big games this season with pitches to Patu in the “I” formation for long sweep carries. He found a gap for a big gain early in the third, and eventually closed the drive with a 20-yard scamper for the first points of the game. The game remained a stalemate for the next 18 minutes.

Late in the fourth quarter, with the score 7-0 O’Dea, the Braves needed to make an offensive push. From their own 47-yard line, Borisch connected with Darreon Moore on a short pass to score a 53-yard touchdown and tie the game with 4:24 remaining.

The Irish managed the clock through their power running game and put themselves in a position to kick a game winning field-goal with 3 seconds remaining in regulation. The kick sailed just right of the goalposts, sending the game to overtime.

Kamiakin had the first possession from the Irish 25, and Borisch dashed to the pylon for the go-ahead score before anyone in the Tacoma Dome could blink an eye. O’Dea was then forced to score a touchdown, but the stellar Kamiakin defense held strong and closed the door with a fourth down stand, becoming the 3A Washington 2016 football state champions.

Third Time’s the Charm for Napavine in Title Quest
By Steve Dion

For the third straight year, the Napavine Tigers found themselves in the 2B Washington state championship game. Liberty (Spangle) wanted to play spoiler and end the Tigers quest for the illusive crown.

The Liberty (Spangle) Lancers scored the first points with a short field goal, but Napavine answered with 14 unanswered and took a 14-10 lead into halftime.

The Tigers kept the gas pedal on the floor and continued to pull away in the second half, scoring 13 more unanswered points in the 3rd quarter to take a 27-10 lead. The Lancers battled strong, but were unable to keep pace with the high octane Napavine offense. Lancers quarterback Garrett Rogers hooked up with Josh Larsen-Nowland late in the third to make it just an 11-point game going into the fourth.

Quarterback Wyatt Stanley kept the clock moving for Napavine by capturing big runs and keeping the Lancer offense off the field in the fourth quarter. On the 40th anniversary of their 1976 title, Napavine answered the call and brought the state title back to town by winning the 2A Washington state crown.

Senior sharpshooter Jaylen Nowell had no-rust to shake off as the versatile guard was extremely efficient from the field scoring a game high 23 points. Curtis Walker also had a nice night logging 22 tough points, most of which down in the scrum.

Spanaway Lake battled despite trailing by a wide margin as Divante Moffitt and Derek Gordon Jr. notched 14 apiece in the ballgame.

Daejon Davis excited the crowd with a few highlight dunks and J’Raan Brooks even entered the mix with a two-handed slam of his own late.

Kamiakin Spoils Crusader Three-peat Bid, Title Game Bound
By Steve Dion

The two teams representing the 3A state championship game were to be determined at Pop Keeney Stadium in a double dip, the first of which between reigning back-to-back champs and their challenger Kamiakin Braves.

In typical Crusader fashion, they were up a touchdown before anyone could blink when Chris Lefau scampered 62 yards to the house putting the Braves in a hole early in the ballgame. Kamiakin was able to move the ball down the field following the EC touchdown, but came away emptyhanded when it stalled and resulted in a missed field goal.

The Cru were able to grab their first double digit lead of the game when Scott Lees knocked through a 27 yard field goal before the first quarter expired.
Kamiakin needed a big momentum swing and they got it with a heavy dose of old school ground and pound football. The one-two punch of Zach Borisch and Jethro Questad moved the ball at will and scored 17 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a halftime lead. This included a pair Borisch quarterback keepers from 6 and 15 yards out respectively and a Garrett Paxton field goal.

Just like the game started, the Crusaders started the second half with a bang by recovering an onside kick. This led to a game tying score minutes later. Eastside continued to roll with 10 more unanswered point to take their second double digit lead.

Could the Braves fight back again?

Another string of chunk runs on the ensuing drive set up a tremendous touchdown reception by Benson Smith who hauled in a tipped ball showing complete concentration. The Kamiakin defense started to heat up and gave their potent offense another crack at the Cru. Isaiah Brimmer gave KHS the lead again on a picture-perfect fade route. The missed point after made the score interesting with the Braves only up by three.

In Eastside’s final drive in the closing minutes, they were able to move the sticks, but the Braves prevented a big play by one of their many capable stars and closed the deal with a Brimmer pick with just over a minute remaining. A new 3A champion will be crowned this year.

Does Kamiakin have 48 more minutes of magic this season?

Murphy Avenges 2015 Tumwater Knockout in Otton’s Final Game
By Steve Dion

The juggernaut of 2A this season Archbishop Murphy traveled south to take on Sid Otton and Tumwater for a state semi berth and a chance to avenge last year’s finish when the Wildcats were eliminated by this same Tumwater team.

Archbishop jumped out to a quick double digit lead as Ryan Henderson buried a 39 yard field goal on the opening drive. Later in the quarter Collin Montez scored the first of many Wildcat touchdowns, this time from one yard out.

