A clash of elite scorers told the story in a 2A winner-to-state match-up between Mark Morris and Ellensburg. Coleman Sparlings game-high 34 points proved enough to lead the Bulldogs past a 32 point effort by Monarchs junior Will Burghardt. The Monarchs carried a slim lead into the intermission through an increasingly emphasized defensive effort as the first half wore on.
It appeared this game was headed for a close finish as the second half progressed. However, Ellensburg put that possibility to bed when Bryce Helgeson, Trey Bennett, and Sparling put together a run that caught the Monarchs off guard. This put Bill Bakamus in a coaching situation where they needed to foul the Bulldogs and hope they could catch up by slowing the game down. Ellensburg didn’t waver and was able to stave off Mark Morris for a comfortable win.
After the game, Bulldogs coach Del Enders talked about their game plan down the stretch which included “speeding them up, forcing them to take quick shots; quick rebounds, and that just plays right into it then they have to foul us.” In regards to Sparling’s big time performance, Enders said, “He would not be denied. 19 points in the first half, all kinds of rebounds.” As Ellensburg prepares for the state finals, the Bulldogs will focus on free throw shooting considering “throughout the game, especially on one-and-ones, we’re notorious for leaving the front end.”
The Final Score
Ellensburg 70, Mark Morris 59.

The Mark Morris Monarchs have taken one step closer to repeating as state champs by defeating the Toppenish Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in regional round play. Their balanced attack included four double digit scorers with Brooke Walling, Libby Bartleson, Zsaleh Parvas, and Alexis Troy recording 18, 14, and a dozen apiece respectively.
After facing an eight point deficit at halftime, Jenni Johnson (23 points, 6 rebound, 6 steals) and Janealle Sutterlict (13 points, 5 steals) led a third quarter charge that brought the Wildcats within a single bucket heading into the final quarter. Could Toppenish take the lead?
Midway through the final quarter, Parvas knocked down a three pointer following a blocked shot and outlet pass. She was fouled in the process and the bucket seemed to remove any remaining momentum the Cats still held. With the victory, Mark Morris will vie for back-to-back titles next weekend.
The Final Score
Mark Morris 65, Toppenish 55.

In part two of our interview with Coach Bill Bakamus from Mark Morris, we talk about the community impact of his basketball program. He describes traditions on game night such as honoring someone before each game such as an alumnus or teacher in which they pick up “the gavel” and they “pound the middle of the floor and our announcer then says, ‘The king’s court is now in session!'”
The Monarchs’ involvement in the community is focused on giving back to those that are less fortunate including providing basic necessities during the holidays and helping people with yard work. He tells his players it is a part of showing thanks for everything they receive as high school athletes including uniforms, funds for trips, etc.
We close out the interview by talking about his character development philosophies as a coach. The skills he tries to impart on his student-athletes embodies his claim that, “There’s just a certain expectation we have as being a Mark Morris basketball player.”

Steve Dion had a chance to catch up with head coach of the Mark Morris Monarchs Bill Bakamus whose team is atop the 2A GSHL standings. In the first of a two-part interview, he talks about his 2015-2016 team and the challenge of maintaining a dominant program year after year.
When asked about the makeup of this year’s Monarchs squad, Coach Bakamus states, “We start with a backcourt that is very experienced and then our front court is not. So it has been a work in progress trying to get everybody on the same page.” For a league that has a high level of parity, it has required hard work to maintain their first place position in the standings.
He goes on to mention his key to sustaining a successful basketball program is “I’ve always tried to surround myself with great people and people I want to be around.” Listen to the full segment as well as part two for more about one of the great basketball schools in Washington!

Lady Monarchs Sting Hornets in ShoWare Shootout
By Steven Dion
Steve Rooklidge and his Mark Morris squad had plans to make their two hour trek north to Kent from Longview worthwhile at the ShoWare Shootout against White River from the SPSL. The Monarchs wasted no time finding their groove as their pesky defense caused numerous turnovers leading to transition buckets. The ball movement by Mark Morris was phenomenal throughout the entire contest; making the extra pass, finding the open shooter. After one frame, Mark Morris built a seven point lead. White River certainly knew their size disadvantage going into this game would create matchup problems throughout and they would have to find other ways to battle the Monarchs. Unfortunately, Mark Morris’ sizzling shooting continued through the rest of the first half. Going into the break, the Hornets trailed by eighteen points.
MMHS picked up where they left off in the second half as their jump-shots continued to fall and the stops on the defensive end led to high percentage shot in the frontcourt. Coach Rooklidge said he was pleased and even surprised how well his team was able to execute on both sides of the floor. Their ability to handle a talented White River team the way they did is a testament to an experienced Greater St. Helens League frontrunner. Both teams were able to finish with four players in double-digit scoring. However, the Eaton duo of Mark Morris both registered double-doubles as Kourtney knocked down 16 points and 11 assists while Karley scored 21 and grabbed 11 rebounds. Final score 75-53 in favor of the Monarchs.
