With the 2015-2016 season in the books, here are the final top ten rankings for the 4A Boys classification!

1) Federal Way (29-0):
The Eagles defended their title by completing a perfect 29-0 season to capture back-to-back 4A championships.


2) Kentwood (22-7):
The junior-laden Conks went toe-to-toe with Federal Way through three quarters in the regular season and title game; an indicator of their strength.


3) Gonzaga Prep (23-4):
The Bullpups were mere inches from knocking off Federal Way in the quarterfinals as a three-pointer the buzzer for the win narrowly glanced off. Beware of GPrep next season!


4) Curtis (25-5):
Tim Kelly takes the Vikings on another deep playoff run to cap off another strong season as one of the top 4A squads in Washington.


5) Union (23-3):
Vancouver’s powerhouse fought back to capture a fourth place finish in the Hardwood Classic after a first-round departure to Gonzaga Prep on Thursday of the tourney.


6) Issaquah (21-5):
Champions of a tough KingCo conference and advancing to the elite eight secure the sixth spot for a quality Eagles campaign.


7) Lewis & Clark (18-7):
The Tigers faced the champs in round one of the tourney resulting in a quick departure but held their own against the best of the classification.


8) Cascade (21-2):
A memorable season in program history concluded in the regional round against the eventual runner-up Kentwood.


9) Woodinville (19-5):
The high-flying Falcons fell short of reaching the Tacoma Dome again, but were improved from the previous season.


10) Central Valley (20-6):
The Bears flew under the radar all season and when the dust settled finished at the Woodshed with a top eight finish in the state.

The final home game on Redmond’s schedule took place Friday night against league-leading Issaquah. The Mustang seniors were honored prior to the contest adding to the anticipation for the home crowd who understood the playoff implications it carried. The Eagles were carrying a slight edge over Woodinville for the division lead, so Issaquah had plenty to play for in this game as well.

IHS jumped out early to a 16-6 lead in which they simply knocked down shots despite an honest Redmond defensive effort. However, a switch flipped in the contest sparked by senior guard Kevin Carpenter as Redmond put together a 21-2 run which nearly extended to halftime. Redmond senior Sava Trifunovic registered 8 points in the half to help give the ‘Stangs a 29-20 lead heading into the locker room.

Much like the start of the contest, Issaquah started the second half with some fire to quickly erase the deficit. Trevon Ary-Turner and Scott Kellum led the charge as the Eagles duo combined for 29 of their combined 38 points in the final two quarters. Within three minutes of the third quarter, the Redmond lead vanished. The 18-3 Issy run took the wind out the Mustang sails and the gap continued to grow. A 46 point second half proved too much for RHS and the Eagles avoided a pressure-packed ending to the game.

With a crowded top-half of the 4A KingCo girls standings and Issaquah in the mix, every game down the stretch is imperative to secure a playoff spot including Friday’s matchup with Redmond. Neither team could gain a lead more than a handful of points in the first half as both squads traded buckets. At times, the court looked like a war zone as multiple players would dive for loose balls and scrums developed in the paint. This made for an exciting start and the home Redmond team led by a pair at the break 24-22.

The Eagles took hold of the contest in the second half by knocking down tough shots through contact. Tatum Dow led the charge by scoring 10 in the quarter as part of a solid stretch that helped build an ever-growing lead. Dow’s 12 in the game joined Lauren Longo and Mariah VanHalm as Issaquah’s trio of double-figure scorers who added 10 and 17 respectively Despite the efforts of Teagyn Ohrt and her team-high 12 points, Redmond was unable to rally back in the final quarter. With the win, Issaquah remains firmly intact in the playoff chase.

4A State Basketball Rankings

4A State Basketball Rankings

As league play is in its final weeks and the playoffs are on the horizon, here at the top ten rankings for the 4A classification!

1) Federal Way: 18-0 (7-0)
Defending champs will be perched at the top until somebody knocks them off. Don’t expect this to happen anytime soon.


2) Curtis: 17-1 (10-0)
The Vikings continue their undeafeated mark against Washington state teams.


