Roller Coaster in Renton
By Steven Dion

A sunny September evening at Renton Memorial Stadium hosted a gridiron shootout between two non-conference teams in Decatur and Renton. This contest was a tale of two halves until a late momentum swing decided the victor. The first quarter got off to a slow start as the only scoring threat was thwarted immediately as a 60-yard pass to Decatur’s Isaiah Diggs was fumbled at the 5 yard line. Indians linebacker DaSsaun Sauls ripped the ball loose before the Gator speedster was able to bust into the end zone. But, Decatur could only keep Diggs off the scoreboard for so long as he recorded two scores in the second frame. Both extra points were blocked by Renton special teams, so the Gators took a 12-0 lead into the locker room.

Decatur picked up where they left off in the second half by feeding Diggs until he slashed his way into the end zone for the third time. The shifty runner recorded 24 carries for 145 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns in addition to 8 receptions for 213 yards with a receiving score. He picked up loads of yards after contact and the game appeared to be over when the Gators took an 18-0 lead in the third. But after failing to convert on a fake punt, Renton got on the scoreboard from an Ernie Davis touchdown. Then another. Then another. Then another. That’s right, four unanswered scores by Davis to give Renton a 28-18 lead late in the fourth quarter. Somehow, Decatur put together a touchdown drive to put them within 4 after a failed 2-point conversion. On the ensuing kickoff with 1:33 remaining, Diggs recovered the onside kick for Decatur. The first Gator play from scrimmage was a touchdown pass from near midfield to Diggs which deflated the Indians. An interception on a last-chance drive by Renton sealed the deal and finally ended this see-saw ride. Despite the loss, Ernie Davis shined in this contest scoring four touchdowns and nearly willing his team to an improbable comeback.

Auburn Riverside Shuts Out Kentridge
By Colin Caruso

On a beautiful evening in Kent, Wa. the Kentridge Chargers hosted the Auburn Riverside Ravens on French Field in front of a great crowd. The Ravens, dominate all game, started offensively in the spread and moved the ball seamlessly down the field to score the first touchdown of the game. The Kentridge defense was no match for the Ravens’ offensive line, with quarterback Alex Riley having tons of time to pick apart the Charger secondary. However, the Charger defense benefited on penalties in the next two drives and held the Ravens to no points for the remainder of the first.

Auburn Riverside coach Bryant Thomas made a strong offensive adjustment after those two straight scoreless drives. Instead of the spread offense they moved to the “I” formation and the pistol to run the ball with more of a power feel. This worked spectacularly well, with two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter and a pick-six, the Ravens took a 26-0 lead into the locker room at half. The lead was made possible through sound offense and a stifling Raven defense.

The Ravens allowed just 27 total yards in the first half, only to be topped by allowing 17 yards in the second half. Kentridge moved into Raven territory twice, but once was on a kickoff return and the other was through multiple penalties. An amazing performance by the Ravens defense against the run in the second half led the Chargers to a -12 yard rushing total after halftime. The Charger defense stepped up as well, not allowing any points in the second half. The game had a blowout feel, but no scoring in the second half led to a 26-0 finish in favor of Auburn Riverside.

Top Performers:

QB Alex Riley – 13-24 137 yds, 2 rushing TDs
RB Cole Huckaby – 11 carries, 88 yards
WR Gavin Hettinger – 4 catches, 64 yards

Bellevue Rolls Over Skyline
By Colin Caruso

The Emerald City Kickoff Classic nightcap saw the Washington state 3A and 4A champions clash in Husky Stadium. Bellevue has won the past five 3A state championships, and Skyline has won four of the last five 4A state championships, a clear clash of the titans. Bellevue came to play early and seemingly caught the 4A state champs off guard, capitalizing on one costly turnover deep in Skyline’s territory and scoring on two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter.

