Paul B. Hanawalt Pavilion (Puyallup HS) 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Rogers 10 17 15 15 57
Puyallup 16 15 22 15 68

Thursday night basketball might not be as much fun as Friday, but rivalry basketball on any night is fun. The Rogers Rams coming off a 53-50 loss at Spanaway Lake who were vying with Puyallup for the 2nd spot in the SPSL South felt like they could head into the valley and get a win at Puyallup High School. The Vikings conversely were coming off a tough road win 48-43 over the other rival from up on the hill, Emerald Ridge. The Vikings were happy to be back in the friendly confines of Paul B. Hanawalt Pavilion, in the new year. Braden Hannold knocked down a high arcing 3 to get the Rams going, the Vikings were able to answer and put up 16 points, Tony Gutierrez contributing 8, matching the two 3’s by Hannold who had 6 of the Rams 10 points. As the Vikings heated up from outside hitting 3 more 3’s for 7 total in the first half, the Rams 6-5 senior post Daniel O’Brien worked inside for 12 points to lead his team and all scorers into the half with the Vikings up 31-27 as Jaden Vollmen was able to convert a lay in before the buzzer to give his team the 4 point lead.

In the 3rd, the Rams hit the bonus first going 7-11 from the line, Braden Hannold hitting 4-5 and added a high flying tip back to score 6 in the quarter. With just 15.4 seconds remaining on the clock Hannold with a strong move to the hoop was met by Jaden Vollmen at the pinnacle and came down hard to the floor, Vollmen was called for a foul, but Hannold was unable to take the free throws. He was helped off the floor and would return for a short stint in the 4th and would finish with the 15 already in the book. The Vikings 3rd quarter was highlighted by the tandem of Vollmen and team leading scorer Deven Neff who each scored 8, Neff would finish with 17. Vollmen going 4-4 from the line would finish with 14, along with Jacob Holcomb’s 3rd 3, Puyallup built on their halftime lead of 4 to stretch it to 11, at 53-42. Both teams kept up the pace and the pressure as Konnor Bandley of the Rams knocked down a couple of 3’s and went 2-2 from the line for 8 of his 16 points and Daniel O’Brien added 5 to his 12 point 2nd quarter to lead Rogers with 17 total. Tony Gutierrez after taking a fall in the 3rd found his range from 3 point land and carried the Vikings 4th quarter hitting 4 of his 6 3’s to finish with a game high 20 on the night. Puyallup and Rogers each with 15 in the 4th quarter ended with the Vikings up, The Final Score 68-57. Puyallup maintains their hold on 2 place in the SPSL South at 5-1 over 4-2 Emerald Ridge. Next up for Puyallup, Saturday night basketball at home vs Spanaway Lake with both teams coming off wins over the Rams.

Saturday- December 19th 2015 Boys 4A SPSL/Narrows
Showare Center 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Yelm 5 8 15 26 54
Puyallup 21 19 17 20 77

Puyallup sophomore Landen Neff

All eleven Puyallup Vikings scored in their Showare Shootout victory over Yelm. Deven Neff led the Viks with 15 points in addition to 5 rebounds. By the time Yelm scored their first points in the contest with 1:38 remaining in the first quarter, they were facing a 16 point deficit. The Tornados had difficulty contending with the full court press of the opposition and ended up turning the ball over 20 times in the ball game. Leading 40-13 at halftime, could the Viks retain their big lead?

Christian Davis took the lead for Yelm in the second half as the senior guard scored the bulk of his 30 points in the final two quarters including 17/22 from the free throw line. He also recorded 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and 4 blocks. However, this wasn’t enough to cut into Puyallup’s advantage as Jacob Holcomb and Tony Gutierrez joined Neff as double digit scorers. A 21-3 Viking run and decisive rebounding advantage allowed the SPSL representative to go wire-to-wire in this game and get back into the win column after a close loss to Curtis earlier in the week.

The Final Score
Puyallup 77, Yelm 54
