The first Tuesday of the new year featured a full slate of hoops including a Metro League matchup between the high-flying Vikings of Rainier Beach and host Roosevelt. The game opened with an explosive first half by Beach which put them on pace to reach 100 points in the contest. Sam Cunliffe and Kevin Porter recorded ten and nine points respectively in the first quarter alone. Roosevelt’s Jonathan Lang countered with 9 of his team-high 19 points in the first frame. However, despite Lang’s efforts, Rainier Beach’s suffocating defense continually forced turnovers which led to fundamental buckets in transition. The margin grew wider in the second quarter when Cunliffe finished at the rim with a pair of two-handed slams. N’Keil Nelson joined the dunk show with a baseline rim rocker of his own before the break. Roosevelt would need more Dylan Jacobi threes and Lang jumpers if the Riders were hopeful in erasing the twenty point hole at halftime.
Mike Bethea evidently emphasized the defensive success in the first half because the Vikings tightened the clamps even more in the third quarter. Rainier Beach only allowed seven points in the frame and increased their lead even further. Khalil Shabazz recorded half of his dozen points in the quarter and Beach was able to cruise to a comfortable road victory despite a valiant effort shown by the Riders until the clock hit triple zeros.
The Final Score
Rainier Beach 83, Roosevelt 44.

Monday night showcased a clash of KingCo powerhouses in Bellevue and Inglemoor. The Wolverines are fresh off a first place finish in the Tournament of Championships in Arizona over the holiday break. They would put their perfect record on the line against an always tough Vikings squad. Bellevue controlled the pace early by pushing the ball up the court quickly and not allowing Inglemoor to get comfortable in their defensive sets. The Wolverines picked up a double digit lead that continued to grow through contributions by Quinessa Caylao-Do who scored 14 in the contest including an efficient 11/12 from the free throw line. Additionally, Shelby Cansler notched 11 of her team-high 18 in the first half as the versatile scorer demonstrated her range and skill under the basket. Inglemoor regrouped and put together a late run in the first half to close the gap. Kennedy Nicholas finished a tough reverse layup while drawing a foul to bring the deficit within ten and bring to single digits. Difficulty from the charity stripe troubled the Viks and Bellevue capitalized by bringing the lead back to fifteen by halftime.
The Wolverines continued to grow their lead in the third quarter as the defensive effort continued to pay dividends. The Bellevue trap forced several turnovers, many by Anna Wilson who finished with 13 points. Inglemoor seniors Mackenzie Gardner and Ifeoma Emeka solidified the Inglemoor attack by showing toughness down the stretch. Emeka finished with a team-high 13 in the contest. The fourth quarter was mostly academic as the outcome of the game was essentially decided. However, the final moments of the game featured a stamp on the contest which was a behind the back pass from Anna Wilson to Ann-Marie Jacobs. The Wolverines start 2016 by continuing their long streak in the win column.

The final game for the 21st Annual Bothell Holiday Classic featured O’Dea and the host team Bothell Cougars. This high-scoring affair opened with a 9-point first quarter by Cougar sophomore Jake Medjo who finished with 21 total and 10 first half points by Cameron Tyson who ended with a game-high 31 points. The Irish countered with sharpshooter Quin Barnard who found a rhythm from distance as the first half progressed. The senior guard recorded 13 of his 29 in the first two quarters included three from downtown. The Irish closed the first half strong and took a twelve point lead into the break.
Bothell would need to find a way to gradually chip away at the deficit if they were to hoist the hardware on their floor. By the 3:42 mark in the third quarter, the scoreboard read 46-43 in favor of O’Dea. As the clock winded down in the fourth, Bothell faced another sizable margin to overcome. This is the point when Cameron Tyson and Josh Kollman sparked a heroic comeback. The Cougs defense got the defensive stops it needed and the scoring duo capitalized on the other end. Trailing by two with five seconds remaining, O’Dea’s Barnard was at the free-throw line to shoot two. The first was nothing but net. The second shot rimmed out and Tyson grabbed the rebound. He rushed down the floor and let one go from the top of the key at the buzzer. After clanging around the rim and backboard, the shot fell and the gym burst into elation. The championship game was headed to overtime.
O’Dea coach Jason Kerr gathered his squad and told his players, “Regulation is over…you gotta start a new game for four minutes.” They responded accordingly as the Irish rattled off a dozen points in extra time. A dagger three pointer by Barnard sealed the deal. After the trophy ceremony, when asked about how winning this tournament sets up his team for league play, Kerr stated, “When they execute correctly, they can play with anybody.” Congratulations to O’Dea on their tournament victory.