Missed tackles for the Spartans capped off a tough second quarter for Skyline, who found themselves down 35-0 on two more Bellevue rushing touchdowns and one passing touchdown from Timmy Haehl to Marek Spooner. The team speed discrepancy was very apparent from the onset of this game; it seemed as if Bellevue was in a different gear for the first 24 minutes of this contest.

Skyline began to move the football more in the third quarter, putting together a couple of good drives and moving into Bellevue territory. The Wolverine defense bent a little bit in the third but did not break, and Bellevue added a field goal in the quarter to go into the fourth up 38-0.

Both teams began using reserve players in the fourth, as the game was already well over by half. Skyline managed to get on the board late in the quarter, on a long run by Kilton Anderson. Bellevue also added a touchdown in the quarter, and sealed the victory 45-7.

Top Performers:

Bothell Beats Idaho’s Finest in a Shootout
By Colin Caruso

Bothell kicked off their 2013 season about as well as you could, receiving the opening kick from the Coeur d’Alene Vikings and returning it 88 yards for a touchdown. Needless to say, Coeur d’Alene was caught a little off guard from their five plus hour bus ride to Western Washington earlier in the morning. But their woes ended quickly, with three drives leading to 24 unanswered points to take the lead 24-7 early in the second.

Bothell needed a response from their offense who had yet to put points on the board, and received it just two minutes later with a 70 yard drive and a passing touchdown from Ross Bowers to Dayzell Wilson to cut the lead to 10. But the Vikings again responded with a touchdown, to take the lead 30-14 into halftime.

The Cougars came out strong to start the third quarter, putting up an early touchdown and two point conversion to cut the lead to 30-22. Bothell forced a three and out on the Vikings next possession and put together another touchdown drive, capped off by another touchdown catch by Dayzell Wilson and a successful two point try to tie the game at 30. Coeur d’Alene answered with a touchdown catch from UW recruit Chase Blakley to close the third quarter with the lead, 37-30.

Coeur d’Alene scored first in the fourth as well; a TD run from Drew Berger and a failed two point try to take the lead 43-30. Down two scores with just ten minutes to play, Bothell seemed hard pressed to post another double digit comeback. But the Cougars responded with 2:39 to play, Damani St. John dove in the end zone after a 12 play drive to cut the lead to six, 43-37. Bothell forced a three and out and on their next offensive play, quarterback Ross Bowers launched a 39 yard pass to the corner of the end zone that was caught by Colton Sather. After the PAT, Bothell tasted their first lead of the game at 44-43 with 1:50 left. Coeur d’Alene still had plenty of time to put together a drive, but Dayzell Wilson forced a fumble on a deep reception and sealed the amazing comeback win for the Cougars.

Lynden Avenges Only Loss from Last Season
By Colin Caruso

In the second contest at Husky Stadium for the Emerald City Kickoff Classic the King’s Knights took on the Lynden Lions. Lynden won the 2A state championship last season but suffered one loss on the year, to these Knights.

King’s received the kickoff and put together a long opening series drive, taking over 6 minutes off the clock, but fell inches short on a fourth down run to turn the ball over on downs. Lynden responded with a 4:30 drive of their own and an excellent touchdown pass from Lucas Petersen to Jalani Phelps to take the lead 7-0. Lynden continued to drive the football offensively, giving their kicker a field goal opportunity later in the second quarter, but it missed just left. The Lions kept up the defensive pressure as well, not allowing King’s to find any cohesiveness on offense in the first half.

Lynden forced a three and out late in the second quarter and capitalized at the end of their ensuing drive with a 2 yard touchdown run by junior Trent Postma to go ahead 14-0 at half.

The Knights began to move the ball with more efficiency in the second half, putting together longer drives and scoring opportunities. Their first legitimate scoring chance came early in the fourth, where they earned a first down inside the Lynden 20 yard line. But Lynden’s defense held tight again, and forced another turnover on downs. King’s found another opportunity in the waning moments of the contest and converted a ten yard touchdown pass from Corey Kispert to Jordan Turner, but it was too little too late, as the Lions avenged their loss from last season and won the opener 14-6.

