Garfield Handles Newport for Second Time
By Colin Caruso
Good news came to the Newport Knights Friday night when they heard the news of second leading scorer Brayon Blake for the Garfield Bulldogs would not play. This could be their opportunity to conquer the mighty undefeated Bulldogs, who trounced the Knights by 25 earlier this year. Unfortunately for the Knights their leading scorer, senior leader, and captain, Will Ferris, accumulated three fouls in the first four minutes of the contest and had to sit the rest of the first half. At this point in the game, Newport looked strong, leading 9-4 and controlling the pace of the game. After Ferris sat, the Bulldogs closed the quarter on a 16-2 run.
Garfield continued to pressure the Knights on the defensive end; with their quickness and off-ball screens, the Bulldogs were able to extend their lead to 12 at the half.
The game opened up in the second half, with Ferris coming back in and picking up an early foul in the third, forcing him to sit again. This is when the Bulldogs put together another big run. Garfield outscored Newport 18-11 in the third, led by Tramaine Isabell and freshman Jaylen Nowell. With a 19 point lead going into the fourth on their home floor, Garfield cruised to a final of 77-60 to remain undefeated on the season. Newport is still looking for their first league win.
