Bothell Drops Puyallup in First Round of Playoffs
By Steven Dion

The Bothell Cougars had a full week to think about their loss to Skyline last Friday. The 10th ranked team in 4A earned the opportunity to host a first round playoff game versus Puyallup from the SPSL. The Cougs have protected Pop Keeney Stadium nicely this year by beating their opponents by the combined score of 173-34 at home. Tonight was no exception. The Cougs broke the game wide open early by forcing three-and-outs and capitalizing on offense. Sam McPherson returned a punt 70 yards for the score to put BHS up 12-0 in the first. Before halftime, Bothell opened the playbook to the back page by testing senior receiver Cameron Gale’s arm from the flat; a connection with Jackson Keimig in the back of the end zone. At half, the host was up 33-0.

Halftime did not seem to halt the Bothell onslaught as the second half kickoff was returned 100 yards by McPherson. The Viks responded and were finally able to sustain a drive that yielded a handful of red zone snaps, one of which ended with a DJ Winter touchdown. The running clock was in effect during the second half so the scoring subsided greatly. A late score by Bothell was capitalized by a made point-after-touchdown by junior kicker Nicole Daoura. The Cougar sideline erupted as the lone female on either roster notched her first score of the season. Puyallup scored once more on a reception by Levi Jordan to cease the offense for both sides. After four quarters of play, Bothell walked away with a 54-14 win in dominating fashion. The Cougs advance, the Viks end their season 6-4.

Top Performer:

Bothell
Samuel McPherson – 4 total TDs, 2 rushing of 11 and 9 yards, 2 kickoff returns of 70 and 100 yards

Eastside Catholic Runs a Crusade Against the Abes
By Colin Caruso

On a crisp November evening in Sammamish, the Eastside Catholic Crusaders faced off against the Lincoln Abes in the 3A playoffs round of 32. This was a tough first round playoff matchup, with both teams ranked in the top 10 in the state in 3A. Eastside Catholic jumped out to a 21-0 lead early, capitalizing on two Abe turnovers and showing great success in both running and throwing the football. Lincoln needed a first half score and put together a great 2-minute drill drive at the end of the first half, capped off by a 2 yard TD run from sophomore quarterback Jordan Kitna with just 46 seconds remaining in the half. On the ensuing kickoff, Lincoln gave up a 60 yard return and a three play touchdown drive to the Crusaders in just 33 seconds, a brutal blow to the Abes. Eastside Catholic took a comfortable 28-7 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the locker room at half Lincoln needed another quick score to stay in the ballgame and got it on a beautiful pass and catch from Kitna to senior Rayshaun Miller. But again the Crusaders responded, this time a touchdown run from sophomore workhorse back Brandon Wellington, his second touchdown of the game. Both teams added another score before the contest was over, and the Crusaders topped the Abes by a final of 41-21. Eastside Catholic’s next contest will be Marysville-Pilchuck in the round of 16 in Marysville.

Top Performers:

Lincoln
Jordan Kitna – TD pass of 80 yards and TD run of 2 yards

Eastside Catholic
Harley Kirsch – 3 TD passes of 20 yards, 15 yards, and 22 yards

Highline Picks Up First Win of Season in Finale Against Franklin
By Steven Dion

A blustery evening at Highline Memorial Stadium was the perfect recipe for the host Pirates to garner their first win of the season. The obstacle standing in the way of the Pirates’ treasure was Metro League opponent Franklin. The first of several big plays by Highline was a 70 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by junior linebacker Kingston Aloua. Before the first quarter ended, HHS’ Brandon Baker returned a punt 52 yards for a score. Franklin responded early in the second on a 39 yard scamper by James Flowers III. Before halftime, the Pirates scored conventionally on a reception by Baker from Kyle Tief. At break, Highline led 21-6.

Special teams miscues haunted the Quakers in the first half and the trend continued in the final 24 minutes. Brandon Baker took a punt to the house for the second time early in the third, this time from 65 yards out. This gave the Pirates a comfortable lead that was sustainable for the remainder of the contest. Montae Rainwater scurried to the corner pylon from three yards out in Lodrigo Omar’s jersey after Rainwater’s was ripped on a run. The fourth quarter featured a resurgence by the Quakers, but it was too late. Scores from Flowers III and a passing touchdown by Montique Jenkins highlighted the final frame for Franklin. When the horn sounded, Highline picked up their coveted first victory of the season with a 42-22 result.