The Tbirds gathered their composure and established a run game with Noah Andrews and Jakob Holbrook to set up a circus catch in the endzone by Andrew May. Tumwater then tied the game when Nathan Seaman buried a field goal.

As the half was winding down, the Tbirds had a chance to take the lead, but the Cats defense held firm and gave their offense a chance to take a lead to the locker room.

Anfernee Gurley hauled in a late touchdown grab before the second quarter elapsed and the scoreboard read 17-10 in favor of ATM with one half to go.

Tumwater’s defense emerged from the locker room with renewed energy and were able to force two early turnovers. However, these opportunities did not result in any points.

The turning point occurred when Collin Montez picked off a pass deep in his team’s territory and ran the ball back 96 yards for the score.

Emmanuel Osuoha joined the party with a few late touchdowns to add to the Wildcats lead. Abraham Lucas played a crucial role in the second half shutout of the Tumwater attack.

With the win, Archbishop continues their run of dominance and places themselves one step closer to a state title. For Tumwater, their season ends, but more importantly, Sid Otton closes out his legendary coaching career.

The emotions on the field after the game covered the gamut and reminded us why we love high school football.

O’Dea Bookends Abes Season to State Semi Berth
By Steve Dion

In a rematch of week one between the O’Dea Fighting Irish & Lincoln Abes which O’Dea prevailed 31-14, the winner of Friday night’s game at Memorial Stadium would punch their ticket to the state semis.

Lincoln worked the opening possession down the field effortlessly until they reached the one yard line where they were stopped and held scoreless. The Irish countered with a touchdown drive capped off with a 36 yard Hunter Franco run.

The momentum swung in Lincoln’s favor midway through the first half when a fourth down stop led to a Ben Malietufa run to the endzone to tie the game. LHS even had a chance to take the lead when they regained possession. However, a forced fumble gave O’Dea the ball back and before the half concluded, Ben Beale found a wide open Sam Sanchez to give the Irish a 14-7 lead heading into the break.

When play resumed, Jamyn Patu earned a heavy dose of O’Dea touches and found an opening from 19 yards out early in the third to put his team up 21-7.

The Abes returned the favor by marching down the field and punching it in from two yards out by LJ Lovelace.

Patu struck back with another touchdown to retain the two-possession lead, could Lincoln keep pace?

Joey Sinclair took to the air and found a heavily covered Kavon Holden who hauled in a tremendous grab to bring the score back within one possession.

With the clock winding down, the Abes found themselves with an opportunity to tie up the game, but a big stop by O’Dea tough defense was enough to finish the Abes comeback threat.

The Fighting Irish return to semifinal weekend under Monte Kohler illustrious tutelage still in heavy contention for another state title.

O’Dea Roars Past Ferndale in Dominant Second Half
By Steve Dion

With only sixteen teams remaining in the quest for a state championship, one of the standout contenders in O’Dea welcomed in the Golden Eagles from Ferndale. The Fighting Irish were looking to keep their undefeated record intact, but would need to knock off a tough Northwest squad to move on.

Ferndale jumped out to quick lead through some sleight of hand in the backfield. Ben Broselle ripped off a 60 yard run early in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles defense fed off that momentum and contained O’Dea’s playmakers in the early going.

FHS grabbed possession back and were facing a 4th and long from the O’Dea 40. Showing no fear, they went for it and Broselle dashed right up the gut to the endzone 14-0.

Ferndale had a chance to put themselves up 3 scores and potentially put themselves in a great position to put the Irish in big trouble, but fumbled and O’Dea recovered.

O’Dea took advantage and finally broke through on a drive which Warren King imposed his will with quarterback sneak into the teeth of the Ferndale defense to move the sticks. The offense capped it off with a jump pass to Sam Sanchez who was wide open in the endzone.

With 8 seconds remaining and Ferndale punting the ball, Shea Carstens returned the kick 77 yards for a touchdown. Unfortunately, a personal foul negated the score and Ferndale maintained their 14-7 lead heading into halftime.

O’Dea responded in a big way.

Early in the 3rd frame Jamyn Patu finally found some daylight from the backfield and took the rock 70 yards up the sideline to tie the game up.
Moments later, Kyle Hollabaugh returned a fumble for touchdown to give the Irish the lead. Coincidentally, the rain started to fall as Hollabaugh crossed the goal line.

Soon to follow: another Patu touchdown run. Then a pitch and catch by King to Quinton Lewis. The ensuing kickoff was fumbled and returned by Parker Dana for a score to put a stamp on the contest.

When the dust settled, O’Dea walked away winners 42-21. They will face the Lincoln Abes in the quarterfinal round.

Gig Harbor Fends Off Interlake in Playoff Downpour
By Steve Dion

A late Saturday afternoon with unrelenting rain at Interlake High School was the scene for an opening round playoff matchup between the host Saints and visiting Gig Harbor Tides.