Blanchet Rolls Over Ballard
By Colin Caruso

The first game of the Emerald City Kickoff Classic hosted the Seattle Prep Panthers and the Roosevelt Roughriders, a 3A-4A matchup. Neither team was able to exert themselves offensively in the first quarter, with neither team attempting a single pass.

Roosevelt, in strictly the Wing-T, was able to move the ball relatively well in the second quarter, but was unable to crack inside the Panther 25 until 6:10 remaining in the second. An inside handoff to Roughrider running back Bereket Anshebo turned into a touchdown after a few nifty moves and a broken tackle, to take the lead 7-0.

A blocked punt by Roosevelt with 3:02 left in the second gave the Roughriders the ball on the Seattle Prep 1 yard line, but two penalties pushed them back to the 18. Roosevelt had to settle for a field goal attempt that was missed right, a huge break for the Panthers, who were down just 7-0 at the half.

The second half spelled equal trouble for the Panthers offense, which couldn’t break through the Roughrider defense to put any points on the board. Roosevelt pitched a full game shutout to send the Panthers to 1-1 in their history at the Kickoff Classic. Coach Nelson for the Roughriders mentioned after the game that Prep came out with a different offense than they had initially expected, but credited his players for making the adjustment and shutting out the Panthers, 7-0.

Blanchet Rolls Over Ballard
By Colin Caruso

In both team’s opener, the Blanchet Braves dominated the Ballard Beavers by a final of 43-0. Blanchet started early and kept the pressure on Ballard for the entire game. The Braves’ first play from scrimmage was a halfback pass that went for 48 yards, followed by a 12 yard touchdown run by senior running back Chamroeun Pen. On the next Braves drive, quarterback Alex Freeman hooked up with senior wide receiver Greg Petschl for a 6 yard touchdown catch. The Braves took an early 14-0 lead, less than 5 minutes into the contest.

Both team’s defenses picked up the pressure for the remainder of the first quarter and the first ten minutes of the second quarter, until Blanchet found themselves on the right side of a few favorable plays. A Blanchet reception on the sideline followed by a clear tackle was missed by the official, and the Braves receiver got up from the tackle and ran for an additional 35 yards on the play. Two plays later, a fumble on the goal line that was picked up by Ballard was overturned and called down by contact. Blanchet running back Oshea Trujillo ran the ball in the next play, to send the score to 20-0 at the half.

Despite being down 20 points going into half, Ballard was competitive and the line of scrimmage battle was equal. Neither team showed great success moving the football, but mistakes by the Beavers put this game out of reach. The opening kickoff of the second half was fumbled by Ballard and returned for a touchdown. The next two offensive plays for the Beavers also resulted in fumbles, one of which again returned for a touchdown, and the other giving Blanchet great field position to capitalize on a field goal. Amazingly, Blanchet had 18 yards of offense in the third quarter, but scored 23 points, to seal the game at 43-0.

Skyline vs. Bellevue

Kickoff Classic Preview: Skyline vs. Bellevue
By Colin Caruso

To close the evening, the Emerald City Kickoff Classic brought in the two best teams in Washington, a matchup between the 4A Skyline Spartans and the 3A Bellevue Wolverines.  Bellevue has claimed the 3A state crown in 10 of the last 12 seasons, and hasn’t lost a game since 2010.  Their last loss came to these Skyline Spartans.  Coach Mat Taylor and the Spartans have raised the 4A state trophy in four of the last five seasons, and are looking to avenge their 2011 loss to the Wolverines.  This game is not only for ‘Eastside’ bragging rights, but for state bragging rights, as both of these teams are looking to repeat in 2013.

These series of games will be the second set of games in newly renovated Husky Stadium following the Husky opener last Saturday, Aug 31st, in the Dawg’s rout over Boise State. The Skyline – Bellevue game will kick off at 7pm, Saturday Sept 7th. Tickets are $15 at the door and $10 for seniors and students. Good luck to both of our defending state champions!