3) Cascade: 15-0 (9-0)
Gotell’s 51 points in Friday’s didn’t hurt the Bruins’ cause in solidifying themselves high in the rankings.


4) Gonzaga Prep: 14-1 (12-1)
Matty McIntyre’s Bullpups are the Beasts of the East. Many familiar names from the football championship squad.


5) Bellarmine Prep: 13-3 (8-0)
Can’t drop the Lions too far down considering their only in-state losses were to Lincoln and Curtis…by a combined seven points!


6) Union: 12-2 (7-0)
The Titans don’t rebuild, they reload.


7) Issaquah: 13-3 (11-1)
The second Eagles team in the top ten rankings is flying high once again on the Sammamish plateau.


8) Lewis & Clark: 12-3 (11-2)
The Tigers are hot on the heels of the Bullpups for the GSL lead.


9) Central Valley: 12-3 (10-3)
One of the top teams in one of the strongest leagues in 4A earns the Bears top ten honors.


10) Woodinville: 12-3 (9-3)
Tony Miller is a force to be reckoned with. Scored 20 in a win last week, 42 in a loss. Go figure.

Issaquah Avenges Regular Season Loss, Prevails Against Olympia

We have reached the “survive and advance” point of the season where a win retains the quest to the Tacoma Dome. An intriguing “play-in” matchup on Friday night featured round two between Issaquah and Olympia. These two non-league squads played just over a month ago in the state capital in which the Bears defended their home turf and won 32-14 in Ingersoll Stadium. For this one, Olympia (7-2) reciprocated by traveling north to the Sammamish plateau to take on Issaquah (6-3) as the second place finisher in the KingCo4A was pitted against the Narrows runner-up.

Both teams got off to a slow start with short-lived possessions as the opposing defensive units caused difficulty for the offense to move the chains. Issaquah took the first step grabbing momentum through their defensive intensity especially demonstrated in Eagle linebacker Danny Flores. His energy resonated to fellow teammates when Issaquah broke the deadlock at 1:51 in the first quarter. Connor Pederson took an interception 47 yards to the house after getting key blocks en route to the pylon. Pederson also kicked the extra point showing his versatility on the field. At 7:54 in the second frame, Bryce Hughes was rewarded from a handful of chunk runs when he punched in a 3 yard score to which the home crowd yelled Huuuuuuughes! Olympia furthered their uphill battle in the first two quarters by shooting themselves in the foot with personal fouls. However, before the first half concluded the Bears commitment to the run was rewarded when Scott Gunther turned what initially was a stop at the line of scrimmage into a 42 yard touchdown run. Issaquah responded with a 29 yard pass from Cam Humphrey to Pederson moments later. The Eagles were still hungry. Hughes scampered 30 yards for a pick six twenty seconds after the ensuing kickoff pushing the lead to 28-7 at the break.

The three touchdown lead built by the home team proved to be sufficient to prevail even though they were unable to score in the final twenty-four minutes of the ball game. The Eagle defense held the Bear attack at bay enough by only allowing a lone touchdown in the second half. The non-league opponents split the season series 1-1, but Issy gets the one that counts. Olympia concludes their season 6-4. Hopefully this organically created rivalry continues in years to come!

Skyline Stuns Eagles in Season Opener

Football season is back and the first Friday night of high school gridiron action featured a classic KingCo rivalry matchup between Issaquah and Skyline. The Spartans have had the upper hand against their plateau foe for over a decade and the Eagles were primed to turn the tides in front a capacity crowd on the premises of Gary Moore Stadium.

A slow pace of play dictated the entirety of the contest as both sides incorporated a heavy dose of passing and short possessions as the ball exchanged hands frequently. After a scoreless first quarter, Blake Gregory found Logan Wanamaker on a long flare down the left side for a big gain. This set up Rashaad Body for a 9 yard scamper to give the green six. Issaquah responded with a scoring drive of their own which closed with a 9 yard tie-toe grab by Joe Nelson from Cameron Humphrey. The scoreboard read 7-7 at the break.
The home team picked up an early touchdown in the second half, a 2 yard goal line dive by Bryce Hughes. Minutes later, Sparty responded as Gregory crossed the goal line untouched on a quarterback sneak. The ping-pong match continued when Jack Dellinger hauled in a pass by Humphrey on what appeared to be a defensive misread for 72 yards and a 21-14 lead.

