Jackson 26 9 11 22 68

Jackson senior Sam Saufferer

The third place game in the 2015 Bothell Holiday Classic was a clash between the Shorecrest Scots and Jackson Timberwolves. The Wolves built early momentum in the contest primarilty through the sharp shooting of guard Sam Saufferer. After his first shot fell, a three-ball from beyond the tree point arc, the green light was on for the senior leader. Shorecrest found themselves facing a double digit deficit in the first frame to which Coach Brian Fischer called a timeout and brought in his big gamechanger. Sophomore center Philip Pepple made an instant impact blocking shots with ferocity and throwing down vicious slam dunks. By halftime, the Jackson lead was just four points.

When play resumed, the intensity rose as the feeling that this game would come down to the wire was increasingly evident. Jackson received a strong output by Jordan Brajcich in the third frame scoring 7 points in the quarter. Similarly, Scot guard Dagmawe Menelik continued to bury shots from downtown. Shorecrest eventually tied the game early in the fourth quarter and eventually took the lead for the first time in the contest. Trailing 66-67 with 20 seconds left on the clock, Jackson had one chance to take the lead back and win the game. Everybody in the gym knew Sam Saufferer would put the TWolves fate in his hands. He drove into the key, pump faked to draw contact, and hoisted up a tough shot. Bingo! Shorecrest had a handful of seconds remaining for a final shot, but they were denied by Jackson’s interior defense. In regards to the game winner, Coach Steve Johnson stated, “It wasn’t exactly what we drew up, but at least we had the presence of mind to have the ball with a guy who was hot to get it done.”

The Final Score
Jackson 68, Shorecrest 67.

Timberline sophomore Eli Morton

The first semifinal matchup on Monday Night of the Sterling Shootout matched up Timberline and Ballard. The winner would play for the tournament championship game against the victor of Peninsula and host team Kennedy which were on tap to play afterwards. The Blazers set the tone early by opening with a 12-0 run before the Beavs could record their first points. After Coach Broom called a timeout, Ballard regrouped and worked their way back into the game by closing the first quarter on a 12-5 run. Timberline built their lead back up in the second quarter Erik Stevenson and Austin Curry each notched a half-dozen in the frame.

If Ballard were to make a comeback, they would need to work quickly to cut down the lead. However, THS broke the contest wide open by scoring 25 points in the third from 6 different scorers. Ballard wasn’t able to keep pace and the Blazers cruised to a comfortable victory in which Coach Thomas distributed playing time up and down his bench. Timberline will play in the final!

Washington junior Alijah Maddox

The fourth game in a big slate of Sterling Shootout tournament play featured the Patriots and Cougars of Washington High School and Cascade Christian. The excitement of the previous game that extended into triple overtime continued in this game as both teams traded buckets throughout the first half of play. Tyler Fox, Jesse Howells, and Grayson Jones each scored eight points in the first two quarters, providing a balanced attack. Washington’s Alijah Maddox and Dante Willis contributed solid first half production and the score was knotted at 28 going into the break.

When play resumed, the Cougars gradually were in the process of building a lead that would extend into the final frame. A pair of buckets from downtown by Fox and Dylan Cooley helped the Cougs grab a lead that grew to eight point heading into the final minutes of play. This is when Jaomani Scott and Kaleb Whitemarsh struck as the pair of guards combined for 15 fourth quarter points which was enough to pass CC in the final seconds. A full court desperation heave by Cascade Christian hit the rim which would have sent the game to overtime, but no such luck for the Cougars.

Enumclaw senior Scotty Garvin

A Monday matinee in the 2015 Sterling Shootout paired the Enumclaw Hornets and Seattle Academy Cardinals in the consolation bracket. The matchup of the Hornets size advantage from two perspectives; height and roster size against the shifty Cardinals guards was a fun battle to watch. The combination of EHS forwards Justus Rainwater, Scotty Garvin, and Josh Erickson made a significant impact early as the trio was active on the glass. Seattle Academy’s sluggish start was compounded with intentional and technical fouls which added to the Hornet lead at the charity stripe. The Cards used this to fuel a rally to close the gap before halftime in which the margin was cut to three on a triple by Ian McManus.