Coeur d’Alene vs. Bothell

Kickoff Classic Preview: Coeur d’Alene vs. Bothell
By Colin Caruso

The third matchup in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic will be a cross-state contest between the Bothell Cougars and Coeur d’Alene.  Bothell was a state semifinal team in 2009 and a quarterfinal team in 2010.  This is their third trip to the Emerald City Kickoff Classic.  Coeur d’Alene is making their second trip to the Classic, coming off a win two years ago versus Moses Lake.  Coeur d’Alene were the state runner-ups last year in Idaho’s largest classification (5A) and were the state champions in both 2010 and 2011.

These series of games will be the second set of games in newly renovated Husky Stadium following the Husky opener last Saturday, Aug 31st, in the Dawg’s rout over Boise State. The Bothell – Coeur d’Alene game will kick off at 4pm, Saturday Sept 7th. Tickets are $15 at the door and $10 for seniors and students. This will be a tough matchup for the Bothell, who are going against one of the top teams in Idaho over the last few years.

By Colin Caruso

The second contest in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic will be between the defending 2A champions the Lynden Lions and the only team that took them down in the regular season in 2012, the King’s Knights.  Lynden has dominated the 2A classification recently, winning five of the last seven state titles with head coach Curt Kramme at the helm.  The Lions will be looking to avenge their only regular season defeat last year, which came to the 1A King’s Knights.  King’s made a great run in 2012, reaching the state quarterfinals but losing to the eventual champion Montesano.

These series of games in the Kickoff Classic will be the second set of games in newly renovated Husky Stadium following the Husky opener last Saturday, Aug 31st, in the Dawg’s rout over Boise State. The Lynden – King’s game will take place at 1pm, Saturday Sept 7th. Tickets are $15 at the door and $10 for seniors and students. This will be a great matchup between two teams looking to make a deep run in state in their respective classifications in 2013!

Rainier Beach Wins 3A Boys State Championship, Conquers Lakeside for
Third Time this Season
By Colin Caruso

In their fourth matchup of the season, with the season series 2-1 in favor of the Vikings, the Lakeside Lions and the Rainier Beach Vikings faced off for the third and most valuable championship of the season. Beach won the Metro title, Lakeside won the district title, and this one was for all the marbles, lifting the state championship trophy in the Tacoma Dome.

Beach scored the first four points of the game, but Lakeside answered with a quick 7-0 run, sparked by five points from junior D’Marques Tyson. The remainder of the quarter was played close; these two teams are so familiar with each other it would be tough to expect big runs from either team. Elijah Foster for the Vikings had the quarter high with eight, and Beach took a 16-14 lead into the second.

The Vikings began the second with a 7-0 run, increasing the speed in the contest and capitalizing on costly Lakeside turnovers. Star Shaqquan Aaron for the Vikings heated up in the quarter, knocking down two three pointers to lead the Vikings to a 32-26 half.

Beach scored the first five points in the third but Lakeside quickly responded with an 11-0 run to tie the gamenbehind six points from senior Matthew Poplawski, his first points of the contest. The teams exchanged baskets to end the quarter with Beach taking a one point lead into the fourth.

Lakeside took an early lead in the fourth, but Elijah Foster came up big again for the Vikings scoring four straight to put Beach up one with 3:18 remaining. Tyson answered with a three with three minutes remaining to put Lakeside up two, and Poplawski added a layup to go up four with two minutes on the clock.

A pair of free-throws by Naim Ladd from Beach trimmed Lakeside’s lead to just two, but Isabell responded for the Lions with a dribble drive layup with 1:08 on the clock to extend the lead to four, 56-52. Will Dorsey for the Vikings scored the next four points in the contest, knocking down two free throws and finishing on a spectacular layup to tie the game with 5.6 remaining.

Isabell caught the ensuing inbounds pass and drove right down the middle of the floor and was fouled but missed the front end with 1.6 remaining, sending the game to overtime.