Interlake was ready to defend their home field at the onset as their first play from scrimmage was a flea flicker to put them within striking distance. Moments later, Duncan Varela found Micheal Veliyev behind the Tide secondary for the opening score of the game from 31 yards out.

A minute later, Veliyev picked off Nick Yockey’s pass and the Saints were in business.

In the closing seconds of the first quarter, Varelia connected with Charlie Galanti to put Interlake up by 13. The Tides were reeling.

Needing a successful drive, the Gig Harbor put together a series of plays which eventually placed them in striking distance for their first points of the game; a fake handoff by Ben Hollenbeck which allowed the Tide quarterback to trot into the endzone untouched.

Feeding off the momentum swing, Gig Harbor came up with a fumble by the Saints and before the half concluded grabbed a one-point lead when Martin Brazier punched it in from 2 yards out.

When play resumed, so did the rain and a flurry of turnovers created a game which saw few legitimate scoring opportunities. The score remained 14-13 and the clock was winding down.

In the final two minutes of the contest, Interlake had the ball on the Gig Harbor side of the field and were driving. Varela was able to move the sticks a number of times to retain fresh sets of downs. The Interlake quarterback tucked the ball and was endzone bound, but the ball came loose and the Tide defense jumped on it within their own 5 yard line.

Utilizing timeouts effectively, Interlake was able to stop the Tides from running the clock dry and had one last gasp effort. However, Cole Workman hauled in a late interception to put the game on ice. Gig Harbor moves on in the 3A state playoffs, Interlake concludes their season.

The Final Score:

Lakes Advances in Road Win Over Warriors
By Steve Dion

The opening round of the playoffs featured an intriguing Pierce County vs. WesCo matchup between the Lakes Lancers and host Edmonds-Woodway Warriors.

Edmonds-Woodway caught Lakes flat early in the opening minutes. Cappassio Cherry was able to punch the rock in at the goal line after a handful of big carries in their first drive.

The Warriors defense matched the intensity by stuffing the Lancer attack. Ali Gaye was a force coming off the edge to pressure Lakes quarterback Cody Roe.

Lakes utilized a dual quarterback system as Jaylen Antoine made his debut after a long absence from injury. Cody Roe got the start who is more of a running quarterback.

Wind was a factor as northerly gusts affected punts and long passes.

Early in the second quarter Lakes capitalized on the punt affected by the elements as Daeon Hudson pounded it in from 3 yards out. Like the old football saying “low man wins”, Hudson got low on Ransom Gardner which is tough task because Gardner is listed at 5’0 165 pounds.

As the half wore on Edmonds-Woodway faced a crucial 4th and 2. They called timeout to talk it over. This proved to be a good decision because Cherry took a pitch from the backfield as if he was shot from a cannon and bolted to the endzone untouched from 49 yards out.

Enter Jaylen Antoine.

With 1:03 left. Lakes faced a 3rd and long from their own 25. Antoine aired it out and found Dedrian Milligan on the other end. On the next play, another long ball. At the 0:29 second mark, Aaron Richardson found himself standing in the Warriors endzone with the football and a tied ballgame. Coach Miller later admitted this was a crucial series of heading into the locker room and second half.

The third quarter was a pick party as Anthony Lindamood intercepted a Lindsey pass in the opening minutes, but was immediately nullified when Dedrian Milligan returned the favor. Not to be outdone, Lindamood came up with a second pick shortly thereafter.

Lakes came up with a big 4th down stop early in the final quarter when the Warriors were threatening. However, the next play was another interception, this time by Noah Becker.

Unfazed, the Lancers defense stepped up yet again and this time were rewarded. With 5 minutes remaining and Roe back in the game, a shotgun snap and a clunky run-option execution in which Roe ran into his running back Melvin Miller, he tucked it and ran down the sidelines. He followed key blocks and barreled into the endzone for a 46 yard score to take the lead.

This ignited an already amped Lancer defense. Edmonds-Woodway’s offense was stuffed in their desperation drive and Lakes regained position to lined up in victory formation to find themselves victors.

The Final Score:
Lakes 21, Edmonds-Woodway 14.

Lake Stevens Routs Bearcats for Fourth Consecutive League Title
By Steve Dion

The build up for what some dubbed “The Game of the Decade” in WesCo country was tremendous. The parking extended several blocks with standing room only. Virtually the entire town of Monroe showed up. Which undefeated heavyweight would prevail; the up-and-coming Bearcats or three-time defending champ Vikings?

Monroe was excited for this game, but maybe they were too pumped up in the early going. Lake Stevens’ cooler heads prevailed throughout the entirety of the ballgame.

On their first drive, the offense converted a crucial third and long which set up a 45 yard Blake May touchdown less than two minutes into the game.