Marcus Austin started to fire from downtown and the sophomore guard heated up to the tune of five buckets from behind the arc in the third and fourth quarter combined. Enumclaw countered with the emergence of Kaden Anderson late in the ballgame. The sophomore combo guard recorded eight fourth quarter points as part of a team-high 24. The yo-yo game down the stretch wound up deadlocked at 51-51 with 1:23 remaining in the fourth. Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation and we headed to overtime. Marcus Austin struck again in extra time with an early bucket and one as the top Cardinal scorer gave SA early momentum. Anderson responded on the other end by racking up several points in the key. We headed to a second OT. Seattle Academy appeared to have the win in hand leading by three with mere seconds remaining. However, a made free throw by Kaden Anderson followed by a miss, rebound by Rainwater, and putback tied the score and pushed the game to a third OT! The back and forth affair continued until Scotty Garvin gave Enumclaw a final clutch bucket to take the lead in the final ticks of the game clock. Seattle Academy’s potential game-winner rimmed out and the Hornets picked up a valiant win in a highly entertaining contest.

West Seattle 21 15 21 12 69

West Seattle junior Yusuf Mohamed

A light slate of games on Wednesday night before Christmas Eve included an interleague clash between Thomas Jefferson from the South Puget Sound League and host West Seattle of the Metro League. The game started with an energetic, up-tempo pace as both teams established a run-and-gun scoring approach. West Seattle gained some separation when they started to heat up from the perimeter. Tyler Lenzie drained three buckets from downtown in the first half including one at the buzzer heading into the break giving the Cats a 14 point margin after two quarters. The Raiders needed a second half rally and to close quarters strong to climb back into the game; would the home team falter?

The first few minutes of the third frame were pivotal in determining the outcome of the game as Jefferson had quality chances around the basket, but couldn’t convert. Meanwhile, the Wildcats strung together a series of successful possessions that pushed the lead out of reach of the opposition. Nate Pryor recorded 10 points in the third quarter alone as part of a game-high 15 points. Coach Fazio began to incorporate his entire roster into the game and West Seattle ended with 10 scorers in the ball game. Jefferson was gassed down the stretch and could not muster a comeback. The Raiders were led by Darius Anderson’s nine points in the game and a breakaway dunk by Tarence Taylor.

Peninsula – Boys Head Coach
Jake Jackson

Steve Dion had a chance to catch up with head coach of the Peninsula Seahawks Jake Jackson whose team has vaulted to one of the top teams in the state after recording six combined wins in the three seasons leading up to his arrival in 2012. Coach Jackson also talks about the Seahawks Basketball Academy which he launched in 2013 that currently involves over 150 boys and girls between 3rd and 8th grade with the simple mission to “build a passion for basketball in the harbor”. Additionally, he explains what DWWD stands for which can be found on the backs of his team jerseys; a philosophy he learned during his time with the Arizona Wildcats staff.

He closes by describing the ways his student-athletes are making a positive impact in the community including the involvement with their annual kids camp at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and assistance at the Tacoma Rescue Mission. Peninsula 16 12 10 25 63

Peninsula senior JaQuori McLaughlin

The primetime matchup of the 2015 Showare Shootout featured a heavyweight bout between Peninsula and Wilson. The guard matchup of Seahawk JaQuori McLaughlin and Ram David Jenkins Jr. presented itself early as the two led their teams in scoring with 21 and 28 apiece. Austin Kingman allowed the Seahawks to go into halftime with momentum as the senior forward rushed down the floor in the final moments of the second quarter to finish at the cup at the buzzer. PHS ran into the locker room energized and with a five point lead in hand. Could Wilson strike back in the second half?