Issaquah grabbed a two score lead early in the final frame on another Nelson reception. The Eagles were less than ten minutes from stunning Mat Taylor’s perennial 4A juggernaut. The visitors rallied the troops and drove down the field to set up another rushing touchdown for Boddie. Needing seven to tie the game up and send the game into overtime, Wanamaker did just that on a fourth down conversion with less than a minute remaining.

With a complete shift of momentum to the visitor sideline, Buddy Bland needed to rally his team to a score and a stop. They fell short on step one as a field goal attempt did not split the uprights. It was the Spartans chance to complete the comeback and they were faced with a similar predicament. Jack Crane pounded the pigskin through with his big left leg to seal the improbable victory for Skyline.

Game one of a varsity doubleheader on Friday night at Issaquah High School featured the host Eagles and the Skyline Lady Spartans. Both teams are jockeying for position in the 4A standings as league play heats up. The victor would take a big step in keeping pace with the KingCo leaders so the table was set for an exciting matchup of plateau rivals.

The home squad was able to score eight unanswered points to start the contest and gain early momentum. Coach Fithian was able to rally the troops and respond in a big way. Junior Cassidy Daugherty highlighted a Spartan run by knocking down a pair of triples. At the 2:30 mark in the first frame, Eagle coach Nicole Reid called a timeout to stop the Skyline attack. However, the green and white were on a 16-1 run by the end of the quarter. A strong defensive effort by SHS was led by Jade Loville and Maddie Adamson to help add onto their lead. Issaquah forward Ellen MacNary scored five second-quarter points to keep her team within striking distance. Despite her attempt at sparking a rally, Issy faced a double-digit deficit at the break trailing 32-21.

When play resumed, Skyline continued aggressive play by attacking the bucket and earning trips to the free throw line. Their 21/27 (78%) shooting from the charity stripe was a difference maker in the game as Issaquah was unable to get on extended scoring runs. The game was lengthened from the many starts and stops. Lady Spartan captain Taylor McKerlich scored 9 points in the second half en route to her 11 total points and Daugherty led all scorers with 20. Eagle freshman Mariah Van Halm had some nice takes to the cup as she led her team in scoring with 11 points. She helped IHS cut the deficit to single digits in the fourth, but the clock favored Skyline at this point and they were able to run away with the victory as the game came to a conclusion.

Jason Griffith’s Issaquah Eagles have picked up the ’14-’15 season where they left off last year when they made a deep run in the 4A state tournament. The plateau platoon appears to be a prime contender to raise the hardware in December with a player of the year caliber player and a super sophomore. However, as the new year turns, league play begins and each night on the floor is a challenge. The Skyline Spartans would visit the Eagles’ nest to take a crack at their league rival ahead in the standings. Bill McIntrye had the green and white ready to roll this Friday night.

Immediately following the opening tip, Ty Gibson buried a triple from the corner. However, the Spartans responded by matching the early scoring and in doing so, outmatching the home team in the level of intensity on both ends of the floor. A key play early in the contest was a block by Braden Ahlemeyer that sent the energetic Spartan student section into a frenzy. This swat led to a Spartan score on the other end that prompted an Issy timeout to regroup. This proved to be a smart coaching decision because the Eagles started to trim the deficit down and eventually take the lead. When Issaquah took a 27-24 lead at 3:37 in the second quarter, the resolve of Skyline was tested. They passed. At halftime, the Spartans regained the lead at 33-32.