Top Performers:

Franklin
James Flowers III – 2 rushing TDs of 39 and 2 yards

Highline
Brandon Baker – 3 total TDs, 2 punt returns from 65 & 52 yards, one reception of 17 yards

Spanaway Lake Offense Erupts Versus Mount Rainier
By Steven Dion

The final game for both SPSL’s Rams and Sentinels was played at a windy, rainy Highline Memorial Stadium Thursday night. This game did not have any playoff implications but school pride was on the line, and the effort displayed during all 48 minutes was evident. Spanaway Lake set the tone early by establishing the running game and finding the end zone on a 14-yard run by Kyle Mason. The Sentinels’ ability to pound the ball up the field on the ground led to lengthy possessions. Joseph Martin punched in a 3-yard QB keeper to give Spanaway Lake a 14-0 lead early in the second frame. A safety and another Martin score were added before intermission to give SLHS a 24-0 lead.

The teams emerged from the locker room to close out their seasons with a more competitive second half of play. Ram senior quarterback Matthew Dammeier remained poised in the pocket despite heavy pressure by the likes of Augustus Ndow. Mount Rainier found the scoreboard on a goal-line push, but the incompletion on the two-point conversion squelched any chance of a comeback. The Sentinels were able to find the end zone twice more before the final buzzer to finish the season on a high note with a 38-6 win.

Bellevue Christian Lights up Scoreboard Against Chimacum
By Steven Dion

The first of two crossover games for the Vikings of Clyde Hill and Cowboys from the peninsula was played on a chilly Saturday night on Mac Field at Lake Washington High School. This was the second matchup between the two squads; the first contest a 28-6 victory by BCHS at Chimacum on September 20. The six weeks between then and now demonstrate drastic separation between the two teams. The Viks were able to double their offensive output by putting up a staggering 56 points while pitching a defensive shutout in the process.

The first score of the game was a dazzling 70-yard run by Viking QB Kemper McQuaid. The 5’10 senior was effective with his legs as well as his arm as he tallied 5 total touchdowns, all in the first half. The BCHS offensive line allowed McQuaid along with the other backfield options like Josh Hazen and Michael Dougherty to get to the edge and turn up field. A wrecking ball on offense and defense was Vik TE/DL Tate Razor. His ability to catch passes over defenders and run through defensive lineman was a difference make in the contest. The display of sportsmanship was top notch despite the lopsided score as opposing players picked each other up and gave helmet taps after plays to show respect for the competition. The final score was Bellevue Christian 56 Chimacum 0. With the win, BCHS travels to Nooksack Valley to face the Pioneers next Friday.

Bellevue Closes Another Undefeated Regular Season
By Colin Caruso

In somewhat of a rivalry game, the Bellevue Wolverines were matched with the Mercer Island Islanders to close another undefeated regular season for the Wolverines. The rivalry is much more apparent in basketball, as these two teams battle competitively on the hard-court but Bellevue has had the upper hand on the gridiron.

Bellevue struck fast and early, with a 78 yard touchdown pass from QB Timmy Haehl to sophomore standout receiver Isaiah Gilchrist. The story of this game was Gilchrist, who added another touchdown catch and a blocked FG return for a touchdown, for three scores on the day. The Wolverines scored 28 points in the first half but allowed a late score to the Islanders, a pass from backup QB Alfonso Gonzalez to Eric Kim to trim the lead to 28-7 at half.

Bellevue was again dominate in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points to secure the 49-7 victory and another undefeated regular season. Mercer Island, after three losses to close the season, will finish with a respectable 4-4 record.

Top Performers:
Mercer Island
Alfonso Gonzalez – TD pass

Bellevue
Isaiah Gilchrist – 3TD (2 receiving, one blocked FG return)

Oak Harbor Improves Playoff Path With Win Over Meadowdale
By Steven Dion

A 3A Wesco showdown between the Mavericks of Meadowdale and Oak Harbor Wildcats carried significant playoff implications. This matchup on Friday night at Edmonds Stadium provided the winner with hosting Mount Si next week; the loser to travel to 3A juggernaut Bellevue to take on the Wolverines. Both teams got off to a slow start as no points were put on the board in the first quarter. The field position battle was evident early as big runs by Wildcat tailbacks Dejon Devroe and Julian Faralan and booming punts by Mavericks’ Taylor Linton neutralized one another. Meadowdale was credited with a safety after a Wildcat long snap rolled out of the end zone. However, Oak Harbor responded by turning a Savion Hollins-Passmore interception into a touchdown run by Faralan. Before half, O.H. found the end zone once more on a 52-yard strike from Clay Doughty to Dyllan Harris. Score at the break was 13-2 in favor of the visitors.

When play resumed, the Mavericks quickly brought the game back with one possession on a 1-yard run by Muhleak Braxton. Perhaps the most critical play of the game occurred minutes later and likely decided the victor. Meadowdale drove down the field after forcing a quick three-and-out after the Braxton TD. As a Maverick receiver was diving into the end zone, the ball was jarred loose and recovered by Oak Harbor. This play deflated a Meadowdale squad which began to capture the momentum of the contest. From that point on, the Mavs offense struggled as dropped balls hurt QB Jerremiah Evans’ confidence, who threw a pair of late interceptions. Oak Harbor capitalized on TD scampers by Princeton Lollar and Faralan for the second time. When the final buzzer sounded, the Wildcats walked away with a 27-8 victory.