The intensity heated up as the second half progressed. Jimmy Ritchie and Kingman made big contributions for the Seahawks recording 13 points apiece. Additonally, McLaughlin showed his exceptional scoring ability knocking down several acrobatic shots. Wilson countered with Emmitt Matthews Jr. who finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Jenkins helped the Rams tie the game up a 37 apiece midway through the third. Moments later, Wilson was leading and did so until 3 minutes left in the fourth when Peninsula roared back. A 25 point fourth quarter gave the Seahawks a late lead which put Wilson in desperation mode in the waning moments. Jenkins and Matthews made clutch shots to keep Wilson alive, but cold-blooded free throws by Ritchie held off a Ram miracle. Peninsula escaped with a narrow win against a top Narrows opponent.

Bellevue senior Mikey Henn

The matching 23 point totals for Sharif Khan and Mikey Henn helped propel Bellevue to a double-digit win over Kentwood in the Showare Shootout. Early in the contest, Conqueror guard Darius Lubom helped Kentwood jump out in front. However, Bellevue countered with an extended run during the second quarter which helped the Wolverines take a narrow 3 point lead into halftime.

The Wolverines continued to score at their average rate in the third quarter, but Kentwood hit a wall. The Conks only recorded 4 points in the third quarter. As the game winded down, it was evident Kentwood was pressing a bit and the Wolverines kept their composure. Despite double figure scoring by Koby Huerta, Rayvaughan Bolton, and Lubom for Kentwood, the dynamic duo of Khan and Henn guided BHS to a win. Additionally, Bellevue sophomore Andrew Kenny nearly recorded a double double with 9 points and 10 rebounds and Cole Cirillo dished out 7 assists.

West Seattle 12 12 15 17 56

West Seattle senior Lydia Giomi

Game five of the 2015 Showare Shootout featured the West Seattle Wildcats and Chargers from nearby Kentridge. The first half was a back-and-forth affair as the lead changed on four separate occasions. KHS was slightly more efficient scoring in the first two quarter based on field goal percentag, but West Seattle took a one point lead into the locker room. Which team would make the necessary plays down the stretch to pick up a quality non-league win?

West Seattle rolled out a 21-0 run most of which took place in the third frame as steals on the defensive end led to several buckets in transition. The Wildcats recorded 27 points off turovers, nearly half of their entire offensive output. Trailing by a dozen with 1:20 remaining in the third quarter, Kentridge needed to regroup. However, the Wildcats kept the pedal down and limited the Chargers to two points in the third frame. Grace Sarver led all scorers with 15 points and her teammate Lydia Giomi adding 14 of her own for WSHS. Morgan Gary led the Chargers with 13 points, but the huge Wildcat third quarter was enough to stave off a late comeback and allowed West Seattle to cruise to a comfortable victory.

Puyallup sophomore Landen Neff

All eleven Puyallup Vikings scored in their Showare Shootout victory over Yelm. Deven Neff led the Viks with 15 points in addition to 5 rebounds. By the time Yelm scored their first points in the contest with 1:38 remaining in the first quarter, they were facing a 16 point deficit. The Tornados had difficulty contending with the full court press of the opposition and ended up turning the ball over 20 times in the ball game. Leading 40-13 at halftime, could the Viks retain their big lead?

Christian Davis took the lead for Yelm in the second half as the senior guard scored the bulk of his 30 points in the final two quarters including 17/22 from the free throw line. He also recorded 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and 4 blocks. However, this wasn’t enough to cut into Puyallup’s advantage as Jacob Holcomb and Tony Gutierrez joined Neff as double digit scorers. A 21-3 Viking run and decisive rebounding advantage allowed the SPSL representative to go wire-to-wire in this game and get back into the win column after a close loss to Curtis earlier in the week.

The Final Score

Olympia senior Liam Murphy

After four games of the 2015-16 season, the Olympia Bears have equaled their win total from a year ago. On Friday night, the Coach John Kiley led squad from Washington’s capital travelled north to take on the Tigers from the scenic campus of Stadium High School. Olympia jumped out to a lightning quick start as Hunter Sipe recorded a lay-up four seconds into the game. This was the catalyst for a 16-1 run to start the game. When the Tigers knocked down their first field goal, they were facing a sizable deficit. Oly was also strong on the defensive end of the floor in which they drew three first-half charges and built a large rebounding advantage which finished 37-18. In his postgame remarks Kiley stated, “I felt it was one of our best halves of basketball.” Could the Bears stave off the Tigers in the final two quarters with a big lead?