Monroe was unable to generate a response and Lake Stevens took full advantage by getting the ball into the hands of one of their premier playmakers Hunter Eckstrom whose availability was uncertain heading into the game. He took a pitch out of the backfield 63 yards to the house for a two score lead early.

Monroe began to shoot themselves in the foot because moments later they coughed it up and handed it right back over to the Viks.

Early in the second quarter quarterback Conor Bardue who has done a fantastic job taking over after Jacob Eason graduated found Josh Rasmussen from 33 yards out. The rout was on.

The Bardue/Rasmussen battery notched 4 touchdowns in the game one of which occurred immediately after an act of pure highway robbery by Anthony Hutchinson who ripped the ball from a Monroe ball carrier.

At halftime the scoreboard read 35-0 in favor of Lake Stevens. The total yardage was 298 to 74 in favor of the Vikings: a complete display of domination. Monroe’s JJ Jerome never got in a rhythm and the vaunted lines of scrimmage were humbled by the hungrier Vikings.

The running clock did take effect in the third when Rasmussen’s fourth and final touchdown put his team up and over the requisite 40 points.

Monroe was able to grind out a field goal, but those were the only Bearcat points in the game. They will have to shake this one off if they want to advance in the postseason.

Lake Stevens claims the WesCo 4A crown again and the #1 seed out of District 1 all the while looking like an increasingly dangerous team heading into the playoffs.

Timberline Keeps Peninsula Out of Endzone for Title Crown
By Steve Dion

The seventh and final week of league play to close the regular season proved necessary to determine the South Sound Conference winner as the Timberline Blazers played host to the Peninsula Seahawks at South Sound Stadium on Thursday night.

The battle at the line of scrimmage dictated the outcome of this contest as both offensive units struggled to find their groove for the majority of the game.

A Timberline drive late in the second quarter deep in Seahawk territory resulted in a 25 yard strike from Jacob Henning to Tariq Romain on fourth down.

Peninsula returned from the locker room ready to put a strong second half together as the opening kickoff was returned into the Blazers side of the field. Unfortunately the drive stalled and they settled for a Danny Jackson field goal from 35 yards out.

The Hawks defense stepped up yet again when Michael Campigotto picked off a deep Timberline pass and ran back a nice return. The Blazers did not allow that to bite them.

As the end of regulation was closing in, Peninsula had one final drive to punch it in. Brandon Potter took a pitch from the backfield inside the THS five yard line with less than a minute remaining.

The Blazer defense held their ground after that lapse and stuffed Peninsula the next three plays.

On fourth down, it was all or nothing. Quarterback Ryder Johnson drops back, scans his check downs, finds his target. Incomplete!

Abes Clinch League Title Against Panthers in Rematch
By Steve Dion

With one game remaining in the regular season, league titles are being locked up and the playoff seeding is in full effect. Friday night’s Pierce County League contest between the Lincoln Abes and Bonney Lake Panthers carried heavy conference championship implications. Bonney Lake beat Lincoln last season to win the conference, could Lincoln return the favor?

The Abes quickly moved the ball into scoring territory on the opening drive, but numerous penalties halted their progress and forced them to hand the ball to the Panthers. Bonney Lake tried to establish their run game through feeding tailback Jason Day time after time. Lincoln’s defense held their ground and prevented big gains.

As the half wore on, the Abes continued to shoot themselves in the foot with costly penalties and untimely turnovers to prevent them from picking up points. Tristian Kwon lit a spark for Lincoln with big gains that let the Panthers know they would need to pack some punch sooner than later. BL’s inability to sustain drives was their Achilles heel in the first half. The halftime scoreboard read 0-0.

When play resumed, Bonney Lake finally put together a scoring drive which included a pass from Kaeden Hammond to Day out of the backfield and a pass interference penalty. Tate Hamlett buried a 28 yard field goal for the first points of the game. Could Lincoln counter?

A failed drive turned the ball back to the Panthers, but Lincoln struck in a big way when Teshawn Seu took an interception 90 yards to the house for the lead.
Shortly thereafter, the Abes piled on with a 60 yard run by quarterback Joey Sinclair.

The Panthers simply could not recoil from the momentum swing and the damage was done for both sides. With the win and a loss by Stadium, the Lincoln Abes are winners of the 2016 Pierce County League title.

Woodinville Survives Triple OT Battle with Skyline to Claim KingCo Crown
By Steve Dion

A soggy Thursday night at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell featured the #5 Skyline Spartans (6-1 overall, 6-0 league) taking on the #6 Woodinville Falcons (7-0 overall, 6-0 league). This game would crown the KingCo 4A title even with one game remaining in the regular season. A championship buzz was in the air.

The Spartans grabbed control of the game in the first half when Isaiah Shim turned a handful of pitches from the backfield into big gains. They paid off with an 8 yard pass to Alex Diegel from Drew Kistner. The Falcons didn’t respond so Skyline added on with a razzle dazzle double pass for 53 yards from receiver Bradley Kim to CJ Moore. Woodinville was on the ropes early.

