Federal Way Wins Back-To-Back 4A Titles
By Colin Caruso

Saturday- March 5th 2016 Boys 4A Championship
Tacoma Dome 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Kentwood 17 12 6 19 54
Federal Way 16 9 17 24 66

4A Champions – Federal Way Eagles

There is no better place to watch high school basketball in Washington state than the Tacoma Dome for state final action. In a matchup of two SPSL teams, the Kentwood Conquerors were looking to end Federal Way’s 42 game winning streak and bid for two consecutive state titles.

Kentwood came out of the gates playing sound basketball, cleaning up the defensive glass and playing excellent defense. They lost their previous two matchups against the Eagles of Federal Way, and they weren’t going to let this game go easily. A 29-25 halftime lead for the Conquerors provided a great boost to their fans for the final 16 minutes of action.

Jerome Collins, the head coach for the Eagles, gave his team a defensive focused talk at the half and it showed through the duration of the 3rd quarter. A 29-25 Conqueror lead turned into a 42-35 Eagle lead going into the fourth. The six point quarter for the Conquerors was their lowest of the tournament. On the offensive side, the Eagles were able to get out in transition and finish a number of uncontested layups.

With a seven point lead going into the fourth and all the momentum, the game was seemingly in the Eagles hands for another title. But Kentwood would not give up so easily. The lead was trimmed to as little as 3 early in the fourth, with the Conquerors battling possession by possession. But in the end, the combination of Ferron Flavors, Christian Jones, and Jalen McDaniels proved too tough for the Conquerors to surmount. Congratulations to the Federal Way Eagles for their 43rd consecutive win and back to back state titles!

The Final Score
Federal Way 66, Kentwood 54.

Tacoma Dome 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
O'Dea 9 12 11 17 49
Rainier Beach 26 17 14 13 70

3A Champions – Rainier Beach Vikings

In their third matchup of the year, the O’Dea Fighting Irish faced off against the Rainier Beach Vikings for the 3A basketball coveted state championship. Rainier Beach was fresh off a win over the #1 ranked Garfield Bulldogs, another Metro league team, and looking towards a dominating performance in the final.

Beach started the game on a frantic pace, seemingly knocking down every shot and consuming O’Dea with their defensive pressure. At halftime, Nkeil Nelson for the Vikings had as many points as the entire O’Dea team, 21 a piece. The Vikings took a 43-21 lead into halftime, seemingly ending the game at intermission.

O’Dea didn’t do much to trim the lead in the third quarter. Rainier Beach definitely slowed their pace down, shortening the game in favor of longer possessions. The 22 point halftime lead progressed to 25 for the Vikings, with a 57-32 advantage.

The expectations entering this contest leaned towards a close matchup. These two split their regular season meetings, surprising based on the outcome of this contest. Rainier Beach took the victory with ease, 70-49, amassing their 4th title in the last 5 years. A lot of sportsmanship was shown from both sides. Congratulations to Rainier Beach!

The Final Score
Rainier Beach 70, O’Dea 49.

Saturday- March 5th 2016 Girls 3A Championship
Tacoma Dome 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Arlington 8 16 4 12 40
Bellevue 14 21 12 22 69

3A Champions – Bellevue Wolverines

Entering the 2015-16 season, Coach Leah Krautter knew she had a talented squad, but didn’t know how all the pieces would fit together. After the first game of the season, she was encouraged this team was special.

After topping Lynnwood on Friday which may have been Bellevue’s toughest test to keep their unbeaten record intact, they entered championship Saturday with the expectation to close the deal and lift the trophy. To do so, they needed to get past Arlington who is no stranger to deep tournament runs. Much like the game played prior to this one between Rainier Beach and O’Dea, Bellevue outmatched Arlington from the early stages of the game and it carried throughout. By halftime, they built a double-digit lead which put the Eagles on the ropes. Gracie Castandea and Serafina Balderas needed to spark the Eagles to climb back into the game after solid contributions in the first two quarters.