When play resumed, more of the same back-and-forth trend continued as there were countless momentum swings and lead changes. Eagle sophomore Trevon Ary-Turner knocked down back-to-back triples to give the purple and white a 45-39 lead midway through the third. But once again, Skyline kept the game within reach. Down the stretch, Sparty realized they played too well to let this opportunity slip. Ahlemeyer knocked down two buckets in the post in the waning minutes. Additionally, Skyline captain Robert Biegaj pulled down a long rebound that led to a layup with twenty seconds left. Leading by four, the Spartans did not allow the Eagles to send this game into overtime and the major upset was complete.

Skyline Makes Quick Work of Issaquah

Welcome back to High School Football! It truly is like Christmas every Thursday through Saturday when the Gridiron starts rolling. Our first game of the year, and a matchup of two teams who battled for a playoff berth last year, saw the Skyline Spartans face off against the Issaquah Eagles at a packed Gary Moore Stadium. Last year’s matchup was a battle to the end, with Skyline defeating the Eagles by a final of 30-17 on the back of a 27 point third quarter. This year’s matchup was far from close, as the Spartans dominated the line of scrimmage and the football game.

Rashaad Boddie (pronounced body) rumbled for four first half touchdowns for the Spartans, two on quick passes, and two on rushes up the middle. The Eagles could not match the size discrepancy on the lines, with their line averaging around 200 lbs. and Skyline’s line averaging around 250 lbs. Blake Gregory, Skyline’s junior quarterback added another score on a 2 yard scamper to finish off the first half with a Spartan 34-7 lead.

Skyline began to pull starters midway through the 3rd quarter, but still maintained their commanding lead. The game ended in a 48-21 blowout, with the Spartans starting off their promising season on the right foot. Coach Mat Taylor and company will like to make another run at state from the 4A King-Co conference, but will find great challenges in the upcoming weeks with Bothell and Eastlake.

Garfield Sneaks Past Issaquah to Face Bombers in State Final

In their fourth matchup on the year, the one loss Garfield Bulldogs faced off against the 19-6 Issaquah Eagles for a trip to the 4A state final. Garfield’s only loss came to these Eagles in the latter half of the regular season by just two points, a loss Garfield avenged in the KingCo championship game with an 18 point win.

The pace of this game was frantic at the beginning, resulting in one key player on each team getting two early fouls. Senior Jake Henke for the Eagles and senior Brayon Blake for the Bulldogs both sat the remainder of the first quarter and well into the second with their foul trouble. Garfield’s leading scorer Tramaine Isabell led all first quarter scorers with eight, and the Bulldogs took a four point lead into the second.
Issaquah took the momentum back in the second quarter behind 11 points from senior Brian Watson. He led the 21 point rally for the Eagles, who tied the game going into half at 34.

Foul trouble again became a factor in the third quarter, with both Blake and Torrence Baker for Garfield picking up their fourth fouls. Issaquah capitalized on the line and took a three point lead into the fourth.

The fourth quarter remained nail-biting close. Garfield shot well from the free-throw line all night, 23-27 overall, and they were able to tie the contest with just over two minutes to play. Zachariah Shepherd hit a three for the Dogs to put them up three, but fouled on the next defensive possession, fouling him out of the game. Ty Gibson hit two free-throws for the Eagles on the other end, but Isabell converted on a great dribble drive to regain the lead by three. Addison McIrvin was fouled on the next Issaquah possession and hit one of two at the line. He was fouled again on a Garfield miss and made both to tie the game at 59 with one minute to go. A kick ball gave the Bulldogs more time on the shot clock, and Henke fouled Jashaun Agosto for the Bulldogs on a three pointer with 20 seconds remaining, Henke’s fifth foul. Agosto hit two of three to go up 61-59. After a timeout, Eagle Brian Watson attempted a fade away from the baseline that missed, and the Bulldogs hung on to advance to the 4A state final. What a game!

The top half of the boys 4A bracket is stacked, with Garfield and Kentridge facing off, and this battle between Issaquah and the #1 ranked Jackson Timberwolves. Jackson has one loss on the season in a matchup against what was a very good Lincoln Abes team. Issaquah comes in at 18-6, but two were to Garfield and three were out of the state.