In an attempt to salvage the half with some momentum, the Falcons struck gold when Michael Roth bolted down the sideline and hauled in a perfectly placed deep ball by Jaden Sheffey. The scoreboard read 13-7 at the break.

Woodinville picked up where they left off when an early drive in the third quarter found them on the doorstep of a potentially leading score. However, a fumble near the goal line rolled into the endzone and was recovered by the Spartans.

Shim’s hard work in the first half paid off when the senior weaved his way for a 4th quarter score to put his team up by 14. Could the Falcons rally?

Mack Minnehan took the call and mere minutes later plowed his way to pay dirt to bring the contest back to one score. The Woodinville sideline erupted.

After a gutsy defensive stop, the Falcons had a chance to tie the game. Nash Fouch stepped in with a tremendous grab in the corner of the endzone to bring the ballgame to 21 apiece. Skyline opted to run clock and attempt to win in overtime.

Woodinville had the first crack in overtime and chose to keep feeding Minnehan the ball. After some big chunks of yards, he pushed the ball past the plane to put the pressure on the Spartans.

With a hungry Woodinville defense that could taste victory, Skyline needed a clutch play to keep their hopes alive. On 4th and 10 from the 11 yard line, Kister found Kim over the middle for exactly 10 yards to earn a fresh set of downs from one yard out. They punched it in.

Skyline opened second overtime with a handful of quick passes to move the chains and set up shim for a goal line plunge.

On Woodinville’s first play of double OT, Minnehan ran into a wall of tacklers but somehow emerged from the pile and took the ball to the house to bring the game to a THIRD OVERTIME!

Woodinville had the first crack in which Fouch showed off his great ball skills hauling in a 50/50 ball in the corner to put his team back on top.

Facing a fourth and goal from the four yard line, could Skyline continue this tight-rope act? The Falcons defense broke up a would-be touchdown pass to seal the win and a league title prompting the Woodinville crowd to pour onto Pop Keeney Stadium field.

O’Dea Dethrones Crusaders in Downtown Thriller
By Steve Dion

Friday night under the Space Needle at Memorial Stadium featured a heavyweight bout between #1 Eastside Catholic & #2 O’Dea. Both teams entered the contest undefeated with bragging rights as top dog in the state on the line and a fast-track to a league title.

It is never good to start with a three and out and that’s unfortunately what O’Dea did. The Crusaders made them pay when Ze’shaun Lewis connected with Marcus Stoebner for a 53-yard score less than 3 minutes into the contest.

O’Dea regrouped with a drive highlighted by some nice Jamyn Patu runs. Patu eventually punched it in from 10 yards out to tie it up.

If there was any doubt about Hunter Bryant’s recovery process from knee injury in the Skyview game, it was put to rest when he took a screen pass 72 yards to the house to put EC back on top.

The half ended with a bit of controversy when the Cru were on the doorstep of breaking the game open. With 5 seconds remaining in the second quarter, they opted for a corner fade to Bryant which was broken up by Dominique Gates. The scoreboard read triple zeros, but the officials claimed there was one second remaining. Eastside Catholic was able to boot in a field goal for a 17-7 lead at the break with a fire-breathing Monte Kohler making his way to the locker room.

The Crusaders received the ball to start the second half and within the first minute, an errant snap rolled into the endzone and resulted in a safety making it an 8 point game.

O’Dea built some momentum off this play and kept the Cru attack at bay throughout the 3rd quarter.

The Irish had a chance to tie it up pending a two point conversion early in the 4th, but were stuffed by a gutsy goal line stand from the Eastside defense and settled for 3 cutting the deficit to 5 points. The Cru regained possession and were on the move to seal it. As they moved into Irish territory, Dominique Gates hauled in a massive interception for O’Dea.

This time, they took full advantage of the opportunity and from six yards out O’Dea quarterback Warren King rolled out and bolted to the corner pylon to take the lead. There was some déjà vu on the two-point conversion as King dashed to the goal line giving his team a 3-point lead.

Eastside had their shot. They moved the ball down the field in a hurry and were facing a 4th down deep in O’Dea territory. A Lewis pass was broken up, but defensive pass interference gave them a fresh set of downs.

The Cru moved it to the 3 yard line and called a timeout with less than 20 seconds remaining. On third down, Lewis drops back, sees a receiver streaking across the goal line, he lets it fly. Interception. Shea Carstens. Ballgame. O’Dea hands Eastside Catholic their first in-state loss since the 2013 season. Stay tuned the remainder of the season, there may be a sequel!

The Final Score:
O’Dea 20, Eastside Catholic 17.

Sumner Stages Second Half Comeback to Knock Off Oly
By Steve Dion

Sumner Head Coach Keith Ross is well aware of the target his team has become and how each opponent the Spartans face are going to bring their best to try to knock off the top dog in the SPSL. Olympia was the next in line on Friday to challenge the league leader led by a strong running game featuring Scott Gunther.