The stifling Bellevue defense held Arlington to four points in the pivotal third quarter leading to 19% from the field in the second half. Meanwhile, the Wolverines kept the pedal down as Shelby Cansler and Quinessa Caylao-Do broke the game open as the duo combined for 41 points. The victory against the Royals on day two proved to be the quasi championship game as the vast majority of the second half was simply a wait for the inevitable. Congratulations to Bellevue on going wire to wire from the opening tip of the season.

Tacoma Dome 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Snohomish 9 8 13 18 48
Central Valley 12 10 13 22 57

4A Champions – Central Valley Bears

In a battle of two teams on incredible winning streaks, the Central Valley Bears took on the Snohomish Panthers for the 4A girls state championship. The Bears came into this game a perfect 28-0, and the Panthers, after losing their first three games, were riding a 23 game winning streak into this finals matchup.

Snohomish started the game in an interesting defensive matchup, with their tallest starter, Madeline Smith, guarding the Central Valley PG Mady Simmelink. Smith rarely left the key on the defensive side, giving Simmelink wide open looks. She capitalized with 5 first quarter points and Central Valley took a 12-9 lead into the second quarter.

The undefeated Bears began to pull away in the second, extending their lead to 11 and picking up their defensive intensity. But Snohomish would not quit; they are older and bigger than the Bears and they used their size to convert a few layups down the stretch before half. Central Valley took a 5 point lead into the locker room.

Madeline Smith for the Panthers began to take over after the half. She went on a personal 10-0 run, and halfway through the quarter she had 25 of her teams 30 points. The underdog Panthers tied the game later in the frame, looking to take their first lead since early in the first. But Lexie Hull responded for Central Valley, adding in a couple of short layups for her team leading 13 points. Even with Madeline Smith’s dominate performance, the lead remained 5 for the Bears, 35-30 entering the final quarter.

Snohomish began the 4th on a 5-0 run, tying the game again. But every time Snohomish tied it up, Central Valley would respond. This time it was Lacey Hull, Lexie’s twin, who knocked down a momentum shifting three pointer. The Bears never looked back. They completed their perfect 29-0 season with a well deserved 57-48 championship win!

Following their thrilling overtime victory against Lewis & Clark on Thursday, Snohomish earned a meeting in the semis with Bothell who put Kentlake away with relative ease in the opening round.

The game jumped out to a sluggish start with only a 14-10 halftime score as both teams struggled to find a rhythm and moreover the bottom of the cylinder.

Snohomish broke the game open in the third quarter by going on a 15-5 run which set up a race to the final whistle. Madison Pollock and Madeline Smith led the way with 17 points each. The Cougars who received 19 from Taya Corosdale were unable to make a late charge and the Panthers move on to the 4A championship!

Rainier Beach 16 24 19 22 81

Rainier Beach junior N’Keil Nelson

A battle of teams hailing from Seattle and Tacoma placed Rainier Beach and Lincoln in a Thursday lunchtime bout. The Abes enjoyed the home court advantage from the opening tip by taking a two point lead into the second frame. The Abes converted on a number of possessions in which they attacked the rim.

However, the suffocating Rainier Beach defense started to roll as the half wore on and posted 24 points in the second frame alone putting the Vikings up by a dozen at the break.

The contributions of Lincoln’s Brandon Cotton and Trevion Brown who netted 15 and 14 respectively proved not enough as leading scorer Sam Cunliffe who finished with 19 was joined by four other double figure scorers (Keith Smith, Marquis Gurski, Tijon Rodde, N’Kiel Nelson) before the final whistle. A rematch of the 2015 state final between Rainier Beach and Garfield takes place tomorrow at 5:30!

The high-flying Bulldogs led early with contributions by defensive specialist Terrell Brown and pure scorer Jaylen Nowell. However, CJ Elleby would not let the Eagles go down without a fight and knocked down bucket after bucket to keep Cleveland within striking distance.

The tremendous balance of the Bulldogs proved too much in the end with five double-figure scorers with Brown and Nowell tied at 16 apiece. Cleveland’s Fahad Sharif joined Elleby’s charge down the stretch with a combined 41 points in the contest forcing Garfield to keep their starters in for nearly the entire second half. Todd Beamer took control of the contest from the tip scoring in double figures before Skyview could register any points. Nia Alexander and Bria Rice led the charge with turnovers in Skyview’s back-court leading to easy buckets. Skyview eventually cobbled together a response to cut the lead down and give themselves a chance to talk things over at halftime and make a run down the stretch.