Stadium emerged from the locker room with a renewed sense of energy by gradually cutting into the deficit. The increased defensive intensity including blocks by Jaz Howard and steals by Dieauka Bradley set up transition buckets on the other end. Kiley said, “To Stadium’s credit, they were out-working us in the second half.” However, the Bears righted the ship in the final quarter and both teams scored 18 apiece in the fourth and the coaching staff was pleased with their ability to close out. In regards to the 4-0 start, Kiley praised his seniors by replying, “Eddie Beusch and Liam Murphy put so much time in this fall as leaders in the weight room…they really want to see a great basketball season and a legacy develop for them.” The Bears will get that opportunity when they take off to Florida for a holiday tournament soon.

Garfield’s Tempo Too Much for Young Panthers

Garfield’s Tempo Too Much for Young Panthers
By Steve Dion

Tuesday- December 15th 2015 Boys 3A Metro
Seattle Prep High School 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Seattle Prep 11 19 12 25 67
Garfield 20 25 21 23 89

Garfield junior Jaylen Nowell

Terrell Brown led the top ranked Garfield Bulldogs with 23 points in their victory over Seattle Prep on Tuesday night. Ed Haskins’ defending state champs were victorious by a comfortable 22 point margin, but Steve Kelly’s young Panthers squad showed they can compete with the state’s best in this one. The first half was very physical and thus many key players from both sides received fouls that tested the depth of both rosters. Garfield had early success when they applied the full court press, especially with Prep’s floor general Aaron Nettles on the sidelines. The front court battle of Garfield’s Alphonso Anderson and J’Raan Brooks against SP’s Collin Welp and Nic Lynch was exciting as both duos were integral scoring combos for both teams early. The forwards combined for 14 and 13 in the first two quarters respectively. At the break, Brown’s five field goals helped the Bulldogs earn a 45-30 lead.

Needing to chip away the GHS lead to give themselves a chance in the fourth quarter, Seattle Prep needed to start the second half strong. However, the opposite occurred. Garfield extended the lead to 21 points early in the third as they were able to play at a high tempo and score on the fast break. Jaylen Nowell put a stamp on the game when he threw down a pair of dunks as part of his 14. Prep’s lack of consistent shot-takers dashed their ability to keep pace with the high-flying Bulldogs. The Panthers put together a strong final quarter even though Garfield’s big lead was not in jeopardy. The home team earned 20 trips to the free throw line in which 13 were made. Coach Haskins was able to distribute minutes up and down his roster in the fourth quarter to close out the ballgame. Double digit scorers for the Bulldogs included Daejon Davis, Brown, Nowell, and Brooks. Seattle Prep’s Nettles, Welp, and Lynch scored in double figures.

The Final Score
Garfield 89, Seattle Prep 67

At high noon in the Highline College Gym on Saturday, Vashon Island and Tahoma tipped off for game three of the Sports Authority Shootout. The Pirates jumped out to a commanding lead early by starting the game on a 17-0 run. The Bears could not get any shots to fall and their woes were compounded when their 6’9 post Clayton Stultz recorded his second foul in the first 90 seconds of the game. Once Tahoma finally found the scoreboard, they strung together a 12-0 run to find themselves back within striking distance. After two quarters of play, the Vashon Island led by a half-dozen.

THS started the second half the way they began the game by going on an extended cold streak. The Pirates outscored their opponents 11-2 in the third quarter. VI senior Alex Symbol-Godfrey led all scorers with 18 points in addition to his 10 boards. Sam Yates also scored in double figures with 15. Heading into the fourth quarter trailing 15 the Bears needed a big run to climb back into the game. They responded by outscoring the Pirates 21-11 in the final frame when Connor Thomas and Kimball Cottam heated up. The pair combined for 20 points total, many of which were scored in the final minutes of the game. Despite the game slowing down in the latter moments, VI had a big enough edge to prevent the Bears from climbing the mountain.