Top Performers:
Oak Harbor
Julian Faralan – 2 rushing TDs of 6 and 17 yards

Meadowdale

To The King, a Crown; Skyline
By Colin Caruso

At risk was the #1 team in the 4A KingCo-Crown league, with the matchup of all-too-familiar opponents who have battled well over the past several years. The Skyline Spartans traveled to their neighbor Issaquah to face the Eagles, the winner to secure a matchup against the top of the KingCo-Crest league. Students and fans from all over came to create a buzz of noise that lasted until the game concluded, which saw

Issaquah broke the scoring drought first in the second quarter, a 44 yard pass from senior quarterback Jack Neary to his senior star wide receiver Derek Chapman. The Issaquah sideline exploded as their Eagles took a 7-0 lead. The teams would exchange field goals later in the quarter and Issaquah took a 10-3 lead into half.

Skyline coach Mat Taylor had something brewing in that halftime speech, because his Spartans came out ready to play in the second half. A 27-0 third quarter in favor of the Spartans completely changed the complexion of the game. Touchdowns came from all different avenues; a pass from Kilton Anderson to Derek Loville, two rushing scores, and a special teams score. Issaquah needed a response and succeeded early in the fourth on another strike from Neary to Chapman to cut the lead to 30-17. But Skyline’s defense held tough, with an amazing second half performance from their defensive line to pressure Neary relentlessly. Skyline secured the victory 30-17 and a matchup with the 4A KingCo-Crest champion Bothell.

Top Performers:
Skyline
Kilton Anderson – 26 yard TD pass

2A Lindbergh Routs 3A Franklin
By Colin Caruso

With Franklin’s cheer squad and band bringing the off field action, Memorial Stadium proved to be another formidable location for a Thursday night high school football showdown between the undefeated Lindbergh Eagles and the struggling Franklin Quakers. Lindbergh jumped on the Quakers early and often, compiling a 41-0 lead entering halftime. The connection between senior quarterback Tyrell Shavers and junior receiver Khalil Burton accounted for three of those seven touchdowns from 25, 43, and 20 yards out.

Lindbergh slowed down their offensive output in the second half, putting in their second string early in the third quarter. They added another score later in the third, a 55 yard run by junior Devon Jackson, but those would be the last points for the Eagles.

Franklin began their offensive output late in the third with a beautiful pass from quarterback Montique Jenkins to sophomore wideout Malik Abdil-Haqq for 54 yards and a touchdown. Jenkins would throw another touchdown in the fourth quarter, and the Quakers would add another score to bring their total to 20. But Lindbergh was too tough in the first half, and took the game 47-20.

Life Christian Academy Defense Pitches Second Half Shutout in Road Win
By Steven Dion

Cedar Park Christian played host to 1A Nisqually division opponent Life Christian Academy/Seattle Christian Eagles. The home team from Bothell was celebrating homecoming on Bergh Field at Juanita High School. CP rewarded the crowd with an interception which would later result in the first score of the game, an 18-yard run by speedy Andrew Rickman. It wasn’t until the second frame that Life Christian got on the scoreboard. Senior quarterback Taylor Roelofs ran and threw for a touchdown in before halftime. Another long TD scamper by Rickman and a 37-yard field goal by David Grigoryan rounded out the scoring in the first half. Cedar Park led 16-14 going into the locker room.

Life Christian Academy returned from halftime with a noticeable hunger to win the game by turning up the heat on the defensive side of the ball. Jarel Jones, Logan Devries, and Luke Grocott put heavy pressure on Cedar Park’s freshman QB Rowan Parmenter. The momentum began to shift in favor of the visitors even though the third quarter was scoreless for both sides. However, a long drive by CP that was thwarted by a 4th down stop resulted in a lead-changing score under the legs of Roelofs. Less than a minute later, the LCA player of the game ran another touchdown, this time from 45 yards. Cedar Park ran back the ensuing kickoff into LCA territory and moved the ball to the 4 yard line, but failed to score. The visiting squad picks up a crucial league win as Life Christian moves to (2-1, 3-4 overall) and Cedar Park falls to (2-1, 5-3 overall).

Lakeside Rocks Cleveland
By Colin Caruso

With Kanye West preparing to go on stage just a few blocks away, the Lakeside Lions made the short trek to Memorial Stadium to play the home-side Cleveland Eagles. As always, the Cleveland cheer team increased the decibel level and provided a great atmosphere for this ballgame. Lakeside jumped out to an early 14-0 in the first quarter, backed by a 21 yard run by junior Cole Stephens and a pass from senior QB Adam Hinthorne to classmate Mike Padden. Cleveland answered early in the second with a 12 yard TD run from sophomore Zechariah Brown, but Lakeside countered with three straight scores, an interception returned for a touchdown by Jack Betcher and another score for both Padden and Stephens. Cleveland answered with a late score in the second by Rachaun McConico, but trailed 35-14 at the break.

