The 2pm boys quarterfinal comprised Metro League foes in defending champs Garfield and upstart Cleveland. The high-flying Bulldogs led early with contributions by defensive specialist Terrell Brown and pure scorer Jaylen Nowell. However, CJ Elleby would not let the Eagles go down without a fight and knocked down bucket after bucket to keep Cleveland within striking distance.

The tremendous balance of the Bulldogs proved too much in the end with five double-figure scorers with Brown and Nowell tied at 16 apiece. Cleveland’s Fahad Sharif joined Elleby’s charge down the stretch with a combined 41 points in the contest forcing Garfield to keep their starters in for nearly the entire second half. Garfield never put their lead in jeopardy and punched their ticket to face Rainier Beach in a marquee game tomorrow night.

The Final Score
Garfield 83, Cleveland 66.

A championship caliber game in the opening round of the state tournament pitted a pair of undefeated Eastern Washington powerhouses in Moses Lake and Central Valley.

Lexie Hull established her presence in the first half netting 12 points and 9 rebounds in the opening two quarters. Moses Lake used a balanced attack including sharpshooter Jamie Loera and Abby Rathbun in the post to earn a one point lead at the break.

The Chiefs showed defensive intensity that carried them early in the third quarter that provided them an early boost of momentum including a grand total of 14 and 12 for Loera and Rathbun respectively. However, Central Valley made their move in crunch time as Hailey Christopher and Hull combined for 30 total points and put Moses Lake in a must-foul situation in the final minutes in which the Bears capitalized at the stripe.

The Final Score

Todd Beamer 16 3 14 7 40

Todd Beamer Titans

Todd Beamer took control of the contest from the tip scoring in double figures before Skyview could register any points. Nia Alexander and Bria Rice led the charge with turnovers in Skyview’s back-court leading to easy buckets. Skyview eventually cobbled together a response to cut the lead down and give themselves a chance to talk things over at halftime and make a run down the stretch.

The Storm did exactly that by controlling the glass and challenging Beamer’s field goal attempts in the paint. The trio of Ashlee Comastro, Madison Lord, and Riley Friauf willed Skyview within one possession until Nia Alexander put the game on ice. Beamer’s leading scorer buried a three with the shot clock expiring pushing the Titans lead out of reach. Beamer advances to the semis on Friday.

The Final Score
Todd Beamer 40, Skyview 35.

Garfield Proves Strength in Regional Victory Over Rams

Bellevue College 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final

Garfield 33 29 26 30 118

Garfield Bulldogs

Defending 3A champions Garfield entered this season as a clear favorite to repeat in 2016 given their returning core group and added talent this year. Saturday’s regional contest with Wilson served as the Bulldogs final step to get back to the state tournament.

Wilson found themselves in a tough situation early when Garfield’s defense strung together a series of turnovers leading to transition buckets. This stifling defensive display resulted in 33 big first quarter points. The Rams were able to match the ‘Dogs bucket for bucket as the half progressed including five finishing with double digits led by senior captain David Jenkins Jr. who ended with 19. However, the halftime lead created by knock-down Jaylen Nowell jumpers and Terrell Brown slashing to the cup gave them an edge they would not put in jeopardy.

As the second half wore on, Wilson’s Nate Fisher found a groove recording a cool 17 points on 6/7 shooting, but former Wilson Ram Alphonso Anderson netted 20 in addition to 8 rebounds. This proved enough to eventually put this game on ice. Afterwards, Anderson talked about facing former friends on Wilson saying, “It was fun playing against the old guys. Dave, Montre; been playing with them since I was little.” When asked about the depth of this talented Bulldogs roster, Anderson responded, “We’ve got pretty much ten division-1 basketball players on the team. At practice, we get each other better.” Finally, he said the defensive intensity shown is a result of the team’s eagerness on offense and that, “Defense leads to dunks, so as many steals as we can get, the more dunks we get!” Ed Haskins finds himself three wins from three state titles in a row, can Garfield complete the task at hand?

The Final Score
Garfield 118, Wilson 80.

