Friday night at Lakeside High School showcased a double-dip of varsity hoops as the host Lions squared off against the Garfield Bulldogs. This clash of strong metro league squads opened in an unusual way with Garfield leading 2-0 before the game started. That’s right, a clerical error on the Lakeside scorebook provided Garfield with two free throws without any time elapsing. The Bulldogs carried a lead for most of the first quarter until LHS began an extended run that continued for the remainder of the first half. Kallin Spiller’s four buckets from downtown helped the Lions grab a 30-17 lead at the break.

Garfield was able to string together a handful of point bursts to trim Lakeside’s lead. Samiyah Tolliver led the GHS cause with a dozen points overall. However, Kimijah King answered the call when the Garfield deficit shrunk. In his postgame comments, Coach Chinn said, “having some poise down at the end, we had a freshman out there Alex Friends who I thought did a great job converting” when the Bulldogs made second half runs. Lakeside’s ability to control the tempo through the majority of the contest earned them a valuable league win.