Patrick Kennedy recorded a double-double for Todd Beamer in their win over the Kennedy Catholic Lancers. The senior wing scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Titans led nearly the entire contest. Beamer opened the game on a 7-0 run the first 90 seconds to which Kennedy called a timeout to gain their composure. KCHS rallied in the second quarter to cut the TB lead to 8 points at the break by getting into the bonus early in the second quarter and knocking down freebies from the charity stripe. Amari McClemore demonstrated his athleticism when the 6’0 wing followed a missed shot with a putback slam.

The Titans held their largest lead in the fourth quarter of 19 points, but Kennedy closed on a 9-0 run to end the game with a 10 point deficit. James Jolly from the Lancers led all scorers with 15 points. The game was in the balance early in the fourth quarter, but Gio Jackson put the game on ice with a 6-0 run of his own to put Beamer over the top. Lake Washington Sophomore Abi Kameric

The nightcap of Friday night hoops at Sammamish High School featured the host Totems and the Lake Washington Kangaroos. The Kangs jumped out to an early lead primarily due to Sahil Basra’s three buckets from downtown. If not for a Justin Jordan hustle play to throw up a fadeaway from a miss at the first-quarter buzzer, the Totems would have lacked any sense of momentum moving forward. LWHS continued to roll in the second frame when Abi Kameric matched Basra by knocking down a trio of triples of his own. Additionally, the Kangs rebounded well and did not allow for multiple chances for the Totems. At the break Lake Washington led 42-17.

Sammamish was able to outmatch their first half total in the third quarter alone by logging eighteen points in the quarter, but LW kept the pedal down and continued to extend their lead. There was a sequence in transition for the Kangs where a lead pass in transition to Sam Linsky was dished behind the back for an open bucket. Sammamish closed strong by putting together a series of possessions where they came up with two quick steals following an initial bucket by Nate Aebi for three field goals in a very short period of time. However, the Kangs led wire to wire and cruised to a double digit victory on the road.

The Kangs frontcourt combination of Hanna Brender & Georgia Romine-Black helped LW jump out to a 34-17 lead after the first half. Totem coach Mike Schick made second adjustments that allowed Sammamish to cut down the Kang lead as the game progressed, but the contributions of Aleyah Bennett and Alliyah Shinaul were not quite enough to bring the home team within striking distance of their KingCo opponent.

The difference maker in this game was Lake Washington’s ability to dial up from long distance early and grab offensive rebounds for second chance put-backs to create enough separation by halftime that a late Sammamish run would not jeopardize their lead. Credit the Totems for winning the second-half scoring margin, but they will need balance for four quarters as league play heats up.

The Final Score
Lake Washington 49, Sammamish 37

The Rough Riders tipped off their 2015-2016 season with two road games against West Seattle and Bainbridge in which they earned a split. Wednesday night marked their home opener against Mountlake Terrace who was holding a 3-0 record heading into the contest. Metro against Wesco: which team would earn an early quality non-conference win?

The first half presented a back-and-forth affair with the lead changing frequently. Mountlake Terrace used their size advantage to clean up on the offensive glass leading to putbacks. As the second quarter progressed, the Hawks hit a cold streak and were limited to only five points in the quarter. Their attempts from three point range were not falling and they had difficulty finishing at the cup. Meanwhile, Johnny Lang sparked a Roosevelt run to start the second frame. The 6’5 senior recorded eight points in the quarter as part of his game high 30 points. The Riders held a 21-12 with 4:21 remaining in the first half and Terrace called a timeout. This felt like a pivotal point of the contest heading into the break to prevent a double digit deficit. The Hawks were able to tread water heading into halftime trailing by eight. They had work to do in the final two quarters.