The third place game in the 2015 Bothell Holiday Classic was a clash between the Shorecrest Scots and Jackson Timberwolves. The Wolves built early momentum in the contest primarilty through the sharp shooting of guard Sam Saufferer. After his first shot fell, a three-ball from beyond the tree point arc, the green light was on for the senior leader. Shorecrest found themselves facing a double digit deficit in the first frame to which Coach Brian Fischer called a timeout and brought in his big gamechanger. Sophomore center Philip Pepple made an instant impact blocking shots with ferocity and throwing down vicious slam dunks. By halftime, the Jackson lead was just four points.
When play resumed, the intensity rose as the feeling that this game would come down to the wire was increasingly evident. Jackson received a strong output by Jordan Brajcich in the third frame scoring 7 points in the quarter. Similarly, Scot guard Dagmawe Menelik continued to bury shots from downtown. Shorecrest eventually tied the game early in the fourth quarter and eventually took the lead for the first time in the contest. Trailing 66-67 with 20 seconds left on the clock, Jackson had one chance to take the lead back and win the game. Everybody in the gym knew Sam Saufferer would put the TWolves fate in his hands. He drove into the key, pump faked to draw contact, and hoisted up a tough shot. Bingo! Shorecrest had a handful of seconds remaining for a final shot, but they were denied by Jackson’s interior defense. In regards to the game winner, Coach Steve Johnson stated, “It wasn’t exactly what we drew up, but at least we had the presence of mind to have the ball with a guy who was hot to get it done.”

The first semifinal matchup on Monday Night of the Sterling Shootout matched up Timberline and Ballard. The winner would play for the tournament championship game against the victor of Peninsula and host team Kennedy which were on tap to play afterwards. The Blazers set the tone early by opening with a 12-0 run before the Beavs could record their first points. After Coach Broom called a timeout, Ballard regrouped and worked their way back into the game by closing the first quarter on a 12-5 run. Timberline built their lead back up in the second quarter Erik Stevenson and Austin Curry each notched a half-dozen in the frame.
If Ballard were to make a comeback, they would need to work quickly to cut down the lead. However, THS broke the contest wide open by scoring 25 points in the third from 6 different scorers. Ballard wasn’t able to keep pace and the Blazers cruised to a comfortable victory in which Coach Thomas distributed playing time up and down his bench. Timberline will play in the final!

The fourth game in a big slate of Sterling Shootout tournament play featured the Patriots and Cougars of Washington High School and Cascade Christian. The excitement of the previous game that extended into triple overtime continued in this game as both teams traded buckets throughout the first half of play. Tyler Fox, Jesse Howells, and Grayson Jones each scored eight points in the first two quarters, providing a balanced attack. Washington’s Alijah Maddox and Dante Willis contributed solid first half production and the score was knotted at 28 going into the break.
When play resumed, the Cougars gradually were in the process of building a lead that would extend into the final frame. A pair of buckets from downtown by Fox and Dylan Cooley helped the Cougs grab a lead that grew to eight point heading into the final minutes of play. This is when Jaomani Scott and Kaleb Whitemarsh struck as the pair of guards combined for 15 fourth quarter points which was enough to pass CC in the final seconds. A full court desperation heave by Cascade Christian hit the rim which would have sent the game to overtime, but no such luck for the Cougars.