With a 21 point lead in hand, Lakeside slowed the game down in the second half, taking their senior QB out and primarily running the football. Cleveland added a couple of late scores in the fourth, but ultimately it was too little too late, with the Lions winning by a final of 45-28. Kudos to Lakeside kicker Trevor Peterson who knocked in a 41 yard field goal in the fourth quarter, what a great kick!

On a brisk fall night in Bellevue the undefeated home side Wolverines were matched up against an undefeated opponent, the Mount Si Wildcats. It was homecoming for Bellevue, so their stands were packed with students and parents. As for Mount Si, this was an opportunity to tackle the #1 team in the country, and their fans knew it. Both stands were packed to watch the best that 3A Washington has to offer.

Mount Si received the opening kickoff and put together a great drive, a mix of passing and running, to punch in a touchdown and take the lead 7-0. Their fan section went crazy; could this be the year that someone tops Bellevue? The Wolverines put a quick stop to that thought. 52 straight points from Bellevue, sparked by huge runs from highly touted running back and defensive back Budda Baker and electrifying quarterback Timmy Haehl, put this game out of reach early in the third quarter. Mount Si found the endzone once more in the fourth quarter to make the final score a little friendlier to the eye for Wildcat fans, 52-13.

Late Score Propels Woodinville over Redmond
By Steven Dion

A crucial 4A KingCo Crest battle between Woodinville and Redmond took place at a chilly Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell on Thursday night in front of animated student sections. The league win at stake created a playoff-like environment with the postseason on the horizon. The Falcons drew first blood with a goal line push by Mosses Lee. A big run by Brad Roland set up the score nicely. Redmond woke up in the second quarter by recovering a fumble and turning it into 7 on a 57-yard pass by Zach Wheat. Before halftime, the Mustangs found the end zone once more on a scramble by Wheat. The pocket broke down so the senior tucked and ran it to the corner pylon after getting key blocks downfield. The teams headed to the locker room at 14-7 with Redmond on top.

The Falcons wasted no time to get the offense rolling as Dylan Axelson busted past the goal line on fourth down with less than three minutes into the quarter. At this point, dropped passes, penalties, and short-lived drives started to define the game. The punt unit for each team worked overtime throughout the night, so field position was crucial to build momentum. Redmond regained the lead in the fourth on a 1 yard touchdown run. Woodinville trailed by 4 points with less than 3 minutes remaining when they received the ball. A clutch 4th down reception kept the chains moving. With 0:47 left, Will Jack floated one to Micah Hamilton in the corner of the end zone to grab a lead late. On the ensuing Redmond drive, Ian Biddle picked off a desperation pass. When the dust settled, Woodinville escaped with a 23-20 victory.

Tahoma Conquers the Conquerors
By Colin Caruso

Even with the Seahawks on Thursday night football, the French Field stands filled up well to see the Tahoma Bears travel to Kent to play the Kentwood Conquerors. Tahoma spoiled the home field advantage of the Conquerors, controlling both lines of scrimmage and putting lots of pressure on Kentwood sophomore quarterback Brian Campbell. The Bears put together two great drives in the first quarter, marching straight down the field, but only capitalizing on one TD, a 1 yard run by senior Joe Donahue. Kentwood responded later in the second quarter, after not moving the ball well at all, with a 79 yard pass from Campbell to senior Terrence Grady. But a dagger at the end of the half altered the momentum in favor of the Bears, with a 33 yard touchdown pass from Bears quarterback Shane Nelson to senior Deshon Williams with no time left on the clock to take the halftime lead 14-7.

The Bears turned up their defense in the second half, allowing just one more big play for a score, but otherwise holding Kentwood’s great rushing attack at bay. Grady capitalized on another huge passing play, this time 65 yards from Campbell to tie the game at 14, but Tahoma was too tough. The Bears added two more scores, one in the third and one in the fourth, to close the game 26-14.

Top Performers:

Deshon Williams – 2TD catches

O’Dea Shuts Out Undefeated Bishop Blanchet
By Colin Caruso

In the twentieth anniversary of Blanchet’s last win over the O’Dea Fighting Irish, the Braves fans and sideline were expecting something special. This was a very dominate Blanchet team, coming in to this Catholic matchup at 5-0, looking for an upset. But the Irish had other plans.

O’Dea took down the Bishop Blanchet Braves by a final of 35-0. Granted, the score wasn’t as indicative of the game play, as Blanchet had two drives inside the O’Dea ten yard line, and a total of six drives finishing in O’Dea territory. The Braves’ big crutch was penalties and four costly turnovers which all eventually turned into O’Dea scores.