Coach Sood was able to rally the troops and put together a massive third quarter. Eight of the nine active players contributed to their 23 points during that stretch. At the same time, RHS appeared timid and made mental mistakes that turned the ball over. Lang knocked down a pair of three pointers to keep the Riders offensive pulse going during the Terrace run. The game was on a crash-course to an exciting finish.

The Hawks trailed by four with thirty seconds remaining in hurry-up mode. Brock Davis drove to the cup on the baseline for a bucket and was off the mark. Fortunately, Derek Anyimah had great post position and was able to come up with the rebound and putback. Roosevelt was fouled on the other end and Nate Suedel missed both free throws giving the Hawks a glimmer of hope. Terrace drove down the court and Davis fired up a three to take the lead. The miss caromed out of bounds with less than a second remaining. Roosevelt simply needed to inbound the ball to run out the clock. The entry pass was intercepted by Joey Gardner who hoisted up desperation three. Good if it goes…off the front of the rim. Ballgame. The Roosevelt bench breathed a huge sigh of relief as they narrowly avoided a late collapse. In the end, the Riders earn a check mark under the win column.

Gonzaga Prep Captures 4A Crown in Convincing Fashion
By Steve Dion

In a classic battle of east against west, the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups traveled 300 miles over the mountains to take on the Skyline Spartans from the Sammamish Plateau. Sparty was fresh off a shootout at the Tacoma Dome a week ago against Lake Stevens which tested them from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. They busted through the gauntlet that was the bottom half of the 4A bracket taking down Gig Harbor, Camas, and the Vikings. The Bullpups used their staunch defense and efficient offensive attack to navigate to the title game including a grinder in the Tri Cities during semifinal week against the Richland Bombers. A packed Woodshed was set to close out a fantastic Gridiron Classic.

The first few minutes featured a pair of turnovers when an early Bullpup drive ended with a fumble into the Spartan endzone; a big momentum swing that erased what was nearly a quick 7-0 lead. However, the second play from scrimmage following the fumble was picked off by the Pups giving them the ball back in good field position. Later in the first, GPrep struck when Coach McKenna’s trickery caught the Spartans off guard, a double reverse to Devin Culp who glide to the goal line. On the ensuing kickoff, Conor McKenna knocked the ball loose from the Skyline kick returner to give his team the ball back in great scoring position. They walked away with three points off the foot of Jared Kutsch. Skyline’s enemic offense continued throughout the first half as they were limited to 102 total yards; the Bullpups had 358 in the same time frame. Before the teams entered halftime, Culp busted loose for a 59 yard rumble to the endzone. Also, the big running back/defensive end combo Evan Weaver capped off a late Bullpup drive to punch it in from a yard out. Many knew Gonzaga Prep had a tough defense, but limiting Skyline to three points in the first two quarters drove that point home on the biggest stage.

Trailing by three touchdowns entering the second half, Mat Taylor needed to rally the troops and craft a gameplan to score quickly before a comeback was out of reach. After failing to move the ball into Bullpup territory on their first drive, SHS caught a break by forcing a fumble after they punted. Unfortunately, they turned it right back over on the next play. The ball must have been covered in butter because Skyline forced another turnover two plays later. In 45 second and five plays, there were 3 fumbles! The Spartans took advantage of their gift by setting up Jake Pendergrast for a quick slant route for a touchdown. The Spartans were very much alive!

In a series that put a stamp on the contest, Gonzaga Prep drove down the field on a 15 play, 80 yard drive that culminated in a Weaver touchdown to put the Pups up 31-9. Skyline would find paydirt only one more time in the game; a fantastic one-handed grab by Danny Sinatro (see highlight video above). However, this was not enough to overcome the massive lead the Bullpups built early on. When the dust settled, GPHS outrushed their counterpart by 500 yards! Additionally, they dominated the time of possession game by controlling the ball over twice as long as Skyline. A stellar defensive effort by Gonzaga Prep neutralized Skyline’s running attack to only 22 yards. In his postgame comments, Coach McKenna said, “We faced adversity all year long, so when we had to travel over here against a great Skyline team, our kids came out firing.” The 4A crown will head east for until the first week of December in 2016!
