Bothell Rolls Past Grizzlies on Opening Night
By Steve Dion

A drizzly night at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell featured a 4A clash between Glacier Peak and host Bothell. This game had a college football feel in its heavy reliance on a passing attack leading to a high scoring affair that lasted well over three hours.

Glacier Peak struck first when Ayden Ziomas connected with Colton Bunt for a 65 yard score. Bothell quarterback Jacob Sirmon showed his tremendous arm strength on the following drive by launching a 58 yard bomb to Daniel Johnson off his back foot while taking a big hit from a Grizzlies linebacker at the point of release.

This set the tone for a back and forth affair leading to a 27-17 halftime score in favor of the home Cougars.

Bothell took a stranglehold on the game when Sirmon found Johnson again early in the third, this time for 75 yards. Peak scored shortly after on a Billy Lutali scamper up the gut, but the double digit deficit was too much to overcome.

The Final Score:
Bothell 44, Glacier Peak 29.

Top Performer

Bothell
Jacob Sirmon-4 passing TDs (19, 30, 58, 75)

Glacier Peak
Seiver Southard-2 receiving TDs (7, 41)

Final 4A Girls Power Rankings

theFinalScore.TV
Final 4A Girls Power Rankings
By Steve Dion

With the 2015-2016 season in the books, here are the final top ten rankings for the 4A Girls classification!

1) Central Valley (28-0):
It is scary to think how good this team will be the next two seasons after a 28-0 record and a championship trophy with a team primarily composed of freshmen and sophomores.

2) Snohomish (22-4):
After starting 0-3, the Panthers rattled off 22 straight wins to propel themselves to the title game as the best representative to challenge the Bears.

3) Moses Lake (25-1):
It’s a shame the Chiefs met eventual 4A champ Central Valley in the quarterfinals riding an undefeated record. However, a fourth place finish in the state is nothing to be disappointed with.

4) Bothell (24-3):
The Cougs’ consistency earned them a trip to the final four and a strong sense of optimism heading into next season.

5) Todd Beamer (25-3):
The Titans did a remarkable job to retool after losing key pieces from the previous season to play basketball in March.

6) Lewis & Clark (18-7):
The battle-tested Tigers held their own in a loaded GSHL and were one of a small group to take Central Valley to the wire.

7) Skyview (20-6):
Perennial GSHL powerhouse added to their run of quality seasons falling just shy of 20 wins; a clear indication of their top ten recognition.

8) Kentlake (21-7):
The sharpshooting Falcons posting a 21-7 record was validated by a trip to Tacoma with a handful of gutsy wins the ticket to get them there.

9) Bellarmine Prep (17-8):
The thrill of advancing to the sweet sixteen was met with a tough departure in the regional round. A league title and a deep playoff run earn the Lions the ninth spot.

10) Chiawana (21-3):
The Riverhawks are worthy of including in the top ten in 4A given their ability to make the best teams in the classification earn everything against them.

Final 3A Boys Power Rankings

Final 4A Boys Power Rankings
By Steve Dion

With the 2015-2016 season in the books, here are the final top ten rankings for the 3A Boys classification!

1) Rainier Beach (21-4):
Mike Bethea is running out of ring fingers as Head Coach of the Beach Boys captures another state title in a season loaded with quality 3A teams.

2) Garfield (24-3):
Convinced the Bulldogs would have played in the championship game if not placed in the same side of the bracket as Rainier Beach.

3) O’Dea (21-9):
The Irish take the third spot based on the convincing matchups against the Bulldogs in the regular season. Handing Beach a loss in the opening round of the playoffs was impressive.

4) Kennedy Catholic (18-11):
Despite the record, the Lancers found a groove late in the season to propel themselves to the 3A semifinal against O’Dea in a strong finish to the season.

5) Bellevue (25-3):
A shocking end to a fantastic season leaves some curiosity of what the Wolverines could’ve done in the Hardwood Classic if played again.

6) Cleveland (22-7):
Coach Petty deserves a ton of credit for arguably the biggest turnaround in the state by making the Eagles a formidable force to the best the state has to offer.

7) Lincoln (21-5):
Narrows champs completed another year as the class of the 253 finishing down the street at the TDome.

8) Auburn-Mountainview (23-2):
Claiming the league title from unquestioned favorite Peninsula was a huge accomplishment; The Lions unfortunately fell short of a trip to Tacoma.

9) Wilson (18-7):
A team worthy of playing in the comfy confines of the Tacoma Dome drew Garfield in the regional round who ended the solid Rams season.

10) Peninsula (21-4):
Purdy has plenty to be proud of as Coach Jackson’s first full class of Seahawks completed a strong senior season led by Mr. Basketball JaQuori McLaughlin.