O’Dea stuck with their typical ground and pound offense, with Myles Gaskin getting the bulk of the carries for the Irish. He scored their second touchdown of the game, and quarterback Pierre LeDorze capitalized on three short runs, all resulting in touchdowns. Blanchet will have to wait one more year to see if they can top the Irish. With their outrageously strong sophomore class, there is a chance that this now 20 year losing streak could come to an end soon.

Top Performers:
Bishop Blanchet
Oshea Trujillo – 15 carries for 68 yards

Thomas Jefferson Spoils Auburn’s Homecoming
By Colin Caruso

Going into the fourth quarter of this contest, both the Auburn sideline and fan section were fully prepared to win this football game. The Trojans were up by eleven, dominating the line of scrimmage on offense, and had the crowd amped up on their homecoming night. In came the Thomas Jefferson Raiders, down by two scores to begin the fourth, with no answer for the Auburn offense. That is when quarterback Niko De La Cruz began to heat up. He threw an earlier touchdown on the Raiders first possession on a double reverse, a beautiful pass to James Fitch to take an early lead, but found himself trailing entering the final quarter.

On the first play in the fourth quarter, De La Cruz, in Russell Wilson type fashion, scrambled left and right and spotted Phillip Cuadron wide open on the left sideline. Cuadron then ran another twenty yards down the sideline for a beautiful 50 yard pitch and catch to cut the lead to five after the failed point after, 23-18. The Raiders gave Auburn two first downs on penalties in their ensuing drive, one on an offside, and one on a costly facemask that put the Trojans deep into Raider territory. But the Raiders held and forced a turnover on downs, getting the ball back midway through the fourth quarter. The Raiders marched right down the field and De La Cruz capped off the drive with a 1 yard TD run, followed by a scramble for the 2-point conversion, to take a 26-23 lead with just 48 seconds on the clock.

Auburn’s offense, primarily a running attack, is not equipped to make the big passing plays down the field when they have little time. They instead settled for a few shorter passes, more in line with their playing scheme. The short plays were too little too late, and Thomas Jefferson pulled off the upset on the road, 26-23.

Bonney Lake’s Second Half Surge Prevails Over Decatur
By Steven Dion

Momentum is a powerful force that can build quickly in sports; the visiting Bonney Lake Panthers proved this to be true Thursday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium against the Fighting Gators of Decatur. The home team got on the scoreboard early with a 69 yard strike from one Isaiah to another: Hatch to Diggs. The junior quarterback looked comfortable in the pocket early and was able to make big plays through scrambling. Hatch found Josiah Goulding for another first quarter score. The second quarter featured a spectacular interception by BL’s Dillon Jordan and a touchdown for the Panthers. Isaiah Weed connected with Jordan from 23 yards out. First half field possession was controlled by Decatur and they appeared to be poised for a win and 24 minutes away from doing so.

Panther head coach Jason Silbaugh must have had a scintillating halftime speech because his Bonney Lake team came out swinging in the second half. The opening kickoff in the third was returned 85 yards for a touchdown by Robert Combs. Just over a minute later, Combs found the end zone on a 59 yard bubble screen pass by Weed. The Panther defensive unit responded to the offensive surge by shutting down the Gator attack. Their front seven contained nicely by eliminating big gains by Diggs. Cameron Goenner of the Panthers even blocked two punts, one for a safety. Bonney Lake scored 31 unanswered points in the third quarter! The fourth quarter was rather uneventful, as the game had gotten away from Decatur. A bright spot for the Gators was a 60 yard run by Diggs for the score with 4 seconds remaining. Football typically requires a full four quarters to win, but for the Panthers tonight, they captured lighting in a bottle in one.

Top Performers:
Bonney Lake
Robert Combs 4 TDs (85 yard KO return, 59 yard reception, 6 yard reception, 10 yard run)

Decatur
Isaiah Diggs 2 TDs (69 yard reception, 60 yard run)

Bishop Blanchet Dismantles Bainbridge on Homecoming
By Steven Dion

A sunny October afternoon at Mickey Naish Field served as the setting for Bishop Blanchet’s homecoming as they welcomed Bainbridge. The visiting Spartans squad has been battling injuries to many of their players which placed even a greater advantage to the host Braves team. Blanchet made their first of many trips to the end zone less than two minutes into the game on a 51 yard pass from Jacob Wheatley to Ray Siderius. Less than two minutes later, Nico Mutiloa blocked a punt and ran it back 29 yards for the score. Bishop Blanchet tailback Oshea Trujillo scored two of his four touchdowns in the first frame. Bainbridge was overmatched in every aspect of this contest. The front seven of the Blanchet defense pressured Spartan quarterback Connor Teddy all day. In addition, the tackling and blocking of the Braves was ferocious. At halftime, Blanchet led 61-0.

