Bellevue Takes Route 66 over Peninsula

These Bellevue Wolverines, who seem to never lose, just rattled off their 66th straight win, with a fine 31-7 performance over the Peninsula Seahawks on Friday night in the Washington State quarterfinals. The Wolverines, led by Sam Richmond on the ground were able to capitalize on an unfortunate injury for the Seahawks.

Big number 77, Caleb Greer for the Seahawks went down with an ankle injury late in the second quarter, in just a 3-0 ballgame at that point. With this injury on the interior line, Bellevue was able to score quickly with a Sam Richmond touchdown.

Greer was able to return in the second half, but was limited by his injury and did not finish the contest. This opened up running holes all over the field for the Wolverines, who put up 21 straight in the third quarter to take a commanding 31-0 lead. Peninsula was able to score on a great throw by Robert Kvinsland to Kyle Olson-Urbon midway through the fourth, but it was too little too late for the Hawks.

Bellevue’s defense was menacing throughout, only allowing 6 total yards in the first half. Bellevue will advance to the state semifinal to take on the winner of Marysville Pilchuck and Columbia River.

Marysville-Pilchuck has been on everybody’s mind.  The Tomahawks took on Meadowdale with a packed house looking on, they got the win.  We have broken down the top 10 Washington State 3A Classification Teams for you.

1) Bellevue 8-0, 6-0 League
The Wolverines rattle off another undefeated regular season. They have a great chance to raise the hardware in December once again.


2) Eastside Catholic 8-1, 4-0 League
Undefeated against teams from Washington and 1-1 out of state record. This may be Thielbahr’s best chance to capture a state title.


3) O’Dea 8-1, 4-1 League
Monte has rested the best tailback in the state through the latter half of the season. Myles Gaskin and the veteran lineman from the Irish have a playoff run in them.


4) Marysville-Pilchuck 7-1, 4-0 League
The community has rallied around this team in the wake of tragedy and they are responding by playing great football heading into the postseason.


5) Lincoln 9-0, 7-0 League
An undefeated regular season gives the Abes another crack at the best 3A has to offer. Will Kitna be able to make another step and overtake the elite teams in the postseason?


6) Peninsula 8-1, 7-0 League
After losing a one-point game in the season opener against Gig Harbor, the Seahawks have won eight straight en route to a 3A SPSL title run.


7) Auburn-Mountainview 8-1, 6-1 League
The Lions have plenty of talent at the skill positions to make some noise in the playoffs, but a push to the Tacoma Dome will be a tall task for a team with limited postseason experience.


8) Oak Harbor 6-1, 4-0 League
Hats off to the Wildcats for awarding the 3A Wesco League title to Marysville-Pilchuck. That game projected to be great measuring stick for Oak Harbor, but the circumstances rightfully took priority.


9) Kennedy Catholic 7-0, 4-0 League
Spotless record for the Lancers with only 30 points allowed all season. The Seamount did not present any great obstacles, but Bourgette’s boys will not back down from any playoff challengers.


10) Mount Spokane 7-2, 5-1 League
The Wildcats’ two losses were by a total of 10 points by Sandpoint (ID) and Gonzaga Prep. Beating several 4A teams throughout the season earns this Greater Spokane League squad the tenth spot.

The question we are asked each week is simply, who can defeat Bellevue?  Bellevue continues to be the team everyone is looking to beat.  We have broken down the top 10 Washington State 3A Classification Teams for you.

1) Bellevue 6-0, 4-0 League
It is no surprise to see the Wolverines perched at the number one spot in the rankings. Goncharoff continues to put an elite high school football team under the Friday night lights every week.


2) Eastside Catholic 6-1, 4-0 League
The victory over O’Dea last Friday earns the Crusaders the number two ranking. Thielbahr has the pieces to bring his team to the state championship game for the third straight year.


3) O’Dea 6-1, 3-1 League
The Fighting Irish roster is loaded, so the loss to Eastside Catholic will certainly not slow down Kohler’s march back to the Tacoma Dome.


4) Lincoln 7-0, 5-0 League
The Abes are averaging 56 points per game including a 91 point effort. Jon Kitna’s team may not have had any true tests yet, but they will get a chance to go toe-to-toe with the state’s best.


5) Marysville-Pilchuck 6-1, 4-0 League
Losing to O’Dea without your star running back doesn’t mean much when you take down a top 10 team in 4A (Lake Stevens) and beat everyone else by at least 27 points.


