Head Coach Christian Swain joined Curt Warner after the win to talk about Evergreen’s defensive effort, the areas that still need work and what it will take for the Planesmen to keep improving.

Evergreen walked away with another victory and improved to 4-1 on the season, but Head Coach Christian Swain made it clear there is still plenty of work ahead.

Following the game, Swain joined Curt Warner and praised a defensive performance that produced a shutout.

“Defensively we played really well. Obviously, getting the shutout, I’m really proud of that.”

Swain pointed specifically to Evergreen’s ability to stop the run and improved tackling — two areas the Planesmen have emphasized in practice.

Offensively, however, Swain wasn’t nearly as satisfied.

Penalties, protection breakdowns and missed execution stalled several drives and prevented Evergreen from playing the complete game its coach knows the team is capable of.

“We’re a lot better than we played tonight on offense.”

Swain said the Planesmen need to eliminate unnecessary holding penalties, improve technique and clean up mistakes on the perimeter if they want to compete successfully against stronger opponents.

Warner came away impressed by both Evergreen’s quarterback play and a defense that consistently stepped up when needed.

The Planesmen leave with another win — but perhaps more importantly, with a clear understanding of what needs to improve.

At 4-1, Evergreen continues to build momentum while raising the standard for what comes next.