The running clock rule was implemented to begin the second half. At this point, BBHS changed personnel on the field and the high-octane scoring began to wane. Teddy found fellow Spartan Casey Brink for a big gain in the second half. Unfortunately, they failed to score on the drive. Blanchet’s Jon Flanagan notched six in the third on a goal line run. The Braves last score came on a fumble recovery by David Gats. The final score was 75-0 in favor of Bishop Blanchet. This program has been on the rise the last handful of years and it was evident this game served to even the score from the Bainbridge victory over the Braves a few years ago.

Top Performers:

Darrington Loggers Chop Down Seattle Lutheran
By Colin Caruso

On a beautiful day in Seattle with the sun shining, the Darrington Loggers traveled south to the big city to take on the Seattle Lutheran Saints. Both of these teams seemingly didn’t want to hold onto the football for the first quarter, which saw six turnovers, three from each team prior to a Bruce Massingale 99 yard score from the Loggers. The Saints turned the ball over again on their next possession, and this time Lane Monteith pounded the ball in the endzone for the Loggers, taking a 12-0 lead into the second quarter.

The game turned sour for the Saints in the second quarter. Two more turnovers for the Saints and a 28 point quarter for the Loggers really put this game out of reach. The Saints were able to get on the board late in the second quarter with a great TD run by Abijah Smith, but still they trailed 40-7 at the half.

The Loggers would tack on two more scores in the third quarter, and an additional score in the fourth, to bring their total to a whopping 60 points on the day. Darrington now moves to 4-0 overall with a good opportunity to make a run deep into the playoffs.

Jackson Homecoming Thwarted by Kamiak
By Colin Caruso

In the second game of the night at Everett Memorial Stadium, the Kamiak Knights took on the Jackson Timberwolves in Jackson’s homecoming game. Jackson packed the stands in a blackout, but Kamiak and their offensive line were too much for Jackson to handle throughout the contest. Kamiak received the opening kickoff, marched straight down the field and capped off the drive with a Tyler Webley touchdown run. No passes were attempted on the drive.

Kamiak forced a Jackson punt on Jackson’s first possession, and Brady Methven returned the punt all the way to the Jackson 2 yard line. A bad snap on the next play kept Jackson in the contest, as the Timberwolves leaped on the ball deep in their own territory and secured the recovery. However, Kamiak’s defense held strong again, forced another punt, and put together another nice drive. The drive was capped by an Austin Hall rushing touchdown. He also added the two point conversion run to take the lead 14-0 after the first frame.

Jackson got on the board early in the second quarter with a much needed score, a 64 yard scamper by senior Nick White to close the gap to 14-7. But Kamiak’s Hall answered the call again, punching in another rushing TD to take the lead 21-7 into halftime.

The Knights forced a three and out on Jackson’s possession following the halftime festivities, and punted to Methven again. This time he wasn’t brought down, and ran all the way down the far sideline for an early score in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 28-7 in favor of the Knights. Jackson was not phased, and White ran for another touchdown for the Timberwolves to get them back in the contest at 28-14. But Kamiak’s offensive and defensive lines were too tough for the Timberwolves, with Webley rushing for another score in the fourth quarter. Jackson was able to get on the board again late in the fourth, but Kamiak took the contest by a final of 35-20.

Top Performers:

Austin Hall – 2 rushing TD
Tyler Webley – 2 rushing TD

Mountlake Terrace Capitalizes on Turnovers and Tops Everett
By Colin Caruso

In a game that saw 11 turnovers, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks were able to defeat the Everett Seagulls by a final of 28-13. Everett received the opening kickoff and pulled a great reverse on their first play from scrimmage, getting deep inside Mountlake Terrace territory. The drive was capped off by a 4 yard touchdown scamper by running back Ahmed Kamagate to take the lead 7-0. Mountlake Terrace responded with a forceful drive of their own, marching down the field. With only one passing play on the drive, the Hawks punched in a short touchdown run by senior Chance Ragsdale to tie the game at 7. After a few fumbles and interceptions, Everett fumbled again on a pitch play and linebacker Toby Munnis picked it up for the Hawks and ran it back for a touchdown, taking a 14-7 lead. Mountlake Terrace capitalized on another Everett turnover on their next possession, and added another TD run to take the lead 21-7. However, Everett put together a great drive at the end of the first half and received a very favorable call on a passing touchdown from quarterback Griffey Lytle to Sam Loomis to go down at half by just 8, 21-13.

Mountlake Terrace dominated the line of scrimmage throughout the contest, and even more so in the second half. Everett did not score in the second half, and the Hawks held the Seagulls to 24 carries on the day for just 16 rushing yards. Everett was then forced to pass, and Terrace defenders made some incredible plays in the secondary to secure three interceptions and a 28-13 victory.