6) Peninsula 6-1, 5-0 League
After a thrilling victory over Auburn-Mountainview last week, the Seahawks have vaulted up to six on the rankings. The decisive win over Lakes was nice, and the lone loss is a 30-29 grinder to Gig Harbor.


7) Auburn-Mountainview 6-1, 4-1 League
Someone had to win the back-and-forth classic between the Lions and Peninsula. The margin was so thin that AMHS sits right under the Hawks in the rankings as they have proven their strength thus far.


8) Meadowdale 6-1, 5-0 League
It is fitting that the dark horse in the rankings are the Mavericks. They are undefeated in competitive league play and the one loss on the record was against Lake Stevens by a touchdown on the road.


9) Kennedy Catholic 7-0, 5-0 League
An undefeated record this late in the season is impressive even considering a strength of schedule that may be lacking. Until they even sniff a loss, the Lancers keep earning top ten consideration.


10) Oak Harbor 5-1, 4-0 League
The Wildcats are yet to face their strongest opponent of the year as Marysville-Pilchuck makes a visit, but they have accomplished enough this year to grab a top ten nod.

Bellevue Proves Too Much for Glacier Peak

On a gorgeous Friday evening in Bellevue, the hometown Wolverines welcomed in the Glacier Peak Grizzlies from just a few miles north. The Wolverines have won the 3A state title 11 of the past 13 years, and prior to the game, maintained a 58 game winning streak. This streak would continue to 59 by the end of the evening, with Bellevue putting together another dominant performance.

The onslaught began in the first quarter with a Yofiel Wyle touchdown run, followed by a 74 yard touchdown pass from Justice Rogers to Christoph Hirota. The Wolverines are not known for throwing the football, but Rogers throws an enticing deep ball, forcing safeties to play back and opening up the box for their tremendous running game. A safety bumped the Wolverines to 16-0 after one quarter.

The second quarter saw much of the same from Bellevue, with two more touchdowns and not allowing the Grizzlies to cross mid-field. Glacier Peak didn’t see Bellevue territory in this ballgame until 2:50 seconds left in the game. The Wolverine defense was menacing; extremely fast towards the ball and swarming tackling. Glacier Peak had a couple of glimmers of hope with on target passes from their quarterback Brady Southard, but drops plagued the Grizzlies throughout and they were unable to put points on the board.

Bellevue continued their streak and portrayed their dominance yet again, with a 30-0 shutout win over Glacier Peak.

Ahead of Schedule on a Great Journey

Join us as Dick Fain chats with Coach Jeremy Thielbahr about 4th ranked Eastside Catholic’s football program, being in the playoffs 3 years in a row, and in 2 state championship games the last 2 years.

Since Coach Thielbahr and his staff took over in 2011, it seems the road to winning in 3A always goes through Bellevue, so he hopes this is the season his Crusaders can win it all.

“We had to do some things to get our minds and our kids to this level of competitive camaradarie and aggressiveness on the field – and I think we’ve done that.”

How is Coach Thielbahr able to focus on the Metro league instead of the upcoming state championship game ? “We’ve got great talent, smart kids who understand what we’re asking them to do, have faith in their coaches, and believe in what we do.”

With a healthy program of good senior, junior, sophomore and freshman players, they are excited to see where the season will take them and looking forward to being able to win year after year.

Huge Third Quarter Propels Rainier Beach over Bellevue

The second semifinal matchup for 3A boys saw the undefeated Rainier Beach Vikings against the 3A KingCo champion Bellevue Wolverines. Bellevue faced a tough match in this game; going against the state’s finest.

The first half of this game progressed exactly how Bellevue wanted. They kept the game low scoring by significantly slowing the pace and keeping the Vikings off the offensive glass. Rainier Beach shot 55% from the field in the first half to Bellevue’s 41%, but still the Vikings trailed by one entering the third quarter.

Rainier Beach adopted the full court press to start the second half and it worked to perfection, leading to a quick 8-0 Viking run. Bellevue struggled to keep the slow pace from the first half, as Beach put up two more points in the third quarter that they did in the whole first half. Beach gained the momentum going into the final quarter, holding a 54-38 lead. Four Vikings were in double figures at the end of three, compared to just one Wolverine.

The Beach lead hovered around fifteen points until just over a minute remaining, when Bellevue hit two threes to cut the lead to single digits. But a steal by Djuan Piper and a leak out and one finish put the Vikings back up 12 with 45 seconds to play. Beach won the contest by that 12 point margin, 73-61, to face Eastside Catholic in the state final, which will be their fourth matchup of the year.