A Monday matinee in the 2015 Sterling Shootout paired the Enumclaw Hornets and Seattle Academy Cardinals in the consolation bracket. The matchup of the Hornets size advantage from two perspectives; height and roster size against the shifty Cardinals guards was a fun battle to watch. The combination of EHS forwards Justus Rainwater, Scotty Garvin, and Josh Erickson made a significant impact early as the trio was active on the glass. Seattle Academy’s sluggish start was compounded with intentional and technical fouls which added to the Hornet lead at the charity stripe. The Cards used this to fuel a rally to close the gap before halftime in which the margin was cut to three on a triple by Ian McManus.
Marcus Austin started to fire from downtown and the sophomore guard heated up to the tune of five buckets from behind the arc in the third and fourth quarter combined. Enumclaw countered with the emergence of Kaden Anderson late in the ballgame. The sophomore combo guard recorded eight fourth quarter points as part of a team-high 24. The yo-yo game down the stretch wound up deadlocked at 51-51 with 1:23 remaining in the fourth. Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation and we headed to overtime. Marcus Austin struck again in extra time with an early bucket and one as the top Cardinal scorer gave SA early momentum. Anderson responded on the other end by racking up several points in the key. We headed to a second OT. Seattle Academy appeared to have the win in hand leading by three with mere seconds remaining. However, a made free throw by Kaden Anderson followed by a miss, rebound by Rainwater, and putback tied the score and pushed the game to a third OT! The back and forth affair continued until Scotty Garvin gave Enumclaw a final clutch bucket to take the lead in the final ticks of the game clock. Seattle Academy’s potential game-winner rimmed out and the Hornets picked up a valiant win in a highly entertaining contest.

A light slate of games on Wednesday night before Christmas Eve included an interleague clash between Thomas Jefferson from the South Puget Sound League and host West Seattle of the Metro League. The game started with an energetic, up-tempo pace as both teams established a run-and-gun scoring approach. West Seattle gained some separation when they started to heat up from the perimeter. Tyler Lenzie drained three buckets from downtown in the first half including one at the buzzer heading into the break giving the Cats a 14 point margin after two quarters. The Raiders needed a second half rally and to close quarters strong to climb back into the game; would the home team falter?
The first few minutes of the third frame were pivotal in determining the outcome of the game as Jefferson had quality chances around the basket, but couldn’t convert. Meanwhile, the Wildcats strung together a series of successful possessions that pushed the lead out of reach of the opposition. Nate Pryor recorded 10 points in the third quarter alone as part of a game-high 15 points. Coach Fazio began to incorporate his entire roster into the game and West Seattle ended with 10 scorers in the ball game. Jefferson was gassed down the stretch and could not muster a comeback. The Raiders were led by Darius Anderson’s nine points in the game and a breakaway dunk by Tarence Taylor.

Steve Dion had a chance to catch up with head coach of the Peninsula Seahawks Jake Jackson whose team has vaulted to one of the top teams in the state after recording six combined wins in the three seasons leading up to his arrival in 2012. He discusses the evolution of his senior class including JaQuori McLaughlin, Jimmy Ritchie, Josh Keough, and Austin & Garrett Kingman both on and off the court.
Coach Jackson also talks about the Seahawks Basketball Academy which he launched in 2013 that currently involves over 150 boys and girls between 3rd and 8th grade with the simple mission to “build a passion for basketball in the harbor”. Additionally, he explains what DWWD stands for which can be found on the backs of his team jerseys; a philosophy he learned during his time with the Arizona Wildcats staff.
He closes by describing the ways his student-athletes are making a positive impact in the community including the involvement with their annual kids camp at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and assistance at the Tacoma Rescue Mission. Jackson emphasizes “teaching them to have a serving mentality; giving back and serving others” as part of his coaching duty at Peninsula High School.

The primetime matchup of the 2015 Showare Shootout featured a heavyweight bout between Peninsula and Wilson. The guard matchup of Seahawk JaQuori McLaughlin and Ram David Jenkins Jr. presented itself early as the two led their teams in scoring with 21 and 28 apiece. Austin Kingman allowed the Seahawks to go into halftime with momentum as the senior forward rushed down the floor in the final moments of the second quarter to finish at the cup at the buzzer. PHS ran into the locker room energized and with a five point lead in hand. Could Wilson strike back in the second half?
The intensity heated up as the second half progressed. Jimmy Ritchie and Kingman made big contributions for the Seahawks recording 13 points apiece. Additonally, McLaughlin showed his exceptional scoring ability knocking down several acrobatic shots. Wilson countered with Emmitt Matthews Jr. who finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Jenkins helped the Rams tie the game up a 37 apiece midway through the third. Moments later, Wilson was leading and did so until 3 minutes left in the fourth when Peninsula roared back. A 25 point fourth quarter gave the Seahawks a late lead which put Wilson in desperation mode in the waning moments. Jenkins and Matthews made clutch shots to keep Wilson alive, but cold-blooded free throws by Ritchie held off a Ram miracle. Peninsula escaped with a narrow win against a top Narrows opponent.