Issaquah Aerial Assault Too Much For Roosevelt
By Steven Dion

The first of two matchups on Leon H. Brigham Field at Memorial Stadium on the first Friday of October featured the host Roosevelt Roughriders and Issaquah. The visiting Eagles squad set the tempo early by completing a 23 yard touchdown strike from Jack Neary to Derek Chapman. Issaquah scored 7 more points a mere 34 seconds later on a 7 yard reception by Jeff Shipley. The Eagles found the end zone one more time in the first frame to take a quick 21-0 lead. The Riders got onto the scoreboard with a 2 yard QB sneak by John Peterson. The efficient passing attack of Issaquah was sustained throughout the entire first half as they notched two more TDs by Shipley again and Tommy Nelson. At the break, the Eagles had a comfortable 35-7 lead.

Roosevelt came out of the locker room with a strong defensive game plan which ultimately shut out Issaquah the rest of the way. But the Riders had a lot of scoring to do. With just over 2 minutes remaining in the third Ian Ashbaugh hauled in a pass from Peterson for six. The Eagles defense was stingy in the redzone throughout the game, preventing several first and goal opportunities. Issaquah’s ability to take a stranglehold of the game early allowed them to control the tempo the rest of the game and ultimately walk away with a convincing 35-13 win.

Top Performers:
Issaquah
Jack Neary – 5 TD passes of 23,7,31,5,28

Skyline Eats Garfield’s Lunch
By Colin Caruso

Memorial Stadium was a great site for this KingCo matchup between the Skyline Spartans and the Garfield Bulldogs. The home Bulldogs brought a good amount of noise, but couldn’t match their fans intensity on the field. The first six minutes of the contest saw a fumbling brigade from both teams. The Spartans received and fumbled on their second play from scrimmage. Garfield then fumbled the ball on the next play of the game, and Skyline drove down and scored their first TD on a Kilton Anderson QB keeper to take the lead 7-0. Garfield received the ensuing kick, and fumbled on their next offensive play. Two plays from scrimmage for the Bulldogs, and both resulted in fumbles. Skyline recovered the ball deep in Garfield territory, presumably ready to punch in another touchdown, but they fumbled on their next play and Garfield recovered! Four turnovers, two from each side, in the first 6 minutes of the game!

Garfield punted after recovering Skyline’s second fumble and Spartan Elijah Nichols returned it 72 yards to go up 14-0 halfway through the first quarter. Garfield then fumbled the kickoff (too many fumbles, in my opinion) and Skyline recovered deep in Garfield territory. Chandler Wong rushed the ball in for Skyline 3 plays later to take the lead 21-0, still in the first quarter. Anderson would hook up with Wong once more prior to the first quarter end, on a 4 yard TD pass, to take a 28-0 lead.

At this point the game was in hand, and the next three quarters of play saw just 20 points total. Garfield did end up getting on the board in the fourth quarter with a QB keeper from Winfred Roberson, to cut the Spartan lead to 34. But that was too little too late, as the Spartans rolled 41-7.

Top Performers:
Skyline
Kilton Anderson – 2 rushing TD, 2 passing TD
Chandler Wong – rushing TD, receiving TD

Eastlake’s Offense Smothers Inglemoor
By Steven Dion

Pop Keeney Stadium served as the site for a 4A KingCo Crest showdown between the Inglemoor Vikings and Eastlake Wolves. This was a very important game for each team which has work to do to maintain postseason aspirations. The Viks drew first blood on a 33 yard field goal by Mitchell Barker. He also netted kicks from 23, 27, and 28 yards. Eastlake found the end zone on a Troy Lewis run in the first frame. The Wolves took a 14-3 lead on a pick six in late in the first half. The scoreboard read 14-6 at intermission.

The visiting squad from Sammamish continued to score early in the second half as they added 14 points on a 16 yard pass to Mitchell Augenstein and a 49 yard strike to Jeffrey Feinglas. Eastlake’s success on offense stemmed from their ability to notch big gains on early downs from Lewis to set up manageable third downs to keep the chains moving. Inglemoor had trouble in the red zone, settling for field goals when they needed touchdowns. Viking receiver John Gardner made several spectacular catches in tight coverage. They finally got their score on a 3 yard run late into the fourth, but Lewis responded with a 36 yard scamper of his own to secure the victory. Eastlake controlled the tempo of the game from the start. However, penalties allowed the host Inglemoor squad to keep the game within two possessions until the final minute of the game.

Top Performers:
Eastlake
Troy Davis – 2 rushing TDs

Inglemoor

Edmonds-Woodway Wins Shootout with Jackson
By Steven Dion

A 4A Wesco South battle on Friday between undefeated Edmonds-Woodway (3-0) and a hungry Jackson Timberwolves team (1-2) featured a late touchdown to break the deadlock. The first of many visits to the end zone came in the first quarter on a sprint to the pylon by Warriors tailback Junior Opoku-Mensah. Jackson responded on the ensuing kickoff for the score in the hands of Nick White. The next points on the scoreboard were courtesy of White again as he rumbled through several blockers en route to the goal line. Edmonds-Woodway began to run the wildcat offense in the second quarter as their halfbacks ran the ball on almost every down. Senior running back Mac McLachlan took direct snaps and pounded through Jackson defenders for big chunks of yardage. At the half, the contest was tied at 14 apiece.

