Bainbridge Girls Pick Up Road Win Against Quakers
By Steven Dion
The phrase “Games Are Won In the Fourth Quarter” apply to many basketball games, but when a team jumps out of the gate firing on all cylinders, the result can be decided much sooner. The Bainbridge Lady Spartans’ balanced attack and opportunistic defense gave Franklin everything it could handle Friday night in downtown Seattle. Bainbridge’s 18-5 lead after one quarter of play was facilitated by a pair of triples by freshman sharpshooter Taylor Tye and second-chance scoring opportunities by Katie Usellis’ relentless rebounding. Holding Franklin to twelve points in the first half is a testament to Spartan head coach Nicole Hebner’s ability to utilize her deep bench and maintain fresh legs on the floor.
The second half featured more of what was seen in the first sixteen minutes of play as the Quakers were unable to get into a shooting groove and also allowed transition buckets by the opponent. However, Franklin showed resilience by putting together a respectable fourth quarter by matching Bainbridge with 14 points. FHS sophomore Tamia Spellman buried a three and knocked down a pair of free throws in the frame. When the horn sounded, Bainbridge Island sailed off with a 53-31 victory. Three BIHS players finished with a dozen points: Paige Brigham, Katie Usellis, and Taylor Tye.