Dorsey added four points in the overtime and Lakeside continued to struggle from the line, which came down to the difference in this game. Lakeside shot just 9/16 from the line in the game to Beach’s 18/24, and Beach pulled out the win, 62-59 in overtime. Congratulations to the back to back champions!

Curtis Wins 4A State Crown in their Backyard,
Gives Undefeated Jackson their First Loss
By Colin Caruso

With electric crowds from both schools present, the undefeated Jackson Timberwolves took on the Curtis Vikings for the 4A boys state title. Curtis started strong, forcing three early turnovers and turning those into transition baskets to begin the contest on an 11-4 run. With nine first quarter points from junior Brian Zehr, Jackson was able to trim the Curtis lead to two points after the first.

Curtis jumped out to a 21-11 lead in the second, stemmed by an 8-0 run to start the quarter. Five Vikings scored in the quarter to extend their lead to 32-19 at half.

Jackson needed a run early in the third and the Timberwolves responded. Jackson was able to trim the lead to six points in the middle of the quarter and closed the quarter down nine, 42-33.

With a comfortable nine point lead, the Vikings began to slow their pace of play and exhaust more time. This turned out to be counterproductive for the Vikings, as Jackson came out on an 11-2 run in the fourth, and eventually took a two point lead in the quarter. But Andre Lewis and Isom Brown would not back down for the Vikings, scoring 11 points as a pair in the fourth and extending the Curtis lead to three.

The Timberwolves had a chance with eight seconds left to tie the game with a three, but couldn’t secure the ball and turned it over to the Vikings, who sealed the contest with a free-throw. Congratulations to Curtis who held on for an amazing win!

Boys 3A State Tournament Preview
By Colin Caruso

In a Seattle-heavy 3A boys class state tournament, and a rematch of the last year’s state finals in the first round, we have great games from top to bottom in the afternoon and evening on Thursday in Tacoma.  Here is a preview of the 3A boys state tournament:

Franklin vs. Timberline – 3:45PM

Franklin advanced to the final eight as the four seed from the Sea-King district, with a big win versus Stanwood in the round of sixteen.  Their schedule has been one of the most challenging in the state of Washington, with six games versus teams in the final eight of the 3A tournament and a game versus rival Garfield, the #1 seed in the 4A tournament.  The Quakers were only 2-5 against these teams, but I would not sleep on them.  Coach Kerr has years of experience playing in Tacoma, and seniors Arell Hennings and Patrick Ball will not go down easy.

Timberline began the year at 1-3, not the typical starting record for a team in the final eight of the state tournament.  The Blazers are probably grateful they are not matched up against Lincoln this round, who has had their number all season, defeating the Blazers three times.  Timberline is led by one of the most talented players in the state, junior Donaven Dorsey, who leads the Blazers in scoring and is a threat from both the interior and the perimeter.  Both of these teams like to play an open, free flowing game, great for state tournament action!

Rainier Beach vs. Seattle Preparatory – 5:30PM

Two teams in Washington State have knocked off the Rainier Beach Vikings this year, Lakeside, and the Seattle Prep Panthers.  Seattle Prep took down the Vikings at home with a two point win more than two months ago.  Every other league game for the Vikings was a double digit victory, beating the likes of Franklin, and Lakeside.  Beach is one of the deepest teams in the state, with great talent and size at every position.  Their number one prospect is junior Shaqquan Aaron who averages 18.9 per game; who recently expressed interest in attending Louisville, but any of their rotating players can take over the scoring duties and elevate the Vikings to victory.

The Panthers saw the Vikings last year in the 3A state final, with the Vikings pulling out a narrow victory to claim the title, 61-58.  Prep Coach Mike Kelly does not want the Vikings to end their season again this year, and neither does their senior scoring leader DJ Fenner.  Fenner is an all-state player, a great athlete and an excellent mid-range jump shooter.  Fenner averages 28.2 ppg and will play for Nevada next season.  He will need to show up and play huge on Thursday to send Prep onto the next round.