Both teams came out with great intensity, with great fan section support on both sides. Jackson had the upper hand early, with baskets from their leading scorers Dan Kingma and Jason Todd. But Issaquah responded with an onslaught of shot making from five different players in the first quarter. Issaquah took a strong 22-12 lead into the second quarter. The ten point first quarter lead remained going into halftime, 36-26 in favor of the Eagles.

Issaquah began pulling away early in the third, but Kingma hit back to back triples to maintain the ten point deficit late in the quarter. Issaquah extended their lead by one in the third, on the back of six points from freshman Trevon Ary-Turner. Jackson was on the ropes, down 11 going into the final frame.

The Timberwolves needed quick scoring to bring this one close, and started the fourth with a 5-0 run in the first 1:15 of play. Ary-Turner stopped the run with a brilliant spinning floater to put the Eagles back up eight with five minutes remaining. After a bucket for Jackson and a free-throw for the Eagles, Jason Todd converted a layup on a steal to cut the Issaquah lead to five with 2:30 remaining. Ty Gibson for the Eagles immediately answered with a short jumper then added one free-throw to put the Eagles up eight with just over a minute to play, 52-44. The Eagles added four more free-throws and upset the top ranked Timberwolves 56-44.

In what was supposed to be a close battle between the Issaquah Eagles and the Garfield Bulldogs, one team proved their dominance. The packed house at Juanita High School to see the 4A KingCo final knew the Bulldogs would bring intensity and pace to the contest. The only team to defeat them all year, the Issaquah Eagles would have to match that intensity to keep this one close. Garfield ensured that their will was the way, and punished the Eagles early and often.

Garfield jumped out to an early 9-2 run, which eventually turned into a 14-4 run and an 18-6 first quarter. Issaquah was on their heels for the duration of the quarter, reacting to the speed of the Bulldogs as opposed to being the aggressor on both sides of the floor. The second quarter wasn’t much better, as the Bulldogs increased their lead to 14 points entering the second half.

The Bulldogs relentless pursuit of offensive rebounds was the difference maker throughout this contest. Repeatedly Garfield would have two to three bodies in the paint on every attempted jumper, and Issaquah’s zone was not conducive to boxing out. Garfield extended their lead again at the end of the third, 58-35.

By this point the game was completely in hand, but kudos to the Eagles for putting up 30 points in the final quarter. When the dust settled, the Bulldogs took home the KingCo title, and the #1 seed from the district into state. Issaquah is also guaranteed a state berth.

With a Punishing First Quarter, Issaquah Takes Down Roosevelt

To the winner go the spoils in this contest; the 4A KingCo League semifinal matchup between Issaquah and Roosevelt. With a trip to state on the line for the winner, and a horrible draw to reach state for the loser, both teams were fighting tooth and nail for this precious victory.

Issaquah started the contest pretty much as well as they possibly could have. A punishing 17-3 lockdown in the first quarter, sparked by great defense and unfortunate finishing by the Rough Riders gave Issaquah a huge momentum boost. The Eagles biggest lead of the game came after another basket to start the second, leading 20-3 and poised for a blowout.

But Roosevelt would not back down. They continued to claw back on the shoulders of Nathan Batisti’s 21 points and Cam Haslam’s 16. They closed the gap to just nine entering the fourth quarter, and got as close as six three separate times in the fourth. But the Eagles always answered and it came from an unfamiliar source.

Sophomore Trevon Ary-Turner’s previous career high was 16 points against these Roughriders earlier in the season, which concluded in a 12 point win. This time he blew up, scorching Roosevelt from three and putting in an amazing 32 points and leading his Eagles to victory. Issaquah was also unconscious from the free-throw line, making all but one in the fourth quarter to seal their trip to state with a 78-68 victory.

Roosevelt will now have to win three straight to secure a spot in the state tournament.