Federal Way Wins Back-To-Back 4A Titles

Federal Way Wins Back-To-Back 4A Titles
By Colin Caruso

Saturday- March 5th 2016 Boys 4A Championship
Tacoma Dome 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Kentwood 17 12 6 19 54
Federal Way 16 9 17 24 66

4A Champions – Federal Way Eagles

There is no better place to watch high school basketball in Washington state than the Tacoma Dome for state final action. In a matchup of two SPSL teams, the Kentwood Conquerors were looking to end Federal Way’s 42 game winning streak and bid for two consecutive state titles.

Kentwood came out of the gates playing sound basketball, cleaning up the defensive glass and playing excellent defense. They lost their previous two matchups against the Eagles of Federal Way, and they weren’t going to let this game go easily. A 29-25 halftime lead for the Conquerors provided a great boost to their fans for the final 16 minutes of action.

Jerome Collins, the head coach for the Eagles, gave his team a defensive focused talk at the half and it showed through the duration of the 3rd quarter. A 29-25 Conqueror lead turned into a 42-35 Eagle lead going into the fourth. The six point quarter for the Conquerors was their lowest of the tournament. On the offensive side, the Eagles were able to get out in transition and finish a number of uncontested layups.

With a seven point lead going into the fourth and all the momentum, the game was seemingly in the Eagles hands for another title. But Kentwood would not give up so easily. The lead was trimmed to as little as 3 early in the fourth, with the Conquerors battling possession by possession. But in the end, the combination of Ferron Flavors, Christian Jones, and Jalen McDaniels proved too tough for the Conquerors to surmount. Congratulations to the Federal Way Eagles for their 43rd consecutive win and back to back state titles!

The Final Score
Federal Way 66, Kentwood 54.

Top Performers:

Federal Way
Ferron Flavors- 20 points
Christian Jones- 18 points, 12 rebounds

Kentwood
Rayvaughn Bolton- 18 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists

Central Valley Goes Undefeated, Wins 4A Title

Central Valley Goes Undefeated, Wins 4A Title
By Colin Caruso

Saturday- March 5th 2016 Girls 4A Championship
Tacoma Dome 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Snohomish 9 8 13 18 48
Central Valley 12 10 13 22 57

4A Champions – Central Valley Bears

In a battle of two teams on incredible winning streaks, the Central Valley Bears took on the Snohomish Panthers for the 4A girls state championship. The Bears came into this game a perfect 28-0, and the Panthers, after losing their first three games, were riding a 23 game winning streak into this finals matchup.

Snohomish started the game in an interesting defensive matchup, with their tallest starter, Madeline Smith, guarding the Central Valley PG Mady Simmelink. Smith rarely left the key on the defensive side, giving Simmelink wide open looks. She capitalized with 5 first quarter points and Central Valley took a 12-9 lead into the second quarter.

The undefeated Bears began to pull away in the second, extending their lead to 11 and picking up their defensive intensity. But Snohomish would not quit; they are older and bigger than the Bears and they used their size to convert a few layups down the stretch before half. Central Valley took a 5 point lead into the locker room.

Madeline Smith for the Panthers began to take over after the half. She went on a personal 10-0 run, and halfway through the quarter she had 25 of her teams 30 points. The underdog Panthers tied the game later in the frame, looking to take their first lead since early in the first. But Lexie Hull responded for Central Valley, adding in a couple of short layups for her team leading 13 points. Even with Madeline Smith’s dominate performance, the lead remained 5 for the Bears, 35-30 entering the final quarter.

Snohomish began the 4th on a 5-0 run, tying the game again. But every time Snohomish tied it up, Central Valley would respond. This time it was Lacey Hull, Lexie’s twin, who knocked down a momentum shifting three pointer. The Bears never looked back. They completed their perfect 29-0 season with a well deserved 57-48 championship win!

The Final Score
Central Valley 57, Snohomish 48.

Top Performers:

Central Valley
Lexie Hull- 16 points, 8 rebounds

Snohomish
Madeline Smith- 28 points

Tacoma Dome 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Bothell 8 2 5 26 41
Snohomish 9 5 15 18 47

Following their thrilling overtime victory against Lewis & Clark on Thursday, Snohomish earned a meeting in the semis with Bothell who put Kentlake away with relative ease in the opening round.

The game jumped out to a sluggish start with only a 14-10 halftime score as both teams struggled to find a rhythm and moreover the bottom of the cylinder.

Snohomish broke the game open in the third quarter by going on a 15-5 run which set up a race to the final whistle. Madison Pollock and Madeline Smith led the way with 17 points each. The Cougars who received 19 from Taya Corosdale were unable to make a late charge and the Panthers move on to the 4A championship!

The Final Score
Snohomish 47, Bothell 41.