Lincoln vs. Mountlake Terrace – 7:15PM

These two teams faced off two and a half months ago in an out of conference matchup at Highline Community College, with the Lincoln Abes squeezing out a one point win, 60-59.  Lincoln comes into this matchup hot, winning their last six games and winning both the 3A Narrows league title and the West Central district title.

Mountlake Terrace comes in on a tear as well, with their only loss in the last 11 games coming in the District 1 tournament final to Stanwood.  Mountlake Terrace’s only losses all year came to teams in the final 16, including the Abes, Stanwood, and Glacier Peak.  This should be a great matchup of conflicting styles, with Lincoln looking to push the pace and get out in transition and Mountlake Terrace favoring half court sets and interior buckets.

University vs. Lakeside – 9:00PM

This is a very compelling matchup, as University plays in the GSL and is the #1 ranked 3A team in their district, and Lakeside is coming off one of the biggest wins in program history with a district title win over Rainier Beach.  Lakeside has a formidable resume, with wins over all three of the remaining Seattle schools in boys 3A basketball, Franklin, Beach, and Prep.  They are led by two juniors, D’Marques Tyson and Tramaine Isabell, averaging 14.2 and 18.6 respectively.  Tyson is more of a perimeter player and Isabell is one of the quickest players and best basket attackers in the state of Washington.

University is coming off three straight wins, most recently over Enumclaw in the round of 16.  Their struggles with Shadle Park pose potential problems with this matchup against Lakeside, as Shadle Park’s last contest ended in a 34 point rout by Seattle Prep.  Lakeside has won their last three contests versus Seattle Prep this season.  Will University be able to pull the upset and knock off the Sea-King district champs?

Boys 4A State Tournament Preview
By Colin Caruso

There are a number of compelling games in the Washington State boys 4A tournament final eight, including teams from all over the state and rematches from previous games this season.  Here are the match-ups:

Newport vs. Curtis – 9:00AM

Newport has worked hard and has clawed its way back into contention for the a state title after losing four straight games towards the end of January and early February to Ballard, Issaquah, and Bothell twice.  They advanced to the round of 16 in a win and in-game versus Mount Vernon, and made it to the final eight through a tough, defensive battle in Wenatchee versus Eastmont.  Their athleticism and strength creates matchup problems for every team remaining in Washington State.

On the flip side, the Curtis Vikings have dominated this season and are currently ranked #4 in the state.  Their only losses have been to Federal Way and Spanaway Lake, and their big wins include a big win against Bellarmine Prep in their district final and a convincing 61-48 win versus Thomas Jefferson to reach the final eight.  The Vikings are led by two senior starters, Dominic Robinson and Andre Lewis, who average 13.9 points and 13.8 points respectively.

Bothell vs Garfield – 10:30AM

The Bothell Cougars have only three losses this entire season.  Unfortunately, two of those losses were to Garfield, and neither game was close.  The first contest was during the regular season, where the Garfield Bulldogs took down the Cougars by 15.  The second matchup was in their district final, where Garfield senior Tucker Haymond scored 20 of his game high 39 in the first quarter in a dominating 93-69 win.  It is always difficult to beat a team three times, especially a team with division one talent like the Cougars possess.  Bothell senior Perrion Callandret will be attending Idaho next season, and Zach LaVine, the #1 senior recruit in the state, will take his talents to UCLA.

Will Garfield complete the season sweep of the Cougars?  Or will the Cougars avenge their earlier season losses and advance to the final four?  We’ll find out early Thursday morning.

Arlington vs. Richland – 12:45 PM

Both of these teams have dominated their opponents for the majority of the season, but both teams have suffered big losses to teams still remaining in the 4A tournament.  Richland travelled to Spokane for a matchup against the Central Valley Bears and struggled in a 68-44 loss.  They did avenge that loss later in the season, just two weeks ago with a 66-54 win versus the Bears.  Arlington has suffered two losses to the undefeated Jackson Timberwolves this season, both by double digits.

