Abes Clinch League Title Against Panthers in Rematch
By Steve Dion

With one game remaining in the regular season, league titles are being locked up and the playoff seeding is in full effect. Friday night’s Pierce County League contest between the Lincoln Abes and Bonney Lake Panthers carried heavy conference championship implications. Bonney Lake beat Lincoln last season to win the conference, could Lincoln return the favor?

The Abes quickly moved the ball into scoring territory on the opening drive, but numerous penalties halted their progress and forced them to hand the ball to the Panthers. Bonney Lake tried to establish their run game through feeding tailback Jason Day time after time. Lincoln’s defense held their ground and prevented big gains.

As the half wore on, the Abes continued to shoot themselves in the foot with costly penalties and untimely turnovers to prevent them from picking up points. Tristian Kwon lit a spark for Lincoln with big gains that let the Panthers know they would need to pack some punch sooner than later. BL’s inability to sustain drives was their Achilles heel in the first half. The halftime scoreboard read 0-0.

When play resumed, Bonney Lake finally put together a scoring drive which included a pass from Kaeden Hammond to Day out of the backfield and a pass interference penalty. Tate Hamlett buried a 28 yard field goal for the first points of the game. Could Lincoln counter?

A failed drive turned the ball back to the Panthers, but Lincoln struck in a big way when Teshawn Seu took an interception 90 yards to the house for the lead.
Shortly thereafter, the Abes piled on with a 60 yard run by quarterback Joey Sinclair.

The Panthers simply could not recoil from the momentum swing and the damage was done for both sides. With the win and a loss by Stadium, the Lincoln Abes are winners of the 2016 Pierce County League title.

The Final Score:
Lincoln 14, Bonney Lake 3.

Woodinville Survives Triple OT Battle with Skyline to Claim KingCo Crown
By Steve Dion

A soggy Thursday night at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell featured the #5 Skyline Spartans (6-1 overall, 6-0 league) taking on the #6 Woodinville Falcons (7-0 overall, 6-0 league). This game would crown the KingCo 4A title even with one game remaining in the regular season. A championship buzz was in the air.

The Spartans grabbed control of the game in the first half when Isaiah Shim turned a handful of pitches from the backfield into big gains. They paid off with an 8 yard pass to Alex Diegel from Drew Kistner. The Falcons didn’t respond so Skyline added on with a razzle dazzle double pass for 53 yards from receiver Bradley Kim to CJ Moore. Woodinville was on the ropes early.

In an attempt to salvage the half with some momentum, the Falcons struck gold when Michael Roth bolted down the sideline and hauled in a perfectly placed deep ball by Jaden Sheffey. The scoreboard read 13-7 at the break.

Woodinville picked up where they left off when an early drive in the third quarter found them on the doorstep of a potentially leading score. However, a fumble near the goal line rolled into the endzone and was recovered by the Spartans.

Shim’s hard work in the first half paid off when the senior weaved his way for a 4th quarter score to put his team up by 14. Could the Falcons rally?

Mack Minnehan took the call and mere minutes later plowed his way to pay dirt to bring the contest back to one score. The Woodinville sideline erupted.

After a gutsy defensive stop, the Falcons had a chance to tie the game. Nash Fouch stepped in with a tremendous grab in the corner of the endzone to bring the ballgame to 21 apiece. Skyline opted to run clock and attempt to win in overtime.

Woodinville had the first crack in overtime and chose to keep feeding Minnehan the ball. After some big chunks of yards, he pushed the ball past the plane to put the pressure on the Spartans.

With a hungry Woodinville defense that could taste victory, Skyline needed a clutch play to keep their hopes alive. On 4th and 10 from the 11 yard line, Kister found Kim over the middle for exactly 10 yards to earn a fresh set of downs from one yard out. They punched it in.

Skyline opened second overtime with a handful of quick passes to move the chains and set up shim for a goal line plunge.

On Woodinville’s first play of double OT, Minnehan ran into a wall of tacklers but somehow emerged from the pile and took the ball to the house to bring the game to a THIRD OVERTIME!

Woodinville had the first crack in which Fouch showed off his great ball skills hauling in a 50/50 ball in the corner to put his team back on top.

Facing a fourth and goal from the four yard line, could Skyline continue this tight-rope act? The Falcons defense broke up a would-be touchdown pass to seal the win and a league title prompting the Woodinville crowd to pour onto Pop Keeney Stadium field.

The Final Score:
Woodinville 42, Skyline 35.

O’Dea Dethrones Crusaders in Downtown Thriller
By Steve Dion

Friday night under the Space Needle at Memorial Stadium featured a heavyweight bout between #1 Eastside Catholic & #2 O’Dea. Both teams entered the contest undefeated with bragging rights as top dog in the state on the line and a fast-track to a league title.

It is never good to start with a three and out and that’s unfortunately what O’Dea did. The Crusaders made them pay when Ze’shaun Lewis connected with Marcus Stoebner for a 53-yard score less than 3 minutes into the contest.

O’Dea regrouped with a drive highlighted by some nice Jamyn Patu runs. Patu eventually punched it in from 10 yards out to tie it up.

If there was any doubt about Hunter Bryant’s recovery process from knee injury in the Skyview game, it was put to rest when he took a screen pass 72 yards to the house to put EC back on top.