Bellevue Cruises over One Loss Stanwood

3A state basketball heated up in the quarterfinal matchup between the Bellevue Wolverines and the one loss Stanwood Spartans. Bellevue, regarded as one of the top teams in the state, came into this contest at 20-4, with big wins over O’Dea and Lincoln down the stretch. Stanwood experienced their only loss of the season just two weeks ago against Shorecrest, but took down Foss in the round of 16 to advance to the dome.

Stanwood jumped out to a frantic pace and an 11-2 first quarter lead. The early lead did not phase the Wolverines, who remained calm and capitalized off Stanwood turnovers. The Wolverines closed the first quarter on a 16-4 run to take an 18-15 lead into the second.
The Wolverines scored the first 10 points to extend their 16-4 run to end the first to a 26-4 run spanning both quarters. Lakeside transfer Zack Moore heated up for the Wolverines in the second quarter, scoring 10 of his team’s 15 points. Bellevue led by as many as 14 in the second and took a 33-22 lead into the third quarter.

Stanwood finally stayed even with the Wolverines in the third, with both teams playing scrappier basketball than the first half. The Wolverines capitalized on easy baskets, setting good back screens leaving their teammates wide open under the hoop. The Bellevue lead excelled to fifteen early in the fourth, and they stalled every Stanwood run by great offensive execution. Bellevue controlled throughout, and will advance to the state 3A semifinal on Friday.

Bellevue Spoils Kangs’ Senior Night, Remains Undefeated in KingCo

Winning league games on the road this time of the high school hoops season is a tall task. The Bellevue Wolverines (11-0 league, 14-2 overall) were set to face off against the Lake Washington Kangaroos (9-2, 12-4) on senior night. In order for BHS to pick up their fifth win away from Wolverine Way and stay unbeaten in KingCo play, they would need to weather the storm brought by the Kangs on Tuesday night.

The first quarter of this ball game was dominated by the visitors as Bellevue picked up a double digit lead after eight minutes of play. Their choice to play the Kangs man-to-man on the defensive side of the ball showcased their size advantage and led to numerous turnovers. Chris O’Connor’s Wolverines were lethal in transition early as precision passing primarily through junior guard Kyle Foreman led to scoring in bunches. LWHS coach Ryan Staudacher called a timeout after trailing 26-9 and was able to motivate his guys to go into halftime with a pulse. A much-needed 11-6 run to close the second quarter left the visitors leading by a dozen with much work needed by the Kangaroos to climb back into the contest.

Refusing to let this game spiral out of control, Lake Washington was motivated to close the gap in the final sixteen minutes of play. The Kangaroos were able to limit Bellevue to only 7 points in the third quarter, but failure to capitalize by scoring only 8 with such a sizable deficit hindered the comeback. A critical moment in the game was a blocking foul called on Jamal Muhammad with LWHS trailing by single digits. After two made free throws, the Bellevue lead was back to 11. In the final quarter, the Kangs would catch some fire from three point range as senior Jeffrey Staudacher brought his team within 7. However, a gutsy response by BHS junior K. Foreman in the form of a floater took the wind out of the home team’s sail. A putback and one by Dylan Foreman was the cherry on top for the Wolverines as the guests picked up a quality win by the final score of 53-41. Timely responses to LWHS runs shows that Bellevue will be a tough contender come postseason.

The Wolverines Conquer 3A Again, 6th Straight

3A Washington state football has been dominated by the Bellevue Wolverines for the past 12 years. Ten state titles in that timeframe and a win in Friday’s matchup against the Eastside Catholic Crusaders would make six in a row.

Eastside came out throwing on their first possession, putting together a good drive after a 57 yard completion to Colin Macilvennie. Quarterback Harley Kirsch dropped back to pass on the next play, tossed the ball into the end zone for running back Brandon Wellington but the pass was a tad underthrown. Safety (also quarterback) Timmy Haehl was able to make a leaping interception, giving Bellevue their first possession. Five plays later Haehl connected with Ross Connors for a 65 yard touchdown to give Bellevue the early 7-0 lead.

After two punts from Eastside and one from Bellevue, the Wolverines got the ball back on their own 27 yard line. Two plays later Haehl busted free for a 70 yard touchdown run to give the Wolverines a 14-0 lead.

The Crusaders needed an answering drive and they put together a well-executed eight play 57-yard drive that was capped off by a 1 yard quarterback keeper by Harley Kirsch to close the Wolverine lead to 14-7. But Bellevue stormed right back and converted on a 9 yard Sam Richmond run to elevate the lead back to 14, 21-7.