Olympia’s game-plan was well executed in the first half, gumming up the point of attack led by Amir Matheney and preventing the potent Sumner playmakers from reaching the second level. The Bears generating their offense on the tough running of Gunther who moved the chains on critical third and fourth down conversions. This led to a pair of field goal by Skyler Davis who created a 6-0 halftime lead for Oly.

The Bears had kept the ball out of Connor Wedington’s hands for most of the first half, but the opening kickoff of the second half was when the trend was bucked. The UW commit brought the kick into Bear territory and moments later, he was in the endzone after a 37 yard scamper to the corner pylon for six.

The lead would shift back to the visitors when Davis buried his third field goal, but the trip to Sumner’s redzone was a golden opportunity to capitalize with a touchdown. The Spartans make them pay when they marched down the ball down the field and put the ball in Tre Weed’s hands who took a screen pass 31 yards to the house.

Sparty added on shortly thereafter with another Wedington score and was able to hang on despite a late touchdown for the Bears. Sumner moves to 6-0, Olympia picks up their first loss moving them to 5-1.

Skyline Tames Bothell Attack in Pivotal League Matchup
By Steve Dion

Skyline is beginning to really hit their stride as the regular season is rapidly winding down. Mat Taylor’s Spartans started their league clash with the tough Bothell Cougars at Pop Keeney with a pair of touchdowns which made it appear BHS may be in for a long night.

However, Coach Bainter rallied the troops and punched the ball into the endzone twice to bring the game back to even ground; a pair of touchdown passes by Jacob Sirmon to Daniel Johnson and DaVicious Wilson respectively. Before the break, the Spartans marched down the field on a drive which created a momentum swing that carried into the second half. Drew Kistner completed numerous quick passes to the sidelines to protect the clock and move the chains. With 28 seconds left in the second quarter, Kistner connected with Luke Stiles from 21 yards out to give Sparty a touchdown lead heading into the locker room.

When the game resumed, Skyline took the opening drive down the field and were on the doorstep of taking a two-score lead. Tanner Gunnells picked off a pass that was headed for the endzone handing the ball back over to Bothell. However, the Spartans defense stepped up and didn’t not allow the Cougs to capitalize eventually giving it back to their offense.

The game was put away when Isaiah Shim picked up some big chunk runs to set up a rushing touchdown for Kistner. The scoring concluded with a 53-yard bomb to Bradley Kim. The scramble at the top of KingCo 4A continues with Skyline taking over the reins.

The Final Score:

Sumner Lights Up Saturday Night Scoreboard, Improves to 5-0
By Steve Dion

If there is any doubt about the firepower of Sumner this season, their dramatic win in week four against Graham-Kapowsin made a statement about their place at the top of 4A. Following a 77 point effort over South Kitsap and a passing touchdown record by Nathaniel Holcomb, Puyallup was hungry to hand Sparty their first defeat of the season.

Sumner bolted down the field on the first drive of the contest which capped off with an 11 yard corner route in the back of the endzone which receiver Tre Weed climb the ladder for. The junior wideout finished with 4 scores.

The Spartans scored three more touchdowns before Puyallup found the scoreboard, on of which a 70 yard fumble recovery for touchdown by Alexander Zaragoza.

Before the first half concluded, Puyallup tailback Honore Thomas punched in a pair of goal line touchdowns. At 41-14 could the Vikings rally?

The contest reached its breaking point early in the third when Connor Wedington busted loose for a 70 yard scamper, unfortunately a penalty negated the score. However, Coach Ross dialed up another run play for the University of Washington recruit on the next snap which he took 63 yards.

The scoring for both teams bounced back and forth until the conclusion of the contest, but Sumner had built a massive lead which was never jeopardized. A decisive victory for the 5-0 Spartans was the finished product with a tough Olympia Bears team next on the schedule. Puyallup falls to 3-2 with Graham-Kapowsin up next on the schedule.

The Final Score:

Thursday night featured a clash of Eagles as Arlington ventured down to Art Crate Field to take on Graham-Kapowsin. This game could not start fast enough for both team coming off losses: a dramatic shootout with Sumner for GK and a lopsided affair against Ferndale for Arlington.

Kapowsin wasted no time exerting their dominance. The opening drive resulted in a 23 yard touchdown run by Zack Navarrette-Smith. The floodgates were just beginning to open.

Before the first quarter concluded, Aaron Olmos recorded a pair of scores and Jeremiah Kekoa returned an interception 61 yards to the house.

The running clock was implemented before the first half concluded.

Arlington showed tremendous toughness despite the lopsided score and were able to keep GK from scoring in the second half.

A few solid carries from Tallen Williams out of the backfield helped move the chains within striking distance. Arlington finished the drive with a 7-yard strike from Anthony Whitis to Griffin Gardoski.