The matching 23 point totals for Sharif Khan and Mikey Henn helped propel Bellevue to a double-digit win over Kentwood in the Showare Shootout. Early in the contest, Conqueror guard Darius Lubom helped Kentwood jump out in front. However, Bellevue countered with an extended run during the second quarter which helped the Wolverines take a narrow 3 point lead into halftime.
The Wolverines continued to score at their average rate in the third quarter, but Kentwood hit a wall. The Conks only recorded 4 points in the third quarter. As the game winded down, it was evident Kentwood was pressing a bit and the Wolverines kept their composure. Despite double figure scoring by Koby Huerta, Rayvaughan Bolton, and Lubom for Kentwood, the dynamic duo of Khan and Henn guided BHS to a win. Additionally, Bellevue sophomore Andrew Kenny nearly recorded a double double with 9 points and 10 rebounds and Cole Cirillo dished out 7 assists.
Game five of the 2015 Showare Shootout featured the West Seattle Wildcats and Chargers from nearby Kentridge. The first half was a back-and-forth affair as the lead changed on four separate occasions. KHS was slightly more efficient scoring in the first two quarter based on field goal percentag, but West Seattle took a one point lead into the locker room. Which team would make the necessary plays down the stretch to pick up a quality non-league win?
West Seattle rolled out a 21-0 run most of which took place in the third frame as steals on the defensive end led to several buckets in transition. The Wildcats recorded 27 points off turovers, nearly half of their entire offensive output. Trailing by a dozen with 1:20 remaining in the third quarter, Kentridge needed to regroup. However, the Wildcats kept the pedal down and limited the Chargers to two points in the third frame. Grace Sarver led all scorers with 15 points and her teammate Lydia Giomi adding 14 of her own for WSHS. Morgan Gary led the Chargers with 13 points, but the huge Wildcat third quarter was enough to stave off a late comeback and allowed West Seattle to cruise to a comfortable victory.

The Tornados had difficulty contending with the full court press of the opposition and ended up turning the ball over 20 times in the ball game. Leading 40-13 at halftime, could the Viks retain their big lead?
Christian Davis took the lead for Yelm in the second half as the senior guard scored the bulk of his 30 points in the final two quarters including 17/22 from the free throw line. After four games of the 2015-16 season, the Olympia Bears have equaled their win total from a year ago. On Friday night, the Coach John Kiley led squad from Washington’s capital travelled north to take on the Tigers from the scenic campus of Stadium High School. Olympia jumped out to a lightning quick start as Hunter Sipe recorded a lay-up four seconds into the game. This was the catalyst for a 16-1 run to start the game. When the Tigers knocked down their first field goal, they were facing a sizable deficit. Oly was also strong on the defensive end of the floor in which they drew three first-half charges and built a large rebounding advantage which finished 37-18. In his postgame remarks Kiley stated, “I felt it was one of our best halves of basketball.” Could the Bears stave off the Tigers in the final two quarters with a big lead?
Stadium emerged from the locker room with a renewed sense of energy by gradually cutting into the deficit. The increased defensive intensity including blocks by Jaz Howard and steals by Dieauka Bradley set up transition buckets on the other end. Kiley said, “To Stadium’s credit, they were out-working us in the second half.” However, the Bears righted the ship in the final quarter and both teams scored 18 apiece in the fourth and the coaching staff was pleased with their ability to close out. In regards to the 4-0 start, Kiley praised his seniors by replying, “Eddie Beusch and Liam Murphy put so much time in this fall as leaders in the weight room…they really want to see a great basketball season and a legacy develop for them.” The Bears will get that opportunity when they take off to Florida for a holiday tournament soon.
