The Archbishop Murphy Wildcats entered the 2A State Championship with one mission: complete their perfect season and settle the score with the Tumwater Thunderbirds after last year’s semifinal heartbreak. And they delivered—electrifying from start to finish.
The Wildcats controlled the game early, building a commanding 21-7 lead through three quarters with a balanced, disciplined attack. But Tumwater wasn’t going down quietly. The Thunderbirds mounted a fierce fourth-quarter rally, punching in 13 points and turning up the pressure in the final minutes. Still, the red-hot Wildcats held strong, sealing their historic, undefeated season with a state title victory.
Tumwater standout Jaxon Budd threw for 82 yards and two touchdowns, with WR Wyatt Chase hauling in three catches for 66 yards and a score. For the Wildcats, QB Evan Ruiz was efficient and effective, throwing just under 100 yards on 5-of-8 passing with two touchdowns. RB Isaiah Smith was unstoppable, rumbling for 169 yards on 16 carries and finding the end zone twice.