The second half concluded rapidly and the home team walked away with a convincing win.

Woodinville Claims Defensive Battle Against Rival Bothell
By Steve Dion

One of the great 4A rivalries in Washington features a pair of KingCo foes Woodinville and Bothell which made its annual renewal Friday night at Pop Keeney. This has been a one sided battle in recent years in favor of #5 Bothell (3-0), but Woodinville (3-0) has a strong 2016 squad and was hungry to take back the torch.

The visiting Falcons set the tone in this game by playing sound defense and moving the chains on offense to strike when opportunity arose. They were first on the board with a field goal by Micah Roth. James Johnston returned the favor for Bothell to tie the game at three apiece early in the second. The Falcons responded with a drive culminating in a 4-yard goal line dive by Mack Minnehan to regain the lead. The Cougs used the remaining moments in the first half to march down the field and punch it in the endzone; an 18-yard strike from Jacob Sirmon to Anthony Indelicato.

The third quarter was marred by drives cut short by turnovers and penalties which kept the score deadlocked at 10 heading into the final frame.

Woodinville strung together a series of runs by Minnehan that put them in the redzone. Jaden Sheffey took a shot at the endzone for a touchdown, but the pass was broken up. The resilient Sheffey tried again and found Jared Eisenbarth for the go-ahead score. Could the defense hang on?

Bothell’s attempt to even the score was denied for the final time by the Falcon’s defense who could taste victory after the Eisenbarth score. Woodinville pushes their record to 4-0 and first place in the league standings.

The Final Score:
Woodinville 17, Bothell 10.

Sumner Survives SPSL Shootout with Graham-Kapowsin
By Steve Dion

It is rare that a league title can be won in September, but Thursday night’s SPSL showdown between #1 Sumner and #4 Graham-Kapowsin has the potential to determine just that. These two teams have separated themselves as the class of the conference which opens up the possibility that the winner could run the table to a conference championship.

GK opened strong with a scoring drive that culminated with a goal line plunge by Brandon Becker. The opening play from scrimmage by the Spartans on the ensuing drive went awry as a flea flicker by Connor Wedington resulted in the star running back absorbing a big tackle. The hit sent him to the sideline for a bit to catch his breath.

Shortly thereafter, Micah Smith gave the Eagles a 13-0 lead with a 70 yard scamper up the gut aided by the tremendous blocking of Foster Sarell and Matt Shook.

Sumner struck back in a big way when Tyson Rainwater recorded a pick-six from 43 yards out to prevent the Spartans from falling three scores behind. Before the first half concluded, Luke Ross took advantage of broken coverage and found a wide open Tre Weed to give the home team a one point lead heading in the break.

As the second half wore on, this battle was still up for grabs. A Sumner drive early in the fourth pushed the Eagles defense to bend, but not break. They held the Spartans to a field goal and a four point lead. GK proceeded to move the ball methodically down the field on a heavy dose of Micah Smith carries with the clock continuing to tick. Becker capped off the drive with another goal line push to send the Graham-Kapowsin sideline into exhilaration.

Sumner wasn’t done.

On the ensuing kickoff, Wedington took the kick 90 yards to the house in which he bounced off GK tacklers like a pinball. The return handed the lead back over to the #1 ranked team and they didn’t look back. Tre Weed picked off a desperation pass to put the game on ice. The Spartans hang on for a thrilling win between heavyweights.

Welcome to 4A, Sumner!

The Final Score:

Skyline Opens New Stadium With Victory Over Wolves
By Steve Dion
After spending two weeks in Eastern Washington, Skyline was chomping at the bit to play at their new facility. The 2015 runner-up Spartans hosted the 2-0 Eastlake Wolves in their season home opener for a pivotal 4A KingCo clash.

Sparty took the opening drive the distance ending with a 2-yard punch-in by Isaiah Shim. Unfazed, Eastlake responded by marching down the field and quarterback Ben Howard connected with a diving Parker Lester in the back corner of the endzone.

Skyline’s attacked found its groove by feeding their tailbacks the football behind their bruising left guard Henry Bainivalu. Riley Gill broke the deadlock on an 18 yard scamper up the gut to put the Spartans back up by a score heading into halftime.

Eastlake emerged from the locker room with a will to even the score and did so when Howard found Hank Pladson for 62 yards and the game tying touchdown. A successful two-point conversion brought the score to 14 apiece.

The Spartans bounced back when Kevin McGrane knocked in a field goal from 35 yards out. At 17-14, could the Wolves bounce back again?
A clean sheet by Sparty’s defense allowed the McGrane kick to be the game-winner as Eastlake’s attempt to win was thwarted. Both teams will enter week four with identical 2-1 records.