After two Crusader offensive plays, senior Wolverine Shane Bowman forced a fumble that was recovered by Bellevue on the Crusader 14 yard line. Two plays later Richmond struck again, his second on the evening, to put the Wolverines up 28-7. After a three and out by the Crusaders, Bellevue struck again on a Haehl run, his second of the day. Bellevue took a 35-7 lead into halftime.

Bellevue received the second half kick but was forced to punt to the Crusaders. Deep inside their own territory on their second offensive play, Kirsch dropped back and threw a deep ball over the middle that was intercepted again by Haehl of the Wolverines, who returned in 32 yards for another Bellevue score. After another Crusader turnover, Bellevue added a Kian Khodamoradi field goal to push the lead to 45-7.

To make the game a little more respectable, the Crusaders put together a great drive in the beginning of the fourth quarter that was capped off by a 1 yard Elisha Pa’Aga run. Both teams added a score to close out the fourth quarter and Bellevue pulled off another win in convincing fashion, 52-20. Congratulations to the Bellevue program for winning 6 straight state titles, and 11 of the last 13.

Bellevue Closes Another Undefeated Regular Season

In somewhat of a rivalry game, the Bellevue Wolverines were matched with the Mercer Island Islanders to close another undefeated regular season for the Wolverines. The rivalry is much more apparent in basketball, as these two teams battle competitively on the hard-court but Bellevue has had the upper hand on the gridiron.

Bellevue struck fast and early, with a 78 yard touchdown pass from QB Timmy Haehl to sophomore standout receiver Isaiah Gilchrist. The story of this game was Gilchrist, who added another touchdown catch and a blocked FG return for a touchdown, for three scores on the day. The Wolverines scored 28 points in the first half but allowed a late score to the Islanders, a pass from backup QB Alfonso Gonzalez to Eric Kim to trim the lead to 28-7 at half.

Bellevue was again dominate in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points to secure the 49-7 victory and another undefeated regular season. Mercer Island, after three losses to close the season, will finish with a respectable 4-4 record.

Bellevue Wins in Bellevue Fashion

On a brisk fall night in Bellevue the undefeated home side Wolverines were matched up against an undefeated opponent, the Mount Si Wildcats. It was homecoming for Bellevue, so their stands were packed with students and parents. As for Mount Si, this was an opportunity to tackle the #1 team in the country, and their fans knew it. Both stands were packed to watch the best that 3A Washington has to offer.

Mount Si received the opening kickoff and put together a great drive, a mix of passing and running, to punch in a touchdown and take the lead 7-0. Their fan section went crazy; could this be the year that someone tops Bellevue? The Wolverines put a quick stop to that thought. 52 straight points from Bellevue, sparked by huge runs from highly touted running back and defensive back Budda Baker and electrifying quarterback Timmy Haehl, put this game out of reach early in the third quarter. Mount Si found the endzone once more in the fourth quarter to make the final score a little friendlier to the eye for Wildcat fans, 52-13.

Bellevue Rolls Over Skyline

The Emerald City Kickoff Classic nightcap saw the Washington state 3A and 4A champions clash in Husky Stadium. Bellevue has won the past five 3A state championships, and Skyline has won four of the last five 4A state championships, a clear clash of the titans. Bellevue came to play early and seemingly caught the 4A state champs off guard, capitalizing on one costly turnover deep in Skyline’s territory and scoring on two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter.

Missed tackles for the Spartans capped off a tough second quarter for Skyline, who found themselves down 35-0 on two more Bellevue rushing touchdowns and one passing touchdown from Timmy Haehl to Marek Spooner. The team speed discrepancy was very apparent from the onset of this game; it seemed as if Bellevue was in a different gear for the first 24 minutes of this contest.

Skyline began to move the football more in the third quarter, putting together a couple of good drives and moving into Bellevue territory. The Wolverine defense bent a little bit in the third but did not break, and Bellevue added a field goal in the quarter to go into the fourth up 38-0.

Both teams began using reserve players in the fourth, as the game was already well over by half. Skyline managed to get on the board late in the quarter, on a long run by Kilton Anderson. Bellevue also added a touchdown in the quarter, and sealed the victory 45-7.