The Storm did exactly that by controlling the glass and challenging Beamer’s field goal attempts in the paint. The trio of Ashlee Comastro, Madison Lord, and Riley Friauf willed Skyview within one possession until Nia Alexander put the game on ice. Beamer’s leading scorer buried a three with the shot clock expiring pushing the Titans lead out of reach. Beamer advances to the semis on Friday.

Bellevue College 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Wilson 11 26 26 17 80
Garfield 33 29 26 30 118

Garfield Bulldogs

Defending 3A champions Garfield entered this season as a clear favorite to repeat in 2016 given their returning core group and added talent this year. Saturday’s regional contest with Wilson served as the Bulldogs final step to get back to the state tournament.

Wilson found themselves in a tough situation early when Garfield’s defense strung together a series of turnovers leading to transition buckets. This stifling defensive display resulted in 33 big first quarter points. The Rams were able to match the ‘Dogs bucket for bucket as the half progressed including five finishing with double digits led by senior captain David Jenkins Jr. who ended with 19. However, the halftime lead created by knock-down Jaylen Nowell jumpers and Terrell Brown slashing to the cup gave them an edge they would not put in jeopardy.

As the second half wore on, Wilson’s Nate Fisher found a groove recording a cool 17 points on 6/7 shooting, but former Wilson Ram Alphonso Anderson netted 20 in addition to 8 rebounds. This proved enough to eventually put this game on ice. Afterwards, Anderson talked about facing former friends on Wilson saying, “It was fun playing against the old guys. Dave, Montre; been playing with them since I was little.” When asked about the depth of this talented Bulldogs roster, Anderson responded, “We’ve got pretty much ten division-1 basketball players on the team. At practice, we get each other better.” Finally, he said the defensive intensity shown is a result of the team’s eagerness on offense and that, “Defense leads to dunks, so as many steals as we can get, the more dunks we get!” Ed Haskins finds himself three wins from three state titles in a row, can Garfield complete the task at hand?

The Final Score
Garfield 118, Wilson 80.

Bellevue senior Anna Wilson

Leah Krautter’s undefeated Wolverines continued their streak of dominance on Saturday night in Bellevue’s lopsided win over Wilson to earn another trip the TDome in the final week of the season. This game was decided before intermission when BHS took a 46-17 lead into the locker room. Tatiana Streun, Quinessa Caylao-Do, and Anna Wilson led the charge by combining for 36 first half points. Kiki Knox and Erica Hamlin countered with 7 & 6 respectively in the half, but this proved to not be enough.

The second half was merely procedural with the result evident allowing Bellevue to demonstrate its depth. Nine Wolverines scored to which Streun commented about after the game by saying, “We don’t have bench players. We all contribute…everyone can shoot, everyone can pass the ball. We just play as a team and it’s great to be a part of.” In regards to the team’s chemistry with new players added this season, Streun added, “It’s like they’ve been here for four years and there’s nothing holding us back as a team.”

The all-around balance of BHS helped the Wolverines reassure their position as one of the favorites heading into finals weekend. Will Bellevue win the requisite three games to hoist the hardware and claim a perfect season?

Bellevue Wolverines

Despite having only 6 players active in Saturday’s regional game against Mountlake Terrace, Bellevue was able to punch their ticket in a low-scoring affair with the Hawks. An early Bellevue lead created by the likes of Sharif Khan and sharpshooter Colin Suter was gradually whittled away heading into halftime as Khyree Armstead found his rhythm recording all nine of his points in the first two quarters.

They were unable to carry the momentum into the third quarter when the Wolverines put the clamps down on defense. Mikey Henn and Cole Cirillo helped give their team a lead Terrace would not surmount. As a result, the Wolverines find themselves playing March basketball once again.