Eastside Catholic Fends Off Skyview in Memorial Classic Finish
By Steve Dion

The 3rd Annual Memorial Classic concluded with a dandy of a matchup between two of the top teams in the state: defending back-to-back 3A champs Eastside Catholic and 4A up-and-comer Skyview from Vancouver. Could the Storm end the in-state win streak held by the Crusaders which dates back to 2014?

Eastside opened the scoring on a roll-out by Ze’Shaun Lewis who found his favorite target Hunter Bryant dashing toward the endzone. Bryant was forced to sit the majority of the contest after getting banged-up on a kickoff shortly thereafter. Hayden Froeber responsed with a four yard punch-in to tie the game back up.

The second frame was big for the Crusaders who tacked on ten more points courtesy of a Chris Lefau touchdown and Ben Petersen field goal. Could the Storm rally in the second half?

Skyview answered the call in similar fashion when Tavis Chunphakvenn-Pinkney broke multiple tackles to find pay dirt and swing the momentum back in the Storm’s favor. The fate of the game was in the balance heading into the final frame with EC up by a single point at 17-16.

Thielbahr’s Cru responded with one of their pillars of success over the past few seasons which is ‘Finish’. Tyler Folkes put Eastside up by eight on a goal line blast early in the fourth which set preceded a Lewis pass to Gee Scott moments later to put the nail in the coffin. Skyview put up a tremendous fight, but Eastside’s composure was an impressive display of their continued success.

Coach Kohler Earns 300th Career Victory as O’Dea Downs Shelton in Memorial Classic
By Steve Dion

The Friday nightcap of the Memorial Classic matched the Shelton High Climbers of the newly created South Sound Conference against O’Dea whose legendary Coach Monte Kohler entered with a chance to cross a significant milestone which is 300 career wins as head coach of the Irish.

A slow start for both teams was the result of tight defense and erratic passing attempts from each offense. O’Dea struck first when their staunch offensive line opened a massive running lane for Parker D’Anna allowing the junior tailback to glide to the endzone. Minutes later, Connor Gregoire benefited from the same treatment for a touchdown of his own adding to O’Dea’s lead. Shelton recorded six before the break, but had an uphill battle in the second half.

The second half can be simply classified as ‘The Hunter Franco Show’ as the senior running back busted loose three times for long touchdown runs of 47, 51, & 44 yards respectively. This outburst proved too much for the Climbers when paired with the Irish defense clamping down in the final two quarters without allowing Shelton to score. At the end of the night, O’Dea moves to 2-0 and Coach Kohler earns win number 300 of his legendary coaching tenure.

Oak Harbor’s Powerful Ground Game Shines in Win Over Knights
By Steve Dion

A light slate of games to kick off week two of the high school football season took place Thursday included a WesCo clash featuring the visiting Oak Harbor Wildcats and host Kamiak Knights at Goddard Stadium. Both teams won in their season opener; which squad would push their record to 2-0?

Oak Harbor was off to the races early as they intercepted Kamiak on the first play of the game. This led to a 46-yard rumble to the pylon by Princeton Lollar Jr. who lived in the endzone all night long. Kamiak responded with a 5-yard strike from Matt Merk to Ben Barton.

However, the Wildcats powerful running game with Taeson Hardin and Lollar started to take its toll on the Knights defense and they started to take a control of the game. They led by three scores at the break.

As the second half wore on, the push up front by the staunch Oak Harbor offensive line helped the offense sustain drives and finish in the red zone. The Knights found the endzone twice more, but they could not surmount the massive lead accumulated by the Cats. Oak Harbor finished with over 600 yards on the ground and looks tough. The Wildcats 2-0 start may just be the tip of the iceberg for Coach Jay Turner’s bruisers from Whidbey Island.

Crusaders Defense Stymies Bullpups in Battle of Champions
By Steve Dion

Week one of the 2016 high school football season placed a pair of undefeated teams from last year on the same field to determine supremacy between the 3A and 4A classifications. Gonzaga Prep who claimed the 4A title over Skyline headed west to take on the Eastside Catholic Crusaders who are back-to-back 3A champs.

The new-look Crusader offense led by Ze’Shaun Lewis who coach Jeremy Thielbahr said he is very confident in on our interview earlier in the week opened the scoring early when he found scat-back Tyler Folkes up the seam from 12 yards out.

Dave McKenna who talked about his smash-mouth style of football in our exclusive game week interview demonstrated such by pounding the rock against the EC defense all night. Kasey Anthony evened the score with a 8 yard dash to the goal line.

Before halftime, Eastside found the endzone once more, a 7 yard strike from Lewis to Aiden Hector giving the home team a one-score leading heading into the locker room.

As the game wore on and Prep struggled to create big gains on offense, EC’s defense clamped down even more. Chris Lefau anchored a staunch front seven that kept the Bullpups of the scoreboard for the final three quarters of the game.

The Final Score:
Eastside Catholic 21, Gonzaga Prep 7.