The scoring see-saw continued throughout the third quarter as both teams scored receiving touchdowns by Travante Robinson and Theo Lebesis by Jackson and E-W respectively. A missed PAT by the Timberwolves gave the Warriors a one point lead going into the final quarter. Robinson notched six more points on a run in the final quarter for the third lead change of the game. The Wolves converted the 2-point conversion to regain a 7 point advantage. However, McLachlan shifted into overdrive as he busted loose for a game-tying score. Warrior senior Antonio Sherrill blocked a punt late into the fourth which resulted in Big Mac’s third and game-winning rushing touchdown with 28 seconds remaining. Edmonds-Woodway remains unbeaten as they continue league play into October.

Federal Way Eagles Soar Over Bethel
By Steven Dion

A crisp September evening in Federal Way was the setting of a league matchup between the host Eagles and Bethel Braves. The combination of running back Chico McClatcher and quarterback Keenan Curran of the home team set the tone for their offensive onslaught. Both players found the end zone in the first quarter in addition to a Max Lautalo receiving score to build a 19-0 lead after one period of play. Federal Way’s defensive front seven kept the Bethel offense off balance for the bulk of the contest by stopping the run on early downs and forcing them into third and long situations which were defended well. As well as their third and long downs, Bethel had a handful of scoring chances in the first half foiled by penalties and turnovers. However, Braves kicker LT Bailey put the pigskin between the uprights from 45 yards out late in the second quarter for Bethel’s only points of the first half. Halftime score was 25-3 in favor of the Eagles.

The third quarter was highlighted by a 96 yard scamper by Curran which essentially sealed the victory for the home squad early in the second half. But Bethel finished strong by ending sustained drives with touchdowns by Quentin Freeman and Blake Schwartz. Braves’ stocky ball carrier Jon Concepcion ran well in the second half with big pickups through the Eagle defense, requiring multiple tacklers. When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard read 45-18 in favor of Federal Way. The two upcoming collegiate prospects in McClatcher and Curran made big plays all night long in front of the home crowd.

Kentwood Conquers Mount Rainier
By Colin Caruso

Kentwood struck early and often in their Saturday night matchup versus the Mount Rainier Rams. After the Washington Huskies pulled a 59-0 win, the Conquerors of Kentwood did their best to match their local college with a 50-0 destruction of the Mount Rainier Rams. The beginning of this game saw a punt from both teams, seemingly a well balanced matchup. But halfway through the first quarter the onslaught began, and it didn’t end until the final whistle. Senior running back Derrick Bell broke the scoreless tie with 5:57 remaining in the first quarter with a rushing touchdown, only to be followed less than three minutes later with his second rushing touchdown. Kentwood added two more scores in the first after forcing a three and out and recovering a fumble, to lead 27-0 after one quarter of play.

Mount Rainier began the second quarter with a chip on their shoulder, and senior running back Donovan Moi added a 57 yard run for the Rams all the way down to the Conqueror 8 yard line. But Kentwood held strong, and Bell again came up huge with an interception in the end zone two plays later. Kentwood would add another rushing touchdown and a safety in the second to take the lead 36-0 going into the half.

By this point, with the game largely in hand for the Conquerors, Kentwood put in their second and third string players to play the majority of the second half. They added two more touchdowns to end the punishment, winning 50-0.

West Seattle Controls the Ground Game, Beats Franklin
By Colin Caruso

West Seattle’s Raphael Jackson and his four rushing touchdowns were too much for the Franklin Quakers, who have now lost three straight contests. Both teams exchanged punts for the first quarter, but the West Seattle Wildcats started the second with a bang. A 61 yard run by Jackson led to an easy three yard TD run by Jackson as well, a solid start to his amazing day. After the teams exchanged punts, Franklin encountered a botched snap and gave away the ball on their own 12 yard line. Jackson capitalized again with a 12 yard run on the ensuing play to take the lead 14-0. Franklin needed a response and seemingly responded on the next drive with an 80 yard touchdown run by senior Marcel Boatwright. But the play was called back by an illegal block in the back and the half ended 14-0 in favor of the Wildcats.

Franklin received the kickoff in the second half, but threw an interception on their second offensive play, giving the Wildcats an opportunity to capitalize on good field position. Jackson struck again with another short TD run, his third, to take the lead 20-0. James Flowers of the Quakers answered with a 57 yard TD run on Franklin’s next possession, but just one minute later Jackson responded again. This time a 69 yard run, his longest scoring run of the day, put West Seattle ahead 26-6. Franklin would score again late in the fourth, but it was too little too late, and West Seattle won in commanding fashion, 26-12.