Kickoff Classic Preview: Skyline vs. Bellevue

To close the evening, the Emerald City Kickoff Classic brought in the two best teams in Washington, a matchup between the 4A Skyline Spartans and the 3A Bellevue Wolverines.  Bellevue has claimed the 3A state crown in 10 of the last 12 seasons, and hasn’t lost a game since 2010.  Their last loss came to these Skyline Spartans.  Coach Mat Taylor and the Spartans have raised the 4A state trophy in four of the last five seasons, and are looking to avenge their 2011 loss to the Wolverines.  This game is not only for ‘Eastside’ bragging rights, but for state bragging rights, as both of these teams are looking to repeat in 2013.

These series of games will be the second set of games in newly renovated Husky Stadium following the Husky opener last Saturday, Aug 31st, in the Dawg’s rout over Boise State. The Skyline – Bellevue game will kick off at 7pm, Saturday Sept 7th. Tickets are $15 at the door and $10 for seniors and students. Good luck to both of our defending state champions!

In their fourth matchup of the season, the Bellevue Wolverines played the Mercer Island Islanders for the 3rd/4th seed in the Sea-King district.  Bellevue won all three matchups coming into this contest, and Mercer Island was looking for something to carry them past the Wolverines for the higher seed in regionals.

Because these two teams had seen each other so many times, both defenses were prepared for the offensive sets from their counterparts.  Both teams combined for 17 turnovers in the first, compared to just 14 points.  Bellevue took a 9-5 lead into the second.

Mercer Island started the second quarter on a 12-2 run, taking the lead over the Wolverines 17-11.  Bellevue responded with a three pointer from Erin McGowan and a one for two showing at the line from Tatiana Steun to cut the halftime lead to two, 17-15.

Capitalizing off of four offensive rebounds early in the third quarter, the Wolverines came back to tie the Islanders at 21.  Bellevue controlled the glass in the quarter and took a 25-24 lead into the fourth.

Both teams were in the bonus in the fourth quarter, and the final few minutes of the ballgame came down to free-throw execution.  Bellevue had a seven point cushion late in the fourth, but failed to convert from the line, allowing Mercer Island to cut the lead to one.

The Wolverines responded, with a late basket from freshman Shelby Cansler and a pair of free-throws from junior Erin McGowan to win by six, 41-35.

Bellevue faced off against Franklin at Bellevue College, with the winner receiving an automatic trip to state.  Bellevue turned the ball over nine times in the first quarter but was still able to maintain the lead behind six points from freshman Shelby Cansler.  Franklin senior Raven Burleson kept them in the contest with two three pointers in the first to cut the Wolverine lead to two, 12-10.

In the second quarter, the Wolverines were able to control the interior, led by freshman Mackenzie Keeter with six points.  The Wolverine defense forced six Quaker turnovers and only allowed seven points in the second quarter.  Bellevue extended their lead to 28-17 at the half.

Bellevue’s defense was again stifling in the third, allowing only eight points and forcing six more turnovers.  Five Wolverines scored in the quarter to extend their lead to 40-25 at the end of the third.

The offenses for both teams took over in the fourth quarter, with both teams exploding for a combined 41 points in the period.  Bellevue never let the game get closer than 15 points in the fourth, holding on to the lead they built in the first three quarters.  Seven Wolverines scored in the fourth as Bellevue won 62-44.

Bellevue will now face Seattle Prep at Bellevue College on Thursday at 4:45 pm.  Franklin will face Holy Names in a loser out game on Friday at Bellevue College at 4:45 pm.

Bellevue handed Mercer Island their first loss to a Washington state team on Friday night with a 51-50 shocker at Bellevue High.  This rivalry game had a much slower pace than expected, with full half court sets, good passing, and great offensive execution overall.  Mercer Island took the lead in the first quarter by sinking three contested three-pointers, but this fine shooting did not seem to phase Bellevue.  The Wolverines continued to grind and maintained great defensive intensity.  They cut the five point lead at the end of the first to just one at the half on a great three point bank shot at the buzzer by Michael Carlson.

The third quarter maintained a slower, meticulous basketball pace.  Bellevue continued to execute offensively, while Mercer Island settled for mid-range to deep jump shots, not attacking the hoop like they did in the first half.

Bellevue turned up their defensive intensity in the second half, doing a great job of stepping into passing lanes and converting in transition.  The Wolverines took a one point lead at the end of the third quarter, and maintained that lead deep into the fourth quarter, exchanging baskets with the Islanders.  With 24 seconds left, Bellevue held a one point lead and the Islanders had the ball, shot clock turned off.  The drawn up play seemed to break down via Bellevue’s defensive intensity and the Wolverines forced Mercer Island into a deep three that was right on target, but inches long.

Bellevue sealed the victory, 51-50.