In the round of sixteen, Richland dominated Stadium 68-39 in a game that was essentially over in the first quarter.  Arlington scored a big win over late surging Bellarmine Prep, 58-47 in the round of sixteen to advance to Tacoma.  This will be a great matchup between two teams from opposite sides of the state looking to make a huge impact on the 4A class.

Jackson vs. Central Valley – 2:00PM

With a combined record of 46-2, this is the matchup of the teams with the best records in 4A boys basketball.  The Jackson Timberwolves have yet to hiccup all season, completing the year with a perfect 24-0 record.  They are led by three very talented juniors, Dan Kingma, Jason Todd, and Brian Zehr.  With six wins coming in single digits this season, the Timberwolves are used to battling in close games versus all-state level talent.

Central Valley poses a big threat to Jackson’s undefeated season.  The Bears are led by senior Austin Rehkow and junior big man Beau Byus, who average 15.1 and 13.7 ppg respectively.  Their only two losses this season were at Richland and at Gonzaga Prep, both formidable opponents with strong programs.  Central Valley won a nail-biter in overtime against a very talented Todd Beamer team in the round of 16 to advance to this game, and Coach Rick Sloan and company are looking to extend their stay on the west side of the state with a win on Thursday.

Bothell comes out Strong Versus Bethel, Advances to Final Eight
By Colin Caruso

In the late game at Rogers High School, with a trip to Tacoma at stake, the Bothell Cougars faced off against the Bethel Braves.  The Bethel band, playing the likes of Kansas, War and Journey kept the fans grooving during timeouts and halftime in this win and advance, loser out game.

The game started with a flash of athleticism from the Cougars.  Bothell collected the tip and threw a half court alley-oop to LaVine for an emphatic dunk in the opening seconds of the contest.  The Cougars had the opportunity to put a big lead in the books in the first quarter, but two missed dunks led to just a four point lead going into the second.

Bethel needed a strong second to put pressure on the Cougars during halftime, but six turnovers and only five points in the quarter allowed Bothell to continue to play their free flowing style.  Bothell took a 30-20 lead into halftime.

Bothell continued to grind in the third behind junior Josh Martin.  Martin filled the stat sheet for the Cougars with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals in the third.

The Bothell lead ballooned to as many as 19 in the final quarter.  Bethel trimmed the lead to single digits, led by junior James Moore and his nine fourth quarter points.  But Bothell, in control the entire game, closed out the contest strong and won by 12, 61-49.

Top Performers:
Bothell
Josh Martin (15 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 blocks, 3 assists)
Perrion Callandret (19 points, 4 assists, 3 steals)

Central Valley holds off Todd Beamer in Overtime, Books their Ticket to Tacoma

Central Valley holds off Todd Beamer in Overtime, Books their Ticket to Tacoma
By Colin Caruso

In this winner to Tacoma, loser out contest, the Todd Beamer Titans clashed with the Central Valley Bears in the 4pm game at Rogers High School.  The Central Valley band kept the crowd enthused during timeouts and halftime; they brought great energy from Spokane.

Central Valley jumped on Todd Beamer immediately following the tip-off.  The Bears started the game on 10-0 run, sprung by two three pointers from senior Austin Rehkow in the first three minutes of the contest.

Todd Beamer was caught off guard by the run; Central Valley played with more energy and completely controlled the glass, recording six offensive rebounds in the quarter.

The Titans began their comeback mid-way through the second, sparked by back to back baskets by junior Michael Stansberry.  Beamer’s outside looks began to fall, and Central Valley’s three point looks were just inches off.

Beamer took the momentum into the locker room down seven, 30-23.

Beamer continued to chip away at the Central Valley lead in the second half.  A layup by Stansberry cut the Bears lead to just three, but the Bears responded with a quick layup of their own and a three by Rehkow to extend the lead back to eight.