After the game, Sharif Khan discussed the excitement of returning to the Dome stating, “It’s a great feeling just knowing we’re going back there, and we have one more shot at it.” When asked about the team’s performance on Saturday, he said, “Guys stepped up big time, Cole Cirillo was huge for us, Andrew Kenny played extremely tough, and then Colin Suter was knocking down shots.” If they end up meeting with favorites Garfield or Rainier Beach in the final game, Khan explains the importance of “mental toughness. As long as we come out with an attitude that we can compete is all you can ask for.”

Ellensburg 19 9 16 26 70

Ellensburg senior Coleman Sparling

A clash of elite scorers told the story in a 2A winner-to-state match-up between Mark Morris and Ellensburg. Coleman Sparlings game-high 34 points proved enough to lead the Bulldogs past a 32 point effort by Monarchs junior Will Burghardt. The Monarchs carried a slim lead into the intermission through an increasingly emphasized defensive effort as the first half wore on.

It appeared this game was headed for a close finish as the second half progressed. However, Ellensburg put that possibility to bed when Bryce Helgeson, Trey Bennett, and Sparling put together a run that caught the Monarchs off guard. This put Bill Bakamus in a coaching situation where they needed to foul the Bulldogs and hope they could catch up by slowing the game down. Ellensburg didn’t waver and was able to stave off Mark Morris for a comfortable win.

After the game, Bulldogs coach Del Enders talked about their game plan down the stretch which included “speeding them up, forcing them to take quick shots; quick rebounds, and that just plays right into it then they have to foul us.” In regards to Sparling’s big time performance, Enders said, “He would not be denied. 19 points in the first half, all kinds of rebounds.” As Ellensburg prepares for the state finals, the Bulldogs will focus on free throw shooting considering “throughout the game, especially on one-and-ones, we’re notorious for leaving the front end.”

Their balanced attack included four double digit scorers with Brooke Walling, Libby Bartleson, Zsaleh Parvas, and Alexis Troy recording 18, 14, and a dozen apiece respectively.

After facing an eight point deficit at halftime, Jenni Johnson (23 points, 6 rebound, 6 steals) and Janealle Sutterlict (13 points, 5 steals) led a third quarter charge that brought the Wildcats within a single bucket heading into the final quarter. Could Toppenish take the lead?

Midway through the final quarter, Parvas knocked down a three pointer following a blocked shot and outlet pass. She was fouled in the process and the bucket seemed to remove any remaining momentum the Cats still held. With the victory, Mark Morris will vie for back-to-back titles next weekend.

The nightcap regional game on Friday at Bellevue College featured one-loss Bothell and the Curtis Vikings. With a trip to the tournament on the line, Bothell proved their consistency this season by jumping out to a comfortable first half lead through major contributions by top scorer Taya Corosdale. The senior post recorded 13 of her game-high 17 in the first two quarters to help the Cougs take a 22-12 lead into the break.

Bothell’s lead continued to grow in the third quarter with a series of a transition buckets by Keyonna Jones, Sydney Cowan, and aforementioned Corosdale. King’s Knights

Daylee Hanson’s game-high 12 points led defending 1A champs King’s past Bellevue Christian in an exciting regional match-up with a trip to Yakima on the line. A strong start for the Knights was met with a long rally for the Vikings which extended into the third quarter.

King’s regained the lead late in the third quarter after a technical foul garnered multiple free throws for King’s. The Knights clung to a narrow lead as the end of regulation quickly approached when Bellevue Christian made their move. Nicole Bloch led the charge with 10 points as the Bellevue Christian deficit shrunk. A late turnover by KHS gave the Viks a chance tie the game up. Rachel Berg lofted up a three-pointer to draw the score even, but the ball lodged itself between the rim and backboard which turned the ball back over to King’s and eventually allowed the Knights to hang on for a four point victory.

After the game, Coach Dan Taylor talked about the challenge of defending a state title stating, “We can’t let that sense of fear of losing dictate the way we play.” He also mentioned the need for rest heading into the final weekend of the season by saying, “We’re fatigued from a mental standpoint…we need to work on our execution and just get ready for who our next opponent is.”