Issaquah Soars Over Bothell in League Showdown

The marquee matchup of 4A KingCo on Tuesday night was undoubtedly a clash of the Eagles from Issaquah and host Bothell Cougars. Issaquah (5-4 overall, 4-1 league) are striving to keep pace with undefeated Garfield and create separation with the rest of the Crown division. Bothell (7-4, 3-3) are also in second place in their respective Crest division and are led by dynamic senior Josh Martin. If the Cougs could supply Martin with plenty of shots and get contributions up and down the roster, Bothell would have a great opportunity to send their crowd home happy.

Jason Griffith drew up a near-perfect game plan for this game as Issaquah imposed their will to play the way they wanted to. Their back-court pressure forced several Bothell turnovers early which led to points in bunches. The Eagles scored 24 points in the first frame, 11 of which from the hot hand of Ty Gibson who scored a team-high 19 points. Bothell switched to a zone defense in the second quarter and it paid dividends. Issaquah had difficulty penetrating into the paint and were forced to take outside shots that were not falling as regularly. The Cougars picked up momentum in the second quarter as freshman Josh Kollman buried two from downtown and Martin ignited the crowd with blocks that led to three of his thirteen total field goals in the game. At the break, the game was knotted up at 29 apiece.

The Eagles were eager to mimic their scoring spree in the first quarter and forget about the five points registered in the second as they distributed the rock to their several options on offense. Additionally, Josh Martin’s rebounding ability for Bothell was understood by the Eagles, but limiting boards from the rest of the Cougs was achieved successfully. The Eagles grabbed a seven point lead heading into the fourth quarter and kept the pedal down. The last few comeback spurts by BHS were thwarted quickly and Issaquah was able to pick up a big road win by the final score of 65 to 56.

At risk was the #1 team in the 4A KingCo-Crown league, with the matchup of all-too-familiar opponents who have battled well over the past several years. The Skyline Spartans traveled to their neighbor Issaquah to face the Eagles, the winner to secure a matchup against the top of the KingCo-Crest league. Students and fans from all over came to create a buzz of noise that lasted until the game concluded, which saw

Issaquah broke the scoring drought first in the second quarter, a 44 yard pass from senior quarterback Jack Neary to his senior star wide receiver Derek Chapman. The Issaquah sideline exploded as their Eagles took a 7-0 lead. The teams would exchange field goals later in the quarter and Issaquah took a 10-3 lead into half.

Skyline coach Mat Taylor had something brewing in that halftime speech, because his Spartans came out ready to play in the second half. A 27-0 third quarter in favor of the Spartans completely changed the complexion of the game. Touchdowns came from all different avenues; a pass from Kilton Anderson to Derek Loville, two rushing scores, and a special teams score. Issaquah needed a response and succeeded early in the fourth on another strike from Neary to Chapman to cut the lead to 30-17. But Skyline’s defense held tough, with an amazing second half performance from their defensive line to pressure Neary relentlessly. Skyline secured the victory 30-17 and a matchup with the 4A KingCo-Crest champion Bothell.

Issaquah Aerial Assault Too Much For Roosevelt

The first of two matchups on Leon H. Brigham Field at Memorial Stadium on the first Friday of October featured the host Roosevelt Roughriders and Issaquah. The visiting Eagles squad set the tempo early by completing a 23 yard touchdown strike from Jack Neary to Derek Chapman. Issaquah scored 7 more points a mere 34 seconds later on a 7 yard reception by Jeff Shipley. The Eagles found the end zone one more time in the first frame to take a quick 21-0 lead. The Riders got onto the scoreboard with a 2 yard QB sneak by John Peterson. The efficient passing attack of Issaquah was sustained throughout the entire first half as they notched two more TDs by Shipley again and Tommy Nelson. At the break, the Eagles had a comfortable 35-7 lead.

Roosevelt came out of the locker room with a strong defensive game plan which ultimately shut out Issaquah the rest of the way. But the Riders had a lot of scoring to do. With just over 2 minutes remaining in the third Ian Ashbaugh hauled in a pass from Peterson for six. The Eagles defense was stingy in the redzone throughout the game, preventing several first and goal opportunities. Issaquah’s ability to take a stranglehold of the game early allowed them to control the tempo the rest of the game and ultimately walk away with a convincing 35-13 win.