The half ended with a bit of controversy when the Cru were on the doorstep of breaking the game open. With 5 seconds remaining in the second quarter, they opted for a corner fade to Bryant which was broken up by Dominique Gates. The scoreboard read triple zeros, but the officials claimed there was one second remaining. Eastside Catholic was able to boot in a field goal for a 17-7 lead at the break with a fire-breathing Monte Kohler making his way to the locker room.

The Crusaders received the ball to start the second half and within the first minute, an errant snap rolled into the endzone and resulted in a safety making it an 8 point game.

O’Dea built some momentum off this play and kept the Cru attack at bay throughout the 3rd quarter.

The Irish had a chance to tie it up pending a two point conversion early in the 4th, but were stuffed by a gutsy goal line stand from the Eastside defense and settled for 3 cutting the deficit to 5 points. The Cru regained possession and were on the move to seal it. As they moved into Irish territory, Dominique Gates hauled in a massive interception for O’Dea.

This time, they took full advantage of the opportunity and from six yards out O’Dea quarterback Warren King rolled out and bolted to the corner pylon to take the lead. There was some déjà vu on the two-point conversion as King dashed to the goal line giving his team a 3-point lead.

Eastside had their shot. They moved the ball down the field in a hurry and were facing a 4th down deep in O’Dea territory. A Lewis pass was broken up, but defensive pass interference gave them a fresh set of downs.

The Cru moved it to the 3 yard line and called a timeout with less than 20 seconds remaining. On third down, Lewis drops back, sees a receiver streaking across the goal line, he lets it fly. Interception. Shea Carstens. Ballgame. O’Dea hands Eastside Catholic their first in-state loss since the 2013 season. Stay tuned the remainder of the season, there may be a sequel!

The Final Score:
O’Dea 20, Eastside Catholic 17.

Beach Boys Shut Out Roosevelt
By Steve Dion

A windy, rainy Thursday night at Memorial Stadium proved to be a perfect combo for the dominant run game of the Rainier Beach Vikings against Roosevelt.

Beach running back Freddie Roberson started his big game early by carving through the Rough Riders defense from 29 yards out to the endzone. Roosevelt’s passing game was shut down by the Viks defense and the run game was also slow out of the gates.

The Riders had their chance to even the score when Charlie Bradley & Conor Rowe each hauled in an interception. RB held their ground and Roberson ended the half on a high note with a 34 yard touchdown run.

Beach continued to pour down the points like the rain as the second half wore on and the running game continued to chip away chunks of yards. The Vikings defense put their stamp on the game with a fumble recovery for TD and punt block en route to a shutout. Don’t look now, but Rainier Beach is 7-0 heading into the final weeks of the regular season!

Rainier Beach 34, Roosevelt 0.

Sumner Stages Second Half Comeback to Knock Off Oly
By Steve Dion

Sumner Head Coach Keith Ross is well aware of the target his team has become and how each opponent the Spartans face are going to bring their best to try to knock off the top dog in the SPSL. Olympia was the next in line on Friday to challenge the league leader led by a strong running game featuring Scott Gunther.

Olympia’s game-plan was well executed in the first half, gumming up the point of attack led by Amir Matheney and preventing the potent Sumner playmakers from reaching the second level. The Bears generating their offense on the tough running of Gunther who moved the chains on critical third and fourth down conversions. This led to a pair of field goal by Skyler Davis who created a 6-0 halftime lead for Oly.

The Bears had kept the ball out of Connor Wedington’s hands for most of the first half, but the opening kickoff of the second half was when the trend was bucked. The UW commit brought the kick into Bear territory and moments later, he was in the endzone after a 37 yard scamper to the corner pylon for six.

The lead would shift back to the visitors when Davis buried his third field goal, but the trip to Sumner’s redzone was a golden opportunity to capitalize with a touchdown. The Spartans make them pay when they marched down the ball down the field and put the ball in Tre Weed’s hands who took a screen pass 31 yards to the house.

Sparty added on shortly thereafter with another Wedington score and was able to hang on despite a late touchdown for the Bears. Sumner moves to 6-0, Olympia picks up their first loss moving them to 5-1.

Skyline Tames Bothell Attack in Pivotal League Matchup
By Steve Dion

Skyline is beginning to really hit their stride as the regular season is rapidly winding down. Mat Taylor’s Spartans started their league clash with the tough Bothell Cougars at Pop Keeney with a pair of touchdowns which made it appear BHS may be in for a long night.

However, Coach Bainter rallied the troops and punched the ball into the endzone twice to bring the game back to even ground; a pair of touchdown passes by Jacob Sirmon to Daniel Johnson and DaVicious Wilson respectively. Before the break, the Spartans marched down the field on a drive which created a momentum swing that carried into the second half. Drew Kistner completed numerous quick passes to the sidelines to protect the clock and move the chains. With 28 seconds left in the second quarter, Kistner connected with Luke Stiles from 21 yards out to give Sparty a touchdown lead heading into the locker room.

When the game resumed, Skyline took the opening drive down the field and were on the doorstep of taking a two-score lead. Tanner Gunnells picked off a pass that was headed for the endzone handing the ball back over to Bothell. However, the Spartans defense stepped up and didn’t not allow the Cougs to capitalize eventually giving it back to their offense.

The game was put away when Isaiah Shim picked up some big chunk runs to set up a rushing touchdown for Kistner. The scoring concluded with a 53-yard bomb to Bradley Kim. The scramble at the top of KingCo 4A continues with Skyline taking over the reins.

The Final Score:
Skyline 34, Bothell 13.