In the final quarter, Beamer again came out with great intensity, led by Burch-Manning who converted on two quick baskets to cut the lead to three with five minutes to play.

Titan senior Juwan Flowers continued the run and added two free-throws and a three pointer with 1:33 remaining to give Todd Beamer their first lead of the contest, 53-51.  Bears junior Adam Chamberlain answered from the line, hitting a pair of free-throws to tie the game at 53.

Todd Beamer would have one more shot at the buzzer in the fourth, but it fell short to send the game to overtime.

The Titans scored first in overtime with 3:10 to play on a put-back by Burch-Manning as he was fouled, unfortunately he did not convert on the free-throw.  That basket turned out to be Beamer’s final points.  Central Valley finished the game on an 8-0 run, four points from Rehkow and three points from junior Beau Byus to close out the Titans in overtime, 61-55.

Top Performers:
Todd Beamer
Trey Burch-Manning (19 points, 7 rebounds)
Juwon Flowers (14 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds)

Central Valley
Austin Rehkow (21 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists)
Beau Byus (16 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks)

Girls- Glacier Peak Wins the Inside Battle, Advances to Tacoma
By Colin Caruso

In the 3A Regional Basketball tournament at Glacier Peak High School, the Glacier Peak Grizzlies were fortunate to host the Enumclaw Hornets with a trip to the Tacoma Dome on the line.  Glacier Peak’s band brought the energy throughout the contest and kept the atmosphere alive for this loser out game.

With a trip to Tacoma at stake, both teams started with a slow, meticulous offensive pace.  It was not until later in the first when the Grizzlies began exploiting gaps in the Enumclaw defense, leading to a 9-2 run to end the first quarter with the lead, 13-6.

Senior Julie Myers did her best to keep the Hornets in the ballgame in the first half, scoring 13 of her team’s 18 first half points.

Glacier Peak continued to attack down low in the second quarter, capitalizing on their size and interior presence to take a 25-18 lead into the half.

The second half began with a three-point barrage, two from the Hornets and one from the Grizzlies to cut the Grizzly lead to just four with 4:53 remaining in the third.  Glacier Peak responded with an 11-0 run, sparked by two three-pointers from Kianna Garner and one from Sophia Gaffney to extend the lead to 15.  Myers for the Hornets made two free-throws to close the quarter down 39-26.

Enumclaw, down 13 at the end of three, turned up their intensity in the beginning of the fourth quarter and scored six quick points to cut the Grizzly lead to seven with 6:11 to play.  Back to back baskets by Grizzly Nicole Fausey extended the lead back to double digits.  Enumclaw could not get any closer than seven points in the final quarter, as the Grizzlies advance to the Tacoma Dome.

Top Performers:
Glacier Peak
Nicole Fausey (10 points, 3 blocks)
Sophia Gaffney (9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals)

Enumclaw
Julia Myers (19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals)

VHL Catches up with TJ Coach Kyle Templeton- this is Jeffersons 1st Trip to State

2013 Varsity Hoops Live Interview
Thomas Jefferson – Boys Head Coach
Kyle Templeton

Brian Abker had a chance to talk with Thomas Jefferson’s Coach, Kyle Templeton, prior to their regional game match-up with high flying Curtis.  “I am a graduate of Thomas Jefferson in 1995,” said Templeton.  “This is the first year we have made the district tournament as a school since 1985 and the first time we have made the state tournament as a school ever.”

During the interview, Coach broke down his team and talked about this weekend’s game against Curtis, more importantly he talked about the Thomas Jefferson community and how well their fans travel.  “Our games are constantly filled, we’ve got the stands totally full.  Our band is just INSANE.  Our parent support and community support has just been awesome throughout the entire season.  When we travel somewhere you know where we are at.”

This is a big weekend for the Raiders.  Can they knock off the Vikings?  One thing is for sure after visiting with Coach Templeton, you’ll be hearing a lot more from the squad from TJ in the years to come.