Bellevue senior Anna Wilson

Leah Krautter’s undefeated Wolverines continued their streak of dominance on Saturday night in Bellevue’s lopsided win over Wilson to earn another trip the TDome in the final week of the season. This game was decided before intermission when BHS took a 46-17 lead into the locker room. Tatiana Streun, Quinessa Caylao-Do, and Anna Wilson led the charge by combining for 36 first half points. Kiki Knox and Erica Hamlin countered with 7 & 6 respectively in the half, but this proved to not be enough.

The second half was merely procedural with the result evident allowing Bellevue to demonstrate its depth. Nine Wolverines scored to which Streun commented about after the game by saying, “We don’t have bench players. We all contribute…everyone can shoot, everyone can pass the ball. We just play as a team and it’s great to be a part of.” In regards to the team’s chemistry with new players added this season, Streun added, “It’s like they’ve been here for four years and there’s nothing holding us back as a team.”

The all-around balance of BHS helped the Wolverines reassure their position as one of the favorites heading into finals weekend. Will Bellevue win the requisite three games to hoist the hardware and claim a perfect season?

The Final Score
Bellevue 79, Wilson 26.

Bellevue College 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Mountlake Terrace 8 11 4 12 35
Bellevue 11 11 16 5 43

Bellevue Wolverines

Despite having only 6 players active in Saturday’s regional game against Mountlake Terrace, Bellevue was able to punch their ticket in a low-scoring affair with the Hawks. An early Bellevue lead created by the likes of Sharif Khan and sharpshooter Colin Suter was gradually whittled away heading into halftime as Khyree Armstead found his rhythm recording all nine of his points in the first two quarters.

They were unable to carry the momentum into the third quarter when the Wolverines put the clamps down on defense. Mikey Henn and Cole Cirillo helped give their team a lead Terrace would not surmount. As a result, the Wolverines find themselves playing March basketball once again.

After the game, Sharif Khan discussed the excitement of returning to the Dome stating, “It’s a great feeling just knowing we’re going back there, and we have one more shot at it.” When asked about the team’s performance on Saturday, he said, “Guys stepped up big time, Cole Cirillo was huge for us, Andrew Kenny played extremely tough, and then Colin Suter was knocking down shots.” If they end up meeting with favorites Garfield or Rainier Beach in the final game, Khan explains the importance of “mental toughness. As long as we come out with an attitude that we can compete is all you can ask for.”

The Final Score
Bellevue 43, Mountlake Terrace 35.

Sparling’s 31 Propels Ellensburg to Finals Appearance

Sparling’s 31 Propels Ellensburg to Finals Appearance

Saturday- February 27th 2016 Boys 2A Regionals
Bellevue College 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
Mark Morris 15 16 12 16 59
Ellensburg 19 9 16 26 70

Ellensburg senior Coleman Sparling

A clash of elite scorers told the story in a 2A winner-to-state match-up between Mark Morris and Ellensburg. Coleman Sparlings game-high 34 points proved enough to lead the Bulldogs past a 32 point effort by Monarchs junior Will Burghardt. The Monarchs carried a slim lead into the intermission through an increasingly emphasized defensive effort as the first half wore on.

It appeared this game was headed for a close finish as the second half progressed. However, Ellensburg put that possibility to bed when Bryce Helgeson, Trey Bennett, and Sparling put together a run that caught the Monarchs off guard. This put Bill Bakamus in a coaching situation where they needed to foul the Bulldogs and hope they could catch up by slowing the game down. Ellensburg didn’t waver and was able to stave off Mark Morris for a comfortable win.

After the game, Bulldogs coach Del Enders talked about their game plan down the stretch which included “speeding them up, forcing them to take quick shots; quick rebounds, and that just plays right into it then they have to foul us.” In regards to Sparling’s big time performance, Enders said, “He would not be denied. 19 points in the first half, all kinds of rebounds.” As Ellensburg prepares for the state finals, the Bulldogs will focus on free throw shooting considering “throughout the game, especially on one-and-ones, we’re notorious for leaving the front end.”

The Final Score
Ellensburg 70, Mark Morris 59.
